InstructorInformation:Dr.AngelaSubulwa Office:Sage4459;424.7110 Skype:subulwa.geographyEmail:[email protected]:subulwa.youcanbook.meCourseDescriptionGeography102emphasizesthedevelopmentofglobalawarenessasitappliestothecurrenteventsoftheday.Inthiscourse,wewilltakeapenetratinglookintothegeographicalrelationshipsbetweenhumansocietiesandcultures,thenaturalenvironment,andhistorical/politicalchangesthathaveshapedthecontemporaryworld.Thiscoursegoesbeyondsimplyasking“whatiswhere?”andseekstohelpusunderstandwhycertaingeographicpatternsoccurinparticularplacesandwhythatisimportantinpositioningourselvesintheworld.Wewillapproachourinvestigationsbydividingtheworldintodistinctregions.Throughoutthecourse,wewillexaminethevariousregionsoftheglobe,withafocusonareasoutsidetheUnitedStates&Canada.Wewillexaminegeographiesofculture,politics,andhistory,shiftingregionalandglobaleconomicpatterns,interconnectionsbetweenlocalandglobalwaysoflife,diffusionofpeopleandculturesthroughouttheworld,andwaysthatpeopleinteractwiththenaturalenvironmentincommunitiesacrosstheglobe.Allofthesediscussionsdeepenourunderstandingoftheformsofandsourcesofinteraction,interdependence,andinequityatthelocalandglobalscales.LiberalEducation,UniversityStudiesProgram,&YouLiberalEducationisanapproachtolearningandthinkingthatpreparesyoutonavigateanincreasinglycomplex,diverse,andchangingworldbyteachingyouhowtolearn,think,andengageinmeaningfulways.Aliberaleducationincludesageneraleducationcurriculum(ofwhichthiscourseisapart)thatexposesyoutomultipledisciplinesandwaysoflearning/knowing/engaging,alongwithmorein-depthinquiryintoyourspecificareaofinterest.Thisapproachtoeducationempowersyouwithbroadknowledgeandasenseofsocialresponsibility,aswellasstrongandtransferableintellectualandpracticalskills. WorldRegionalGeographyisuniquelysituatedtoaddresseachoftheseSignatureQuestionsandtodrawconnectionsbetweenthem.Aswemovethroughthesemester,youwillgainanunderstandingofhowageographicperspectiveenablesyoutoconnectthesequestionsinmeaningfulways.Forfurtherinformationabouttheunique(andbetter!)generaleducationatUWOshkosh,visittheUniversityStudiesProgramwebsite.GlobalCitizenshipWorldRegionalGeographyfulfillstheUSPGlobalCitizenshiprequirement.GlobalCitizenshipistheknowledgeofnations,cultures,orsocietiesbeyondtheU.S.;therecognitionofhowinteraction,interdependence,andinequityamongdiversegeographical,social,political,oreconomicsystemshaveshapedhistoricalandcontemporaryglobalchallengesandopportunities;andtheskillstoengagewiththeresponsibilitiesofinformedcitizenshipinacomplex,interdependent,andchangingworld.LearningOutcomesCourseLearningOutcomesGeography102isanintroductory-levelundergraduatecoursethatprovidesbasicskills,generalunderstanding,globalliteracy,andafundamentalfoundationforadvancedcoursesingeography.Aftersuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,youwillbeableto:

• Explainhowgeographersapproachandunderstandcomplexglobalissues• Recognizethephysicalandculturalregionsoftheworld• Identifykeyfeatures/problemsinthecontemporaryworld• Understandhowglobalsystems,markets,institutionsandagreementsshapetheeconomic

opportunities(andlimitations)ofcoffeecommodityexchange,creatingstructuresofpowerandinequity

• Explainthegeographicconflictsthatunderliemanyoftheimportantcurrenteventsoftheday• Understandthecriticalrolethatfeaturesofpersonalandgroupidentity(likegender,race,

• RecognizetheinterconnectednessofgeographicphenomenonatworkintheworldGeographyProgramLearningOutcomesGeography102isalsoarequired,corecourseforallgeographymajors.TheGeographyprogramprovidesmajorswiththeknowledgeandskillstomeeteight,broadStudentLearningOutcomes(SLOs).AsamajormovesthroughtheGeographyprogram,coursesaredesignedtoachieveandreinforceatleastoneoftheeightSLOsataparticularlevel(introductory,intermediate,advanced).Aftersuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,youwillbeableto:

• Identify,understand,andsynthesizethebasicthemesandpatternsofhumanactivitiesthatcreatethecultural,economic,andpoliticallandscapesfoundontheearth(GeographyprogramSLO#2–introductorylevel)
