ANIMALS IN DANGER!

Cruelty to Animals

• It probably began in the past when man began to understand the beauty of animals. Coupled with human’s power over them, it was probably decided that we wanted to have them with us. Through the centuries, man has domesticated quite a few animals to serve his needs, and sometimes to serve no need at all.

Animals and birds are carefree

• It is most definitely cruel to keep any animal or bird in captivity; worse still confined in cages. An animal or bird is so carefree in its own environment. It knows of no restrictions. Even domestic animals would like to walk about and act according to their instincts and desires. Caging them would deprive them of this. Since we would think it cruel if someone puts us in a cage, it stands to reason that we should not do it to animals and birds. The sense of justice we hold so clear when it comes to humans should be extended to all living creatures.

Page 6: Best ppt's by Akansoft - Save Animals

Left in the wild a bird does all sorts of things; when kept in the cage, it just sits there. Granted that birds are beautiful to look at, we cannot observe the bird at its best when it is caged. To watch the bird at its best we should go to its habitat. Caging domestic animals just serves the purpose of controlling them.

Wild animals should be left free in their habitats and domestic animals should be given as much freedom as possible. The only reason for caging birds and animals is when they are a danger to themselves or to others.

Caged creatures

Page 8: Best ppt's by Akansoft - Save Animals

We have no right to do this; we do it because the creatures are powerless to prevent us from confronting them. If we are robbed of such rights, we would rather die than yield. Only in the cruelest of regimes are men and women confined only because the government - good or otherwise - feels that they are threats to their power or to the country. By what right then do we imprison animals and birds?

CONSERVATION OF ANIMALS

• There are many international and continental organizations working for animals and birds. These organizations have a primary aim of saving animals and birds from getting killed by greedy humans. They also work for the freedom of animals. Animals being illegally caged are helped and stray animals are also helped. They also work for other environmental issues such as protecting animal habitats and forest, reduction of pollution etc.

WWF

• The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an international non-governmental organization working on issues regarding the conservation, research and restoration of the environment. It is the world's largest independent conservation organization with over 5 million supporters worldwide, working in more than 100 countries, supporting around 1,300 conservation and environmental projects. Currently, much of its work focuses on the conservation of three biomes that contain most of the world's biodiversity: forests, freshwater ecosystems, and oceans and coasts. Among other issues, it is also concerned with endangered species, pollution and climate change.

For 50 years, WWF has been protecting the future of nature. WWF's unique way of working combines global reach with a foundation in science, involves action at every level from local to global, and ensures the delivery of innovative solutions that meet

the needs of both people and nature. WWF’s mission is to conserve nature and reduce the most pressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth.

By 2020, WWF will conserve 15 of the world’s most ecologically important regions by working in partnership with others to:

• Protect and restore species and their habitats• Strengthen local communities' ability to conserve the natural resources they

depend upon• Transform markets and policies to reduce the impact of the production and

consumption of commodities• Ensure that the value of nature is reflected in decisions made by individuals,

communities, governments and businesses• Mobilize hundreds of millions of people to support conservation

THEIR AIM

PETA People for the Ethical

Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an American animal rights organization based in Norfolk, Virginia, and led by Ingrid Newkirk, its international president. A non-profit corporation with 300 employees and two million members and supporters. Its slogan is "animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment."

Page 14: Best ppt's by Akansoft - Save Animals

Aim

PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds, and other "pests" as well as cruelty to domesticated animals.

PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns.

Campaign The organization is known for its aggressive media campaigns,

combined with a solid base of celebrity support—Pamela Anderson, Drew Barrymore, Alec Baldwin, John Gielgud, Bill Maher, Stella McCartney, and Alicia Silverstone have all appeared in PETA ads.

