Break it down…
…and scaffold
So far, we have…1.Identified desired results
o Standards
o Objectives • Knowledge • Skills (21st Century Skills and others…)
2.Determined acceptable evidence of learning
o Formative assessmento Summative assessment

We will break down the residency into four small “teachable” parts, the LESSONS.
Each lesson ( ) should be about 45 minutes long.

What about standards?
o All lessons may cover the same standard.
o Each lesson may have different standards, but all of them must be in the residency outline.

Now we have to…plan learning experiences and instruction.
We need to decide…
How to introduce the residency (the content of the first lesson). The content of the other three lessons. How to sequence lessons.
To plan a sequence of lessons…
We scaffold the objectives to enable all students to build on their previous knowledge.
To build the “scaffold”…
We may arrange our objectives and assessments in a logical order
•from simple to complex
•from concrete to abstract
•from facts to concepts and ideas
•from easy to difficult
We may also follow the hierarchy of the art form, where the knowledge of one objective or a skill is the prerequisite to, or related to learning another.

We distribute the objectives throughout the four days in a sequence that takes in consideration the students’ prior knowledge, the lesson time, and what can be realistically accomplished.
The first lesson is the base of the scaffold.
…can be used to assess students’ prior knowledge.
…should introduce basic concepts and important background.
Lesson # 1…
From lesson one, we raise the scaffold…
To raise the scaffold, we select from the residency plan the objectives and assessments for each of the four lessons.

It is time to develop instructional activities to help students master the objectives.
Again, we consider the students’ prior knowledge and what can be realistically accomplished at the available time.
At this point, we may consider changing the distribution of objectives/assessment among lessons to make sure students have enough time to complete the activities.

About Assessment
• Each lesson must have formative assessments and may or not have a summative assessment.
• The first three lessons may have simple summative assessments, such as checklists or short constructed responses, or a small paragraph explaining the accomplished objective.
