Artists that were inspired during the movement

Modernism expanded out into the late 19th century and reached to the early stages of the 20th century. During the art movement, many variety of art styles were produced. As found, art movements such as Cubism, Expressionism and Surrealism which artists such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Metzinger, Matthias Grünewald, El Greco, Max Ernst and many others. Many artists have produced designs that have been inspired by other desidesigners and part of their designs have resulted into being classiiedas one of the art movements.

Cubism

Expressionism

Modernism is an art movement that signiicantly aims to modify classical and traditional forms of art. During the 20th Century period, it was diversed between a variety of art movements. At the time, many people were innuenced within this period which led to developments in many areas such as art, architecture and also design. As the times changed including the large growth of many city’s and sculptures, these elemethese elements were highly innuenced and began to shape the Modernist era.

Pop Art

Minimalism

Post Modernism existed from the mid 20th century. During this period, a range of work was produced that has been experimented and classiiedas different phases in art and design. Art movements such as pop art and minimalism were developed however there are many more that are in thepost modernism stage. Artists that promoted pop art were: Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Banksy, they have produced a range of boldccoloured and distinct consistency in their designs. They have shaped theictional character portraits that make it crisp and at on canvas for display.Although art and design in the minimalist stage have produced contrastingdesigns to pop art, they still share a common technique. Donald Judd, Frank Stella, Grant Wiggins, and Braian Master were noted for their association for their minimalist designs. Their abstract paintings distinguisha strong impact of a new shape of canvas elements of using bold colours and and collaborative use of geometric form.

Post Modernism is a late 20th century style and concept of arts, architecture and criticism which represents a withdrawal from modernism and is characterized by earlier styles and conventions, a mixture of a range of artistic styles and media. It was a critical response of the Modernist period that opposed elements such as order, style and structure. There were many artists that worked around this within the period, it has changed achanged architecture, art and music itself. For example, Tom Wessellmann who worked within the style of Pop art. This example relates to the Modernist period as pop art was contradicting the style in comparison to its work. The style was originally based on cartoon characters, which responded well with comic books, which was demonstrated by solid colours with black boarders that encased the design. It also included small text boxes which annotated the imagery.

Modernism v.s Post Modernism The Difference

Modernism Post modernism- Collection of cultural movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

- Postmodernism means, 'after the modern'. It was a reaction to modernism and was introduced during the Second World War.

- Hierarchy, order and centralized control of knowledge - Based on an anarchical and one that is complex, ambiguous and diverse.

- Improvement in every aspect of life by involving science and technology. - Belief that science and technology will not progress and function from this.

- Modernist approach was objective, theoretical and analytical - Postmodernism approach was based on subjectivity.

- Art as unique object and nished work authenticated by the artist.

- Seriousness of intention and purpose. - Challenges seriousness and based on play and irony.

- Modernism considers the original works as authentic. - Highly innuenced by things propagated through media.

- Art authenticated by audience and sharing identity with the artist.

- Structured layout, original text, readable font. - Encourages abstract methods and contradict any organization.

- Cubism, expressionism, construtivism. - Surrealism, abstract art.

- Within a piece of art has a purpose of creation. - Pretends that art is meant to be meaningful.

ChangesOver the years art and design has moved on, developed and graduallybecoming more creative. Design has been distinguished into differentcategories and have been a great innuence through a range of factors, thisincludes inspiration of other designers, business, social and political issues. These elements that are used in design, in my opinion will become knownand remembered as being successful. We all remember certain artists desidesigns due to their unique style of representation that has been an innuence to our lives. What does that lead to?Both modernism and post modernism has become an important era towards the way we produce our designs. Under each design comes with acategory and under that, a few sub categories, all of which we can identify.Producing designs can be outcomed as it being simple or busy, dependingon the circumstance, the images I have displayed relate to both modernistand post modernist art. A somewhat modernist approach would be simpleand iand intuitive to absorb and post modernist would be lled with chaotic art.

Based on the knowledge I have gained through the concepts and differences of modernism and post modernism, I have produced a brief set of notes that cover valuable content within the periods. This containedinformation about the movements, when it occurred, what art movementswere involved and who thrived within the movement. As a result of thisI have learnt and improved my knowledge within these movements and understand the style and innuences that occurred within this period.

ExampleSuprematism

Based on my research that I have gathered into the history of Modernism and Post Modernism, I will explore the nature of the art movement ofSuprematism. With this knowledge, I hope to gain a better insight of thebackground of the movement and acknoledge any social or political factorsthat have been innuenced by the content.

Origin 1913-1917Suprematism was a highly innuential movement during the modernist period. It was discovered by a Russian painter named Kazimir Malevich, themovement focused on basic geometric forms, such as circles, squares, lines, and rectangles, painted in a limited range of colors. This has developed intoa unique style of design which affected areas in architecture and ne art.

StyleAs I previously mentioned before, the structure to which this movmentdelivers involve forming geometric shapes together to be combined inworks of abstract art. The simplicity of shape forming allows them to construct a representation of an image in geometric form.

El Lizzistsky Example

Based on the inital research of Suprematism, and background of Modernism and Post Modernism, I will analyse the work of Designer El Lizzitsky. With this knowledge of the artist, I hope to understand more of the movement that the designer has accomplished and achieve anysocial or political innuences that may have caused the artist to becomeinspired by.

BiographyEl Lizzitsky was a Russian born artist, painter, typographer and architect that was born in 1890. He has designed for many exhibitions for the SovietUnion in the early 20th century. His development of the ideas behind the Suprematist art movement were very innuential in the development of the Bauhaus and the Constructivist art movements, which led to greaterimprovements during the 1920’s and has been an inspiring Graphic DDesigner since.

