DRINGENDE MOSIE: FOUTIEWE EN GESKATTE LESINGS MOET HERSIEN WORD
Woede oor water
DESIRE RORKE
@dezzierorke
S
legte skuld as gevolg van foutiewe wa-
termeterlesings en waterskattings
moet so gou moontlik hersien en afge-
treffende n foutiewe waterrekening.
Die mosie is verlede week by die Bergdal-
subraad ingedien.
sen.
VolgensWitbooi is sy gemiddeldewaterre-
kening sowat R300 per maand. Toe kry ek
skielik in 2013 n rekeningvanR2 000, shy.
volgens bereken. Maar tog verwag hulle ek
moet die uitspattige rekening betaal en het
skoon gedreig om my water af te sny as ek
probleemsukkel.Die subraad sluitBracken-
fell enKraaifontein in. Baie vanonsklagtes
met betrekking tot foutiewewaterrekeninge
is as gevolg vanwaterskattings, s Hansen.
skattings gegrond is. Elke vyfde huis sewa-
Geskatte waterlesings veroorsaak baie
Stad en subraad by plaaslike inwoners, s
Hansen.
stel. Die praktykmoet gestaakword, omdat
dit nie die ware watergebruik reflekteer nie
en lei tot ondoeltreffende dienslewering.

L
ocal residents are fretting over the im-
pending excavation of the old asbestos
dump in Brackenfell.
Seven years after the asbestos ban in
South Africa, developers are now consider-
ing constructing a new industrial park on
the old Everite dumpsite to the utter shock
and horror of the local business community,
who have now drawn up a petition to halt
the development.
The Everite factory in Brackenfell pro-
duced asbestos products since the early
1940s and only stopped using asbestos in
their products in the early 2000s thanks to
stringent new legislation.
The factory then closed down and moved
to Johannesburg where it now forms part of
Group Five.
A killer
Internationally, asbestos is seen as a kill-
er andno investor, developer ormining enti-
ty has ever taken responsibility for health
issues or death due to asbestos related infec-
tions. When the land in question was reha-
bilitated, it was intended and agreed upon
by the then municipality and land owner
Group Five, that this landwill be untouched
for a minimum of 30 years. Land buyers
were also promised that this land will be do-
nated to the City of Cape Town as a green
area after it was sealed off with clay and
soil, says Neil Williams, a land owner adja-
cent to the planned new development in
Brackenfell Industria.
Williams is one of almost 100 property
owners and tenants who signed this petition
last week.
They all currently operate their business-
es in Brackenfell Industria, where Duro
Brick is planning to develop some 50 addi-
tional units consisting of warehouses and
workshops.
Today the Asbestos Regulation 2001, pub-
lished by the department of labour, still con-
trols the exposure to asbestos in the work-
place and requires employers to protect em-
ployees from exposure to asbestos and to
conduct regular health and dust surveil-
lance.
Herein lies the problem.
How can the city of Cape Town or any de-
veloper guarantee that our health or that of
our workers or residents in the nearby sub-
urbs of Brackenfell or Kraaifontein will not
be affected? When excavation starts, what
guarantees dowe have that the asbestos will
not be airborne? asks Gerrit Van Wyk, an-
other local business man in the area.
Theabove regulations, amongothers, stip-
ulate that any employer must ensure the re-
lease of asbestos dust into any environment
or water system complies with the provi-
sions of the Atmospheric Pollutions Preven-
tion Act, the Environment Conservations
Act and the National Water Act.
According to bothWilliams and VanWyk,
the implications of the planned excavations
nor adherence to the applicable legislation,
were explained to the business community
