Murder in the Library
Thank you to TL’s at Gleeson College in SA for sharing this idea.
Aim was to improve students library skills while having fun.
The idea behind this activity is to encourage our students to use a variety of research, library use and ICT skills. In order to solve the 5 clues each week and the three parts of the mystery, the students need to use the Library Catalogue to search for texts, read QR Codes using their BYOD/smart phone, search the fiction and non-fiction shelving, find out where different collections are kept in the library and use their powers of observation.

Murder in the Library
It is an excellent way to introduce and encourage the use of the library catalogue.
It could tie in with a display of Mystery books. Ask teachers to nominate their favourite childhood / or adult mystery. Search for images to use – eg detectives, magnifying glass, crime scene tape etc
Structure: The Lego movie’s Emmet, has been found murdered in the Library. Who did it? Where is the suspect hiding? Why was Emmet murdered?

Murder in the Library
The mystery is run over 3 weeks, with one question per week. The five clues will take a student approximately 10-15 minutes to work through. They can work singly or in pairs/small groups. Each student who hands in an answer sheet gets a lucky dip prize. (multi packs of chocolates, lollies, stationery are ideal for this). Caution the ‘detectives’ to stay quiet and not spoil the mystery for others.
If you run your own mystery, please share on the local and national lists!
