Opening Sequence- Psycho

This shot of the credits (name of film) connotates to the audience that the film may be jumpy, as the writing is jagged and stands

(jumps) out on the screen, and also it appears on the screen in this way which is a

dysfunctional way . The colours also can connotate danger as the colour black is often

associated with danger.


This establishing shot is used to set the scene to the audience, that the characters live in a

big busy city. A grey colour (sky, city) can connotate a sense of danger to the audience. The non digetic sound in the background also links to the theme of danger linking well with

the colours.


This establishing shot also is used to set the scene to the audience however it sets it

further by adding a proper location, and also connotating to the audience about what type of life the characters have as they live in the city, or have something to do with the city.


This shot of the hotel (home) is used to give a further understanding of the type of place the characters live in as it is zooming in. The kind of

rough looking block connotates to the audience that the character may not be

wealthy and could maybe make the audience think about (stereotype) the characters to as what they will be like due the where they are, which could be rough and can connotate that

danger may be involved in the film.


This shot is used to build the characters up for the audience. This shot shows that the

characters are in a relationship presenting them as having normal lives. The colours in the room however are dull which you connotate to

the audience that the characters could be dangerous later on in the film. The soundtrack in the background also links with the idea of

danger.


This shot shows a cut (scar) on the mans shoulder which can show to the audience that

he may be in danger or is a dangerous man, which is character building to the audience.


This mid shot of the woman leaving the room is used to show the audience that she has a normal life as she is leaving to go to work in smart clothing connotating that she has a

normal life and builds a character profile for the audience.

Opening Sequence- Black Swan

This shot of the titles can connotate risk as black links the danger and risks, building

tension for the audience.


This long shot of the girl dancing is used to build the character for the audience, as it shows she likes to dance. The dark colours

connotate danger as black is associated with danger. The spotlight also connotates a a sense of danger as she is the only one in the shot and the spotlight meaning that she could be alone

and a lonely person in the rest of the film.


This shot of the girl dancing shows that she is skilled and further builds the character to

them. The colours again can connotate a sense of danger. The shadow of her feet is also

thrilling as shadows tend to be seen as scary.


This shot is used to further show the skills of the character, but also the colours connotate other things. For example the white dress can connotate purity as white links the purity and

can therefore show the audience that the character may be innocent and pure.


This shot shows the character fully, with colours fading from light to dark under the

spotlight again. The shot is used to show the audience the character to further build.


Again the main character is focuses under the spotlight, however in this shot another

character is introduced to the audience. This shot can connotate that she is in danger as she is put under a spotlight with her back turned to

him and he is walking towards her. He is also out of focus blending into the dark background

which can again connotate danger to the audience.


This mid shot of the character shows the feathers falling off of her costume. This could connotate to the audience that her purity is leaving her (loosing it) as they are falling off. This therefore builds the characters profile

even more.

Opening Sequence- Shutter Island

This first shot tells the audience where the scene is set so they have a better

understanding of how the film could go. Again black suggests danger.


The colours in this shot can tell the audience that something dangerous may be happening,

as the grey colours connotate this. Also it shows that the weather is foggy which

sometimes also links to a sense of danger.


The mid shot of the first character shown is used to show his facial expressions and what

he has on him. His facial expressions show that he feels uncomfortable on the boat, and the

gun that is in his trousers immediately tells the audience that there are risks and that danger

may occur.


This long shot of the character shows the handcuffs on the boat. This can connotate to the audience that the boat contains danger, and the character may be involved in it as he carries a gun and is shown in the room. The

builds character profile and also sets the scene for the audience.


This shot of the first character shown and new one, suggests to the audience that they may be

detectives (because of the outfits they are wearing). This therefore tells the audience that something dangerous has happened and builds tension for them, as the detectives are clearly

on there way or investigating something.


The close up of the woman and the detective shows that he had a happy life as it is a

flashback. This shows that he is a normal person with a similar life to everyone else. This

builds the character to the audience and suggest that he is going to be the protagonist

as he has had a happy life.


This shot shows the audience that the characters are in the middle of nowhere which

can connotate that the characters may be in danger, as no one is there and nothing is there.

The shot is used to show how the small the characters are to the surroundings.

Opening Sequence- Sixth Sense

The words on these credits are spread out which could suggest to the audience that film may be not precise or off target as the words

aren’t all together. The dark colours connotate danger to the audience, and build tension.


The dark background in opening shot after the credits can connotate danger to audience. The

very dim light can suggest


The shot builds tension for the audience as it is a pov shot which suggests that someone is

watching the girl. The dark colours in the shot link well to show a sense of danger to the

character.

build tension for the audience. Again the colours are dark which again suggests danger.