Many of the campaigns have focused on large corporations. Fast food companies such as KFC, Wendy's, and Burger King have been targeted. In the animal-testing industry, PETA's consumer boycotts have focused on Avon, Benetton, Bristol-Myers-Squibb, Chesebrough-Pond's, Dow Chemical, General Motors, and others. Their modus operandi includes buying shares in target companies such as McDonald's and Kraft Foods in order to exert influence on animals. The campaigns have delivered results for PETA. McDonald's and Wendy's introduced vegetarian options after PETA targeted them; Petco stopped selling some exotic pets; and Polo Ralph Lauren said it would no longer use fur. Avon, Estee Lauder, Benetton, and Tonka Toy Co. all stopped testing products on animals, the Pentagon stopped shooting pigs and goats in wounds tests, and a slaughterhouse in Texas was closed down.

As part of its anti-fur action, PETA members have infiltrated hundreds of fashion shows in the U.S, Europe, and once in China, throwing red paint on the catwalks, and unfurling banners. Celebrities and supermodels have posed naked for the group's "I'd Rather Go Naked than Wear Fur" campaign—some men, but mostly women—triggering criticism from feminist animal rights advocates. The New Yorker writes that PETA activists have crawled through the streets of Paris wearing leg-hold traps and thrown around money soaked in fake blood at the International Fur Fair.

Criticism• The group has been the focus of criticism from inside and outside the

animal rights movement. Newkirk told Salon in 2001 that PETA works toward the ideal, but tries in the meantime to provide carrot-and-stick incentives. There has also been criticism from feminists within the movement about the use of scantily clad and nude women in PETA's anti-fur campaigns, and criticism in general that the group's media stunts trivialize animal rights.

• Outside the movement, the confrontational nature of PETA's campaigns has caused concern, as has the estimated 85% of animals it euthanizes. PETA was further criticized in 2005 by United States Senator Jim Inhofe for having given grants several years earlier to Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and Earth Liberation Front (ELF) activists, two groups that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has identified as agents of domestic terrorism. PETA responded that it has no involvement in ALF or ELF actions and does not support violence, though Newkirk has elsewhere made clear that she supports the removal of animals from laboratories and other facilities, including as a result of illegal direct action.

Blue Cross

The Blue Cross is a registered animal welfare charity in UK, Asian countries and more.

The charity provides support for pet owners who cannot afford private veterinary treatment, helps to find homes for unwanted animals, and educates the public in the responsibilities of animal ownership.

It works closely with a number of other organizations to promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

Page 19: Best ppt's by Akansoft - Save Animals

The Blue Cross is also heavily involved in animal adoption, arranging adoption for companion animals such as cats, dogs, rabbits and small rodents, as well as larger species such as horses. In 2010, the charity rehomed 6717 animals.

The organization also works to improve the lives of animals through promotion to pet owners and work in animal behavior therapy. They also offer a pet bereavement counseling service for owners traumatized by the loss of an animal.

1. Veterinary services:

Treating an unwell or injured pet can be very expensive. Their veterinary services help pets whose owners can't afford private fees. Their clients are on means-tested benefit and they also help people on a low income at their discretion.

Aim

2. Animal Adoption:

Their network of adoption centers and pet fosterers take in unwanted horses, cats, dogs and small pets (such as rabbits and guinea pigs). They care for the animals and rehabilitate them where needed, before finding them new, loving homes. Adopting an animal from the Blue Cross is a great way to find a companion matched to you and your lifestyle, while giving an animal another chance in life.

3. Promoting good Pet Care:

They aim to help as many animals as they can by promoting responsible pet ownership. They have got an extensive range of free pet care advice factsheets and videos dedicated to keeping a pet happy and healthy. Their education team also visits schools and youth groups to teach everyone about good animal care.

Page 23: Best ppt's by Akansoft - Save Animals

4. Animal Behavior:

Their experienced team of behaviorists give ongoing support to anyone who adopts an animal from them and they help address behavioral issues that some of the animals arrive with. They are a leading charity in the animal behavior field and the team regularly give training courses and lectures and work alongside other organizations to improve the welfare of animals.