in detail.
Howcanwepro-
tect ourselves and
our employees
against asbestos in-
fection when exca-
vation starts?
they ask.
The environ-
mental impact as-
sessment was left
at the library to pe-
ruse a thousand
page booklet com-
pletely non-com-
prehendible to the
man in the street,
he says.
Sceptical
What is more, ac-
cording to Wil-
liams, only busi-
ness owners direct-
ly neighbouring
the new develop-
ment were notified
by the city of the impending development.
Not even land owners and tenants across
the street from us received letters, not to
mention the thousands of residents who live
a stones throw away. They could all possi-
bly be affected, why were they not in-
formed?
Peter Sutter, a member of the Brackenfell
Ratepayers Association, says he is very
sceptical about the safe excavation of the
land.
The asbestos is found between one and
three meters deep on average, but in some
places was found to be as shallow as 30cm.
It will definitely be exposed when holes are
dug for water and other service pipes.
The danger lies inwhatwill happen if the
asbestos is exposed and then lifted by the
strong winds in Cape Town. That old dump-
site is one of themost dangerous areas in the
city, he says.
Although Sutter was assured by Group
Five that the land can be developed safely
bymeans of very careful safetymeasures, he
doubts it.
We will only feel safe if the company al-
lows amember of the community tomonitor
the process. We cannot rely on their word
only, he stresses.
Kushil Maharaj, managing director of
Group Five properties said that the site in
question, was used to legally consolidate
some asbestos materials when the old facto-
ry closed down in 2000.
All old materials, which mainly consists
of old pipes and sheets, were buried and
properly covered with imported top-soil to
avoid any exposure to the elements, sur-
rounding businesses and people, he said.
Currently the land is secured and activi-
ty on the site is limited to the control and
management of above ground vegetation.
He saysGroupFive submittedanEnviron-
mental Assessment Report to the city in
April this year, notifying them of intent to
develop the site.
There are currently ongoing discussions
within the City of Cape Towns planning de-
partments and with Group Five and our en-
vironmental consultants on responsible and
environmentally acceptable development
options for possible future development of
the site, he says.
At this stage Group Five is still at an ear-
ly pre-feasibility stage of a potential develop-
ment on this site and cannot confirmwheth-
er such development will in fact be viable to
pursue or not. Should this be pursued,
Group Five will interact directly with all in-
terested and affected parties through the
public participation platforms.
A spokesperson at the City of Cape Town,
said they are looking into the matter.
Anger over asbestos site
Thehealth implications of exposure to
airborne asbestos fibres were
highlighted in the 1930s and specific
links to certain cancers were first ma-
de in South Africa in the early 1960s,
which led to the national asbestos
summit in 1998 and the ultimate ban
of the use of Asbestos in 2008. In 2002,
Everite company statistics showed 15
people had died of asbestosis, 39 of me-
sothelioma and 14 of lung cancer. A
former spokesperson at Everite stated
that it was common knowledge that
Everite employees have contracted as-
bestos related diseases over the past 50
years. The last mentioned illness is a
rare form of cancer that develops in
cells of the protective lining that co-
versmany of the internal organs of the
body.
Mesothelioma is most commonly
caused by exposure to asbestos.

