History of Digital Portfolio in

New HampshireJuly 1, 2005 – New State Standards Take Effect.

•Based on national standards -including the ISTE NETS-S

•Standards included digital portfolio requirement

•New Hampshire Educators Online resources developed


New Hampshire I.C.T. Standards

• Local school boards require an integrated approach to the use of 21st century tools.– Develop ethical and responsible use of

technology tools– Use with core subject areas– Develop cognitive proficiency– Develop technological proficiency with hardware, software and network– Create and maintain a digital portfolios


Local school board provide opportunities for students to

demonstrate I.C.T. Competencies

•Instruction (optional assessment if used to satisfy ½ credit proficiency for HS graduation)

What is Sakai?• A Collaborative Learning

Environment (C.L.E.) – Course management system comprised

of multiple Web 2.0 tools

• An Open Source Portfolio (O.S.P.) system


Who else is Using it?

• Rhode Island Project (RINET)– A statewide voluntary initiative for

tracking graduation competencies.• Ohio Learning Network

– A statewide collaborative learning environment in junior colleges, plans to expand K – 12 in the future.

• New York and Arizona• A few districts K – 12.

(Where We Were)

• Each district created their own protocols for digital portfolio submission and storage that met their own needs.

• Five school districts feed into Pembroke Academy, a common shared system needed to be put into place.

•A safe environment for students to work - a walled garden.

•Post class announcements, design and administer assessments as well as enhance communication and collaboration between students and staff.

What S.A.U. 53 has done in the past year!

• Implemented 6th – 8th grade pilot of the O.S.P.• Integrated Sakai with existing network log

on.• Encouraging exploration of Sakai C.L.E. in all

grade levels throughout the S.A.U. (Over 200 project groups have been established.

• Extend portfolio project to high school and other grades.

• Add state NETS rubric• Budget - we have expended approximately

$5,000 - $7,000 for a consultant service for Sakai


Beyond S.A.U. 53 K-12 NH Sakai Collaborative

• Comprised of 16 New Hampshire School Districts.

• A collaborative initiative to pool resources to support each district’s needs

• Established a hosted solution for each district through Mainstream (www.mainstream.net)

• Established preliminary collaboration with Vermont.
