Works of Justice
A Fund to aid the Work of Social Justice
Most parishioners are aware of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development
(CCHD) that conducts a collection in our parishes in November. CCHD is the
national, anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. The Bishops have
given CCHD the mission to address the root causes of poverty in the United States
by promoting and supporting community-controlled, self-help organizations.
You may not be aware that 25% of the funds collected in the CCHD campaign
remains in our Diocese. These proceeds help support “Works of Justice” fund,
which awards up to $5,000 for organizations that meet the criteria of operating
local anti-poverty programs. Works of Justice Funds are available for all
organizations that fit the criteria of addressing root causes of poverty. To learn
more or to apply, please contact Tom Parlin at the Catholic Charities office at
[email protected] or 454-2270 ext. 246

From the Heart by Fr. Fasnacht
“Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I
send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,
“Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose
sins you retain are retained.” Jn 20:21-23
According to the bible and Church teaching we sin every day. Sin builds
up on our soul and causes spiritual problems like spiritual blindness and
enslavement to sin. When we go to confession all our sins are removed and we
are given healing and freedom.
The Church teaches that Catholics should go to confession on a “frequent
and regular” basis. According to the precepts of the Church, Catholics are
required to go to confession at least once a year; but that is the bare minimal if
we have not committed a mortal sin. Frequent and regular means once a month.
Sometimes people say, “Why do I need to go confess my sins to a priest?
I go out into the woods and confess my sins to God.” Whose plan is that? That
is not what the bible or the Church teach for removal of sins. That is your plan
not God’s plan. In the gospel above, Jesus wants people to confess their sins to
their bishop and priests. Confession is a great gift from God. We need to follow
his plan and let him wash us clean with his mercy and love.
God bless,
Fr. Fasnacht