T
here seems to be no quick fix for resi-
dents of Normandie Estate, who have
been left without means of communi-
cation following extensive copper cable
theft.
Nine large copper cables were stolen in
the vicinity of Protea Village, leaving nu-
merous residents disconnected, Telkom
spokesperson Pynee Chetty confirmed last
week.
Chetty said one 50 pair cable, five 20 pair
cables and three 10 pair cables were stolen
in the area over the last few weeks.
A 50 pair cable refers to one big cablewith
50 smaller pairs of cables inside. One such
50 pair cable services 50 clients.
The matter is still under investigation
and although Telkom is considering replac-
ing the cables, this might be a lengthy proc-
ess, he says, adding that an assessment is
being done to investigate all viable options.
He said all incidents of cable theft arehan-
dled uniquely. In some cases the cable could
be replaced whereas in others, wireless al-
ternatives can be suggested.
The increase in copper cable theft is cre-
ating an environment of a rapidly deterio-
rating service quality and is severely affect-
ing the delivery of sustainable information
and communications technology (ICT) serv-
ices to customers.
Inmanyhigh-theft areas, cable is repeat-
edly stolen, sometimes within days after re-
placements or repairs.
The direct impact of cable theft includes
the disruption of essential services and
costs of replacements or repairs of the af-
fected infrastructure, he says.
When deciding on what action to follow
in Normandie Estate, many variables are
considered.
Some cases allow for the replacement of
the stolen copper cable, while others need
alternative access technology.
Importantly, both cases entail a process
of assessment, funding, planning and de-
ployment. Some delays can also be attribut-
ed to the recurrence of theft and procedural
time lapses associated with the process for
acquiring approval fromrelevantmetropol-
itan and town councils, as well as environ-
mental impact assessment studies that are
essential, especially in the case of convert-
ing to a wireless intervention, he says.
Chetty says Telkom has observed a trend
in the deliberately determined cycle of
theft. Not only is this damaging to busi-
nesses, depriving our customers of a basic
service and in some cases, adversely affect-
ing their security, but it is also affecting our
capacity to deliver services within accepta-
ble time intervals.
Efforts to counter the scourge of copper
cable theft include the deployment of wire-
less technologies, that are alternatives to
copper, to bury vulnerable aerial cable
routes underground, and even hiring secu-
rity firms to guard sensitive cable routes.
Chetty could not indicate exactly how
many residents were affected by this latest
theft or how long it will take to assess the
situation and deal with it.

hakiesdraad gesleep is.
FOTO: WAYNE WOLMARANS

N
og n fietsryer is ernstig beseer en sy
fiets, asook di van sy rymaat, ver-
woes toe n voertuig hom verlede Vry-
dagoggend vroeg op die Spes Bona-pad buite
Durbanville getref het.
Ooggetuies het dit as n wonderwerk be-
riste, asook swaar vragmotors, misbruik as
beur.Wolmarans is nie beseer nie, maar bei-
de fietse van onderskeidelik R35 000 en
R40 000 is verwoes.
Di voorval kom nadat n ander fietsryer
van Durbanville, Johan Schoeman (46), op
13Oktoberdoodgery is toehyopdieKlipheu-
welpad gery het. Verskeie ander insidente
waarin fietsryers deur voertuie raakgery is,
het die afgelope ruk plaasgevind.
Di jongste voorval is op Facebook veroor-
deel.
Hy wasMaandag in n stabiele toestand in
die hosorgeenheid van die Mediclinic Dur-
banville. Hy was by sy bewussyn, maar kon
n groot verskil gemaak dat n dokter so gou
plaaswasookopdie toneel enhet nkombers

prof. Piet Naud, nuwe direkteur van die
Universiteit Stellenbosch se Bestuurskool
(USB), tydens n aanbieding verlede Vry-
dagoggend oor sy jongste boek.
Diboek,Readingbetween the (head)lines,
is n versameling daaglikse koerantrubrie-
s.
Dit wil die dubbelsinnigheid van die le-
we uitlig.
sport, verbruikerbewustheid, politiek, kor-
rupsie en geloof.
Sy samevattings hieroor het met uittrek-
sels uit die boek gepaardgegaan.
Oor politiek en die land as n renboogna-
sie, het hy ges: Onskomalmalmet nCast-
le-bier indiehandbymekaar.
Afrikaanse woorde. Rassisme, seksisme en
klasbewustheid is steeds diep in ons wese
ingewortel, en dis moeilik om daaraan te
ontsnap. Ek dink nie ons het veel gevorder
nie.
VolgensNaud veralgemeen Suid-Afrika-
ners graag.
Ons soek gedurig bevestiging dat ons
veralgemening reg is. Indien nie, soek jy
teenbewyse en beskou di as uitsonde-
rings.
word weer wie jy is.
Wat korrupsie betref, het Naud ges
mense beskou dit grotendeels as n rege-
ringsprobleem, maar bygevoeg die private
sektor hoort ook onder die mikroskoop
hieroor.
Hy meen sport, wat as n samesnoerende
faktor in n verdeelde samelewing beskou
word, loop slegs op korttermyn-samehorig-
heid uit.
n Mens bou maatskaplike samehorig-
heid deur waardes wat almal gemeen het
nie (deur) sport nie, is sy gevolgtrekking.
Oorwinkelsentrums het hy ges: Oormati-
ge verbruikersbewustheid vernietig ons ge-
meenskappe. Baie mense het n winkelsen-
trumnodig om te voel hullewordmaatskap-
lik aanvaar.
Die boek is onmiddellikndie aanbieding
by die USB bekend gestel.
Die rubrieke daarin behandel maatskap-
like kodes soos politiek, sake, verbruikers-
bewustheid, korrupsie, opvoeding, sport,
atherRobertson, redakteur vanTheHerald,
ges Naud se aanstelling by die USB is di
groot verlies.
USBhoof praat oor die land
se psige en sy realiteite
Prof. Piet Naude, hoof van die USB in Bellville,
praat tydens n lesing oor sy jongste boek. Hy
Suid-Afrika .

