Phase/Time Content/Concepts Teaching and Learning Activities
Remarks Teacher Students
Orientation
(5 minutes)
Example of food chain:
Leaves eaten by Deer, while Deer
eaten by Tiger
Teacher shows picture of plants and animals that connect together in food chain. Ask pupils to guess what are the animals in each picture base on the description given. Teacher introduce for today’s topic.
Pupils concentrate on the picture. Pupils try to guess the animals.
SPS: Predicting TS: Making Conclusions
Elicitation of
ideas
(15 minutes)
Herbivore – deer
Carnivore – tiger
Omnivore – chicken
Teacher shows few pictures of animals and asks pupils to identify its’ foods and classify it into herbivore, carnivore or omnivore. Questions:
Can you identify the animals in this picture?
What does the animal eats?
This animal is herbivore, carnivore or omnivore?
Pupils identify the animals in the picture, identify its’ foods and classify it in it’s’ group. Expected answer:
Deer, tiger, chicken
Grass, deer, worms
Herbivore, carnivore, omnivore.
SPS: Communicating, predicting. Teaching aids: ICT (slide show presentation).
Restructuring
of ideas (15 minutes)
Herbivore – animals that eat plants only.
Carnivore – animals that eat only other animals.
Omnivore – animals that eat both plants and other animals.
Producer – plant called producer because it can produces its own food.
Consumer – animal is called consumer because they cannot make their own food.
1) Teacher explains about herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. 2) Teacher asks pupils to give example of animals in each category. 3) Teacher shows example how to construct food chain. 4) Teacher explains about producer and consumer. 5) Teacher asks pupils to identify consumer and producer in food chains given.
Pupils concentrate to the teacher explanation. Pupils concentrate to the teacher explanation by using slide show presentation.
SPS: Communicating TS: Relating, analysing Value: Being Cooperative, honest Teaching aids: ICT (slide show presentation)
Application of
ideas
(20 minutes)
Grass grasshopper frog bird
Plants mouse deer fox
Paddy plant rat snake eagle
Algae tadpole small fish big
fish predatory birds
1) Teacher asks pupils to remain in their group. 2) Teacher gives each group with cards that contain name of plant and animals. By using the cards, each group will form a food chain. They also identify the producer and consumer. 3) Teacher asks pupils to present their group work.
Pupils remain at their seat. Pupils remain in their groups and discuss to construct their own food chain and identify the producer and consumer. Pupils present their works with the guidance of teacher.
Value: Cooperative. Teaching aids: Cards, paper
Reflection
(5 minutes)
Teacher asks chosen pupils to draw mind map of animals and food they eat at the whiteboard. Teacher gives food chains and asks pupils to identify producer and consumer.
Pupils write animals and food they eat in the mind maps at the whiteboard. Pupils identify producer and consumer from food chains given.
