Dear Parishioners, and Friends of St. Lawrence:
So many things bombard us each week – maybe
each day, it’s difficult to keep focus and center on
priorities. I am sure each of you find yourself pulled
in many directions and have a challenging time from
things that need addressed but there are no resources
– financial or energy to deal with them.
After that cold weather spell, I am so grateful that
our maintenance people recommended the new
furnace and air conditioning system that relied on
central heating and air rather than the boiler system
of heating water and pumping it through pipes to heat
the church. Last year our boilers could barely reach
60 degrees. This year it would have failed
completely.
Presently we are exploring new carpeting for the
church but need to do some work on the church
interior before we install new carpet.
Much work has been done on the outside and we
have continued to invest in preserving our church
building by serious repair of the outside. Soon the
west side will be completed and this summer we will
focus on the clock/bell tower and the east and south
side of the building. By the time of my retirement,
the outside should be pretty secure from the weather
and inside issues can be addressed.
In the meantime, we always need to focus on what
the church is about – deepening our union with God
and one another – forming a people of faith whose
lives together reflect the light/love of God. Like with
LED lights – a small one doesn’t give off much light,
but many together are extremely bright.
So far we’ve had close to 200 parishioners
respond to Fruitful Harvest – that is out of 481
registered families -- almost a 40% response. That
leaves us with 60% unaccounted. Maybe we have
that many living in poverty and are unable to
contribute. Currently we are $11,000 short of our
diocesan goal. Should we not reach it, we are
required to pay $11,000, but also we will lose
$13,700 – or the 10% rebate. That means our
shortfall will cost us $24,700 – and any monies
pledged but not collected. The Fruitful Harvest is not
an optional goal (it would be nice, but it doesn’t
matter), but it has serious ramifications for our
budget and what is possible for our parish.
God Bless,
Fr. Dave

PARISH MINISTRIES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
ADULT FAITH FORMATION COLUMN (Sue Wilhelm)
Attention Parents
The children’s Liturgy of the Word will be led by
Karen Hoffman and by Sophia Senese
I am a member of the Household of God. God is
head of my household.
This week’s Sunday liturgy readings have a clear
message: God prepares us and graces us to go and
spread the good news of Christ’s encounter with us.
Our faith is not ours to horde! The Holy Spirit is
inviting us to be witnesses to all the ways God
graces us in our everyday lives. This is the very
purpose of participating in the Be My Witness
small groups. These meetings assist us in
recognizing and deepening God’s encounter with us.
And then to be willing to witness to these encounters
by simply telling our story of how God has been at
work in us. Please do consider signing up. We still
have plenty of spaces available and hope to order the
books for you very soon.
On another note, as Households of God, we witness
to one another these same encounters. Paul tells us
today, “By the grace of God, I am what I am.”
Meaning, God’s grace enables me to be my best
self—to live the Gospel message in the particular
circumstances of my life, of our life as a household
of God. So perhaps this week, as a household, take a
moment each day to recognize and share how God’s
grace has assisted you in doing what God desires of
you.

Grilled Buttered Toast Breakfast
Sunday, February 24
Going down “memory lane.” In days
long gone, grilled buttered toast was
served to the St. Lawrence School
students after daily Mass. Back then you could not
eat anything after midnight and receive communion.
This special toast and milk were served after Mass.
We will try to “duplicate” this on Sunday,
February 24 after the 8am and 10am Masses at
the Knights of Columbus Hall. Other items on the
menu are: sausage gravy and biscuits, donuts, fruit
and chocolate and white milk. If you would like to
help, call Jeanette at the parish Office. There is no
charge for the breakfast. Hope to see you on Feb. 24. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

GOD’S SUMMONS Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first
response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his
sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of
unclean lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty
fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter
fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for
I am a sinful man.”
Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to
follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart.
When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who
will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.”
We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are
reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in
our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in
anything else won’t lead to anything.
What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness?
What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will
it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to
accept your call to be God’s messenger? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