Requests for medical assistance continue to
dominate calls to theCity of CapeTowns 107
Public Emergency Communication Centre
(PECC).
Statistics from the previous festive season
show the highest number of calls to the
PECC came from Dunoon in Milnerton.
The call centre was established over 10 ye-
ars ago to provide a single point of contact
formembers of the publicwhoneed to report
an emergency.
Between July 2013 and September 2014,
call centre staff created 401 140 incident re-
cords from the more than 780 000 calls recei-
ved.
Of these, 54%were formedical assistance,
ranging from assaults to maternity cases
and abdominal pain. Callers requesting as-
sistance for crimeand lawenforcement issu-
es accounted for the second highest category
of calls.
Onaverage, 90%of all callswere answered
within 10 seconds.
The City doesnt necessarily provide all
the services that callers require, specifically
medical responses. For example, we are not
in charge of the ambulance service, but we
have a formal system that allows the agent
to patch the caller through to Metro EMS
who is then responsible for ensuring the res-
ponse. The same would apply where a South
African Police Service response is required.
From a consumer perspective, its a single
number to remember or save in their con-
tacts, instead of the number for each indivi-
dual service provider, says the Citys may-
comember for safety and security, JPSmith.
The PECC expects an increase in the num-
ber of calls from the beginning of December
until the end of the festive season.
Unfortunately, there also tends to be an in-
crease in prank calls during this time of ye-
ar,whenchildrenare on school holidays and
have unsupervised access to telephones at
home and even public telephones, knowing
that it is a free call.
It might seem harmless, but those preci-
ous seconds spent on a prank call could me-
an life or death for someone else who has to
wait in the queue to speak to an agent. So
parents, please discourage your children
from engaging in this behaviour although,
experience has shown that children are not
the only culprits and that some grown-ups
apparently need to be reminded about this
sort of thing too, adds Smith.
Prank calls could be
fatal for the injured

Most children thinkof their school shoes
as a burden that completes a dreary uni-
form. It represents 12 years of slog and
for many the first sign of freedom is to
relegate them to a pile of discarded
clothes immediately after writing that
last matric exam.
But imagine if you didnt have those
shoes to carry you through all the sea-
sons especially during our coldwinters
when you have to negotiate puddles?
In some families children have to
share the same pair of shoes, with sib-
lings taking turns to wear them.
This is the reality for many children
from less fortunate backgrounds. Their
parents simply dont have the means to
scrape together enough money for
school shoes. So many of them go to
school barefoot.
You can be a hero by simply leaving
your school shoes at your desk after
writing your last exam for the year.
Please ensure you ask your parents per-
mission to do so. The shoes need to be
in usable condition. Tie the shoes togeth-
er so the pairs are not lost when they are
boxed up. TygerBurgers sister publica-
tionPeoples Post requests that the shoes
are boxed and ready for collection in the
new year.

