Sheltered Accommodation

A popular choice for many is to move into Sheltered Housing whichprovides you with:

• the chance to stay independent and active, but with peace ofmind that help is close at hand;

• services and groups which visit the scheme such as mobilehairdressers, library and chiropodists;

• the chance to come and go as you please; and

• the chance to use communal facilities and get involved in thewider social life and activities such as keep fit, coffeemornings and day trips.

Typically the schemes consist of one or two bedroom self-containedflats.

You would have a weekly rent to pay and a service charge(s) whichhelps maintain the property, communal areas, Scheme Manager andCarecall out-of-hours service. If you are on a low income, HousingBenefit will usually help you with these costs.

The following pages provide some information on the ShelteredSchemes managed by Stockport Homes. If you want to apply for any ofthese properties you will need to contact the Homechoice Team on0161 474 2975. You can find information about other ShelteredSchemes on www.housingcare.org or by contacting the differentHousing Associations listed at the end of this leaflet.

Sheltered Scheme Managers

Hi, I’m the Scheme Manager at RussellGardens, and you will find other SchemeManagers like me at all of Stockport Homes’other Sheltered Schemes. When you first moveinto your home I can help you settle in. I willstay in contact with you to check everything isok on a day-to-day basis and support you asmuch as you need.

I wouldn’t provide you with care or carry out personal tasks such ascleaning, bathing or helping with medication – but if you find you needthis I can help you to get in touch with services that provide this. I’ll alsobe there if you have a problem or need advice.

When you live here you can get involved in as many or as few of theactivities as you like. At Russell Gardens we arrange keep-fit and otherleisure trips such as swimming and walks. If you want to practicecomputer games so you can beat your family and friends we have aNintendo Wii. Residents at the scheme will all meet up for lunches,bingo and quizzes, and much more. We always welcome newsuggestions so just let me know. Each of the schemes regularly hassomething going on so you won’t miss out.

Over the next few pages you’ll find lots of information about each of ourschemes, and you’ll be able to decide for yourself which one is best foryou. Then all you need to do is register your details with the HomechoiceTeam and keep your eye open for properties that get advertised eachfortnight. There’s even a Homechoice Support Assistant that can helpyou with this, just ask Homechoice when you register.

Staying where you areMany people will wish to remain in their current home, where they feel atease and comfortable in their surroundings, although it is important toconsider if the property still meets your needs and requirements. If itdoesn’t then there are a variety of options that you can consider,depending on whether you rent or own your own home.

Help available can include minimum support such as a floating supportworker, help with the cost of living in your property, help with improvingaccessibility around your home or extra help with the provision ofservices, which could take the form of help with bathing, meals onwheels and social activities. A list of agencies that provide this type ofhelp can be found at the back of this leaflet.

Moving in with family or friendsThe decision to move in with family or friends needs to be thoughtthrough properly, and it is vital to ensure that you have a good strongrelationship with them. It is very different to live with someone asopposed to being a regular visitor or good friend. You will need to havean agreement covering such things as living, sleeping and eatingarrangements and also your financial contribution to the bills andexpenses. It may be a good idea to try the move on a trial basis beforemaking a final commitment.

Buying retirement housingYou may currently own your own home, but wish to move to a smallerproperty that is more manageable and cheaper to run. Some of thisaccommodation is provided on a leasehold basis, including help withremovals from your old house and the availability of a Scheme Managerwho organises maintenance and other services. When thinking aboutthe cost you should also consider whether the service charges will beaffordable to you.

Moving to housing where help or care is at handExtra Care Housing provides care and support for older people andhelps them to live independently for as long as possible. It is sometimescalled “very sheltered housing”.

The schemes consist of self-contained flats, designed to suit the needsof older people.

Extra Care Housing gives you the security and privacy of your ownhome, with additional facilities on the premises and care and supportstaff either based on-site or on-call.

Moving to Extra Care Housing can ensure a more flexible approach istaken in responding to the times in your life when your circumstanceschange.

Care homes look after the needs of older people who are no longer ableto live independently in their own home, even with help from family andfriends or with community care. Care homes are available with or withoutnursing care and are managed by Stockport Council, HousingAssociations, charities and private individuals or companies. Typicallycare homes are staffed 24 hours a day and residents have their ownroom, often with ensuite facilities. Bathrooms in care homes will havespecialist aids and equipment for disabled residents. All meals areprovided and staff will assist residents with their personal care.