Hundreds of people searched for their
names on the more than 11 000 iikomityi
(drinking vessels) in an installation on the
lawn of the Castle in Cape Town on Sunday.
It was the culmination of Ukusela eKapa,
an official World Design Capital 2014
project inwhich peoplewho took part in the
project, collected an ikomityi their own,
if theywere lucky enough to find it, or some-
one elses. The ideawas that the project will
connect people by shaking hands with a
stranger when they hold someone elses
ikomityi.
Ukusela eKapa, which means Drink
Cape Town in, is a joint venture between
ceramic artist Hennie Meyer from Durban-
ville and architect, Janine de Waal.
The project raised design awareness dur-
ing Cape Town World Design Capital 2014,
connecting 10 000 people through design.
Each participant created a unique drink-
ing vessel by imprinting their hand on soft
clay and writing their first name and age
on the base of the vessel.
The mobility of the project enabled Uku-
sela eKapa to squeeze in eachof the 24 city
subcouncils. Visitors to Cape Town from
elsewhere in South Africa and from over 50
countries also took part in the project.
The installation was built by renowned
land artist Strijdom van derMerwe. He told
TygerBurger at the official opening on Sat-
urday evening that the symbolic meaning
of this specific designwas that the lines rep-
resent the connection of communities by
roads and streets.
The islands, connected with lines, rep-
resent towns and cities with the names
of the people living in them represented by
the names at the bottom of the iikomityi.
The pentagonal design of the installation
is also based on the structure of the Castle,
consisting of five corners, he said.
He also made an installation last week on
Robben Island, prior to the oneat theCastle.

Gang fight breaks out at primary school
ESM ERASMUS
@erasmusesme
Worried parents collected their children
from the Trevor Manuel Primary School in
Fisantekraal last Wednesday when a fight
between gangsters broke out at the school.
Four boys, all learners at the school, re-
portedly stormed into the Grade 6 class with
pangas at about 10:00, according to Jessica
Shelver, spokesperson for Western Cape
minister of education, Debbie Schfer.
Theywere allegedly looking for a specific
learner. This disrupted the classes at the
back section of the school where the Grade
6 and 7 learners are based.
All the Grade 6 and 7 learners were then
assembled in the hall, where they were de-
briefed and counselling was made availa-
ble, she said.
The police arrived at the school immedi-
ately and assisted the principal.
This is a small community so word about
the incident spread quickly. Parents then
came to collect their children.
The primary school children are soon to
start their exams.
According to a teacher, who wants to stay
anonymous, the problems with gangs start-
ed last year, but was nipped in the bud. He
said theproblem iswith school childrenwho
dropped out of school.
Shelver said a parent meeting was called
for the same day. However, it was not well
attended and another meeting was sched-
uled for Friday at 18:00.
About ten learners were given letters to
come to school this Monday at 07:30 with
their parents to appear before the day com-
mittee of the schools governing body.
Shelver said the four panga-wielding boys
managed to enter the school building as part
of the fence at the back of the school is down.
Although it was repaired by the depart-
ment this year, the school is constantly faced
with vandalism. We find it very disturbing
that people are prepared to damage a school
classroom or steal resources meant to teach
and protect young learners, often from the
same community, said Shelver.
She said the education district and the
school is working with Fisantekraals Won
Life Early Learning Centre, a non-govern-
mental organisation, to help with the erec-
tion of a stronger fence around the school.
An amount of R400 000 has been raised so
far.
The circuits school social worker is at
the school every Wednesday to work with
some of the parents to address social chal-
lenges they face.
The circuit also started a project called
Education Partnership Outreach (EPO) in
the community tomake parents aware of the
importance of education and what challeng-
es the schools are facing, Shelver said.
The first meeting was held on 8 November
this year in Fisantekraal with different
stakeholders, including non-governmental
organisations, churches, the police, parent
representatives, Circuit Team Managers
(CTM) and the district director.

When one walks into any store
or shopping centre, it is clear
the festive season is here.
Everywhere you look, you see
Christmas trimmings and
decorations and stores adver-
tising special offers.
The final touches are being
put on end-of-year work
functions.
People are preparing for the
holidays; whether they are
going away or staying at home,
it is obvious that they are
looking forward to a much-
needed break from work.
But with the festive season
usually comes a spike in
crime, debt and accidents. And
we often forget about the real
meaning of Christmas, as it
has been over-commercialised
over the years.
So try to do things a little
differently this year. If you are
going away, ensure that your
home is burglar-proof, hire a
house sitter or ask your
neighbours to keep an eye on
your property.
When you sit down for
Christmas lunch or dinner
with your family, remember
the value and story behind the
day appreciate the opportuni-
ty you have with your loved
ones and enjoy every minute of
the festive break.
And if you are travelling be
sure to triple check whether
your car is in working order,
do not drive if you are too
tired and always pray for
travelling mercies.
Happy festive season!

Die strooi van rommel in
Scottsdene, Northpine en
Bernadino Heights het n euwel
geword tot s n mate dat dit
eintlik n skande is.
Om te dink dat mense, wat
Strooi van rommel
het euwel geword
as opgevoed en beskaaf beskou
word, tot so n lae vlak kan
daal waar hulle totale respek
vir hulself, die gemeenskap en
die omgewing verloor het.
Ry gerus deur Scottsdene en
sien hoe elke oop ruimte in n
vullishoop verander het.
Ek sidder om te dink hoe
sulke mense se huise van binne
en hul erwe lyk heelwaar-
skynlik soos die spreekwoordeli-
ke varkhok self. Die omgewing
word ontsier met ou flenterkle-
re, vrot sitkamerbanke, kom-
buisvullis, tuinvullis en omtrent
alles wat hulle nie in hul huise,
erwe of motorhuise wil h nie.
Terselfdertyd skitter die
wetstoepassingsafdeling van die
Stad Kaapstad in sy afwesigheid
in hierdie stortinggeteisterde
gebied. Ons moet aanvaar dat
as n volwasse person nou nog
nie opgevoed is om te weet dat
dit onvanpas, morsig, minag-
tend en onwettig is om so te
stort nie, sal opvoeding nie
meer help nie. Streng wetstoe-
passing is die enigste oplossing.
Hoe langer die munisipaliteit
neem om die onwettige stor-
tingsterreine skoon te maak,
hoe meer begin mense dink dit
is in orde om daar te stort.
Werknemers van die Stad ry
daagliks by die vullishope verby
en niemand dink dis nodig om
dit op te ruim nie.
Is dit wat ons vir ons kinders
wil nalaat? n Vullishoop-omge-
wing?

I wholeheartedly agree with
Lionel Latigan (Stats show
guns deter criminals, Tyger-
Burger, 5 November).
More than 150 years of global
empirical evidence has shown
that gun control is a miserable
failure to control crime.
The worst genocides of the
previous century all followed
gun control and the concomi-
tant disarmament of civilians.
The saying if guns are out-
lawed only outlaws will own
guns is as true as ever.
Based on the fact that more
firearms in civilian hands leads
to a decrease in violent crime
and the governments proven
inability to rid our society of
crime, civilian firearm owner-
ship should be encouraged and
promoted.
A grandmother and her
grandchild were robbed at
knifepoint in Parow, a woman
on her way to Avondale Station
was robbed at knifepoint and in
two incidents women were
robbed at knifepoint by cow-
ards waiting in cars.
In one case, two attackers
turned and fled when the
victim merely produced a
firearm. Now some stupid fools
want us to believe that by
banning the law-abiding from
owning firearms these type of
crimes would have been
prevented?
Until government gets its act
together to permanently and
effectively rid us of crime, the
law-abiding will increasingly
have to arm themselves to
protect that which is near and
dear to them.

SLICE OF LIFE
Seisoen van
blydskap het
ook hartseer
Die feestyd is om die draai. Gewoonlik is
gepaard gaan waar mense n welver-
diende blaaskans n n dolle jaar kry.
Maar ongelukkig hou die feestyd ook
sekere negatiewe vooruitsigte in.
paaie vervierdubbel. Mense se haas om
by hul vakansiebestemmings uit te kom,
knip baie keer hul lewens kort.
Jaarliks kom bykans 2 000 sterftes,
geduld in swaar verkeer.
wiger as ooit vantevore is. Hoeveel

To receive your ordered take-away pizza
with an alcoholic beverage in Durbanville at
your front door, could become reality.
An application for extension of liquor tra-
ding hours for off-consumption for ColCac-
chio Durbanville at Spiros Corner was re-
commended for approval at the cubcouncil 7
(Koeberg) meeting last Monday 17 Novem-
ber.
ColCacchio motivated its application for
extension from Monday to Saturday from
18:00 to 20:00 now that themajority of its busi-
ness is either take-away collections or home
deliveries.
The pizzeria has an existing off-consumpti-
on licence which enables customers to buy
a bottle of wine or beer to take away with
their meals.
According to the conditions of the existing
off-consumption licence, the identity num-
ber of a client must be recorded when liquor
is ordered, and must be verified on delivery.
Furthermore, the current licence stipula-
tes that liquor may only be delivered with a
food order.
Gerhard Fourie, chairperson of sub-coun-
cil 7 (Koeberg), said the same conditions im-
posed on the existing licencemust also be ap-
plicable on the extension of liquor trading
hours.

City bowl pubs get

B
eer lovers from the northern su-
burbs will have to mosey on down
to the city centre to taste the highly
sung new unpasteurised Tank Beer.
Castle 1895 Tank Beer, said to be
draught beer at its best, was launched by
South African Breweries (SAB) at The
Long Street Cafe on Wednesday, one of
only four pubs in South Africa that will
stock the beer - for now.
Previously only available to SABbrew
masters themselves, Brewery Fresh
Castle 1895 Draught Tank beer is piped
directly fromNewlandsBrewerys tanks
into a dedicated Fresh Beer Truck,
straight to 500L copper tanks and in to
your glass, all in a matter of hours after
it has been brewed.
Nearly all South African beer is pas-
teurised to afford it a longer shelf life,
but during this process some of beers li-
vely characteristics can be diminished,
said SAB trade brewer Denis da Silva.
He said the pasteurisation process re-
quires heat treatment and causes oxida-
tion and takes away some of the subtle
taste and aroma from the beer.
However, with good hygiene and
short delivery lead times, pasteurisation
is not necessary, making it the freshest
beer you will ever drink, he says.
The date of when the beer was brewed
will even be written on a tab on the tap
and the tank will have to be consumed
within a few days of filling.
To transport unpasteurised Castle
1895 Draught under the strict hygienic
conditions, a specially engineered bre-
wery fresh tank beer truck was develo-
ped to ensure the beer is kept between
two and four degrees Celsius throughout
the delivery process.
There is no need for the use of dispen-
sing gas like carbon dioxide, as compres-
sed air is used to move beer from a liner
inside the tanks.
The beer thus has no contact with air
until it hits your glass, he said.
LongStreetCaf is oneof the fourCape
Townbars to beunveiled as a venuewhe-
re Castle 1895 Draughts Brewery Fresh
Tank Beer will be served.
In addition to Ferrymans Tavern, Fo-
resters Arms and Long Street Cafe,
which have already launched the pro-
duct, by the end of November Quay Four
will also be included.
But is it the most distinctive tasting
beer available in South Africa, as clai-
med by SAB?
Smooth it definitely is, with a unique
full flavour, but the proof is in the pud-
ding - at R38 a pint.