StyleAs described, El Lizzitsky represents work of the Suprematist art movementbecause his work shows resemblence of the Suprematism movement on the previous slide, which has identical involvement to the description given. As a result, El Lizzitsky’s work collaborates well with the elements of the structure and form of the art movement as evidently shown with geometric forms.

Origin 1914

Based on my research that I have gathered into the history of Modernism and Post Modernism, I will explore the nature of the art movement ofVorticism. With this knowledge, I hope to gain a better insight of thebackground of the movement and acknoledge any social or political factorsthat have been innuenced by the content.

Style

Vorticism was a short lived modernist movement in British art and poetry of the early 20th century. It was partly inspired by Cubism. It was announced that in 1914, Wyndham Lewis released a magazine ‘Blast’ containing its manifesto and relation to Cubism. He saw Vorticism as an alternative to Cubism. Vorticism was given its name by Ezra Pound, although Lewis was the central gure in behancing the movement due topproducing designs similiar to the movement.

The movement simpli es itself similiar to Cubism however favours of a geometric style tending towards abstraction. Fragments of objects are broken up and reassembled in an abstracted form, the perspective of producing this art movement objecti es the design from one viewpoint, into multiple solutions of different viewpoints to present the subject in agreater context.

ExampleVorticism

Example

Based on the inital research of Vorticism, and background of Modernism and Post Modernism, I will analyse the work of Designer David Bomberg. With this knowledge of the artist, I hope to understand more of the movement that the designer has accomplished and achieve anysocial or political innuences that may have caused the artist to becomeinspired by.

As described, David Bomberg represents work of the Vorticist art movement because his work shows resemblance of the vorticist movement on the previous slide. As a result, David Bomberg’s work collaborates well with the elements of the structure and form of the art movement as evidently shown with limited striking colours, angular shapes and overlaying strong grid work

David Bomberg was an English painter that was born in 1890. He was an audacious painter which he painted a series of complicated geometriccompositions which he combined using innuences from cubism and futurism. Bomberg moved to a more gurative style in the 1920’s and hiswork became dominated through portraits and landscape art whichdeveloped into a more expressionist technique. Throughout the 1930’s hisart became more broader with his responses towards landscape inScotland and Spain. His landscape and gure paintings include some of hismost powerful works.

This unique style of typography is the most used in the 20th century andtherefore set as a default type on documents. With its natural spacing andboldness, the font has been conngured into many other variant forms. forms.

Helvetica is a widely used sans serif typeface which is still present now. It was developed in 1957 by Swiss typeface designer Max Meidinger andEdüard Hoffmann. It was originally named Neue Haas Grotesk but laterchanged to Helvetica which began to be marketed internationally in 1961.It was made popular with Swiss design and advertising agencies were rocketing in selling this design style to its clients. The typeface was widely used in corporate logos, signage and nne art prints.

Based on my research that I have gathered into the history of Modernismand Post Modernism, I will explore the nature of the art movement ofhelvetica. Max Meidinger has enchanced a simplistic typeface into producing designs that form dimensions of different characteristics of the typeface. His work has a great impact on helvetica origination and structured his designs well keeping to a plain bold colour scheme and using a mixture ofdifferent and contrasting variants.

Max Meidinger was a Swiss typeface designer that was born in 1910 in Zurich. He was well known for creating the Neue Haas Grostesk, also known as Helvetica, to which was marketed and went global. He had went to workfor an advertising company at the age of 26 where he worked as a typographer and developed and improved his skills. Ten years later, he wasthen later employed by Haas type foundry as a representative where hechanged history for the most used typeface Helvetica.

From what I gathered from my research into the basis of modernism andpost modernism I will explore the components of what is needed in amagazine. One of these components I am going to research on aremastheads. I will look into a range of different mastheads which will aid inproducing and developing my own mastheads successfully. Aswell as that,I will also consider the aspects of masthead design which focus on size, structure, positioning, colour, layout and texture which enhance the performance of the design.

A masthead is a logo usually found in the front pages of a magazine or publication which signiies the identity of the magazine or publication. This can take into account into many forms such as boxes, banners or subsided into the background, its purpose is to promote and make awareness of the identity of the product brand. A masthead also containsinformation about the publisher which would prove useful when searching for them.

Page 13: New Visual Language research

Magazine cover designs serve various purposes, one of which is promotingthe brand and must be unique from other cover page competitors. Each new series must have a different design to it but relate them to theprevious issue so the reader can recognise the brand. It has to present the publications content to draw the reader into wanting to read it. There are different categories to cover designs, each will signify what you will expect

in the content from the cover page. Cover pages take effort and alot of timebut is the most important part of a magazine creation.

By doing this, I can determine which will be most suitable design for my

overall content.

Looking into the research of modernism and post modernism from whichI analysed and gathered, I will look into a range magazine cover designs. From this, I can compare various different designs and relate them to the mastheads on the previous slide to keep to the same theme and technique.

Why are they important?

Page 14: New Visual Language research

A magazine contents page is used to aid the navigation of a certain content or page number. It is most useful if an issue contains many pages, the contents page helps categorise information to lter between certain subjects.

Based on the research I have acknowledgeed in the background of modernism and post modernism, I will look into components that arefound most useful in a magazine. With that said, I will investigate into various magazine content pages that would help organise my content

efficiently. By doing this, it will help the reader locate any required

content, in aid from my previous slides, I would compare different contentpages to help relate to the same technique and theme successfully.

Page 15: New Visual Language research

A magazine layout is the foundation of presenting and promoting contentto its reader. The designer must consider from the reader’s perspective, what they like too absorb. A consistent layout throughout the magazinewill still gather the reader into continue reading through stunning positioning of images and text.

Based on the research in the background of modernism and post modernism I will look into the components that are relevant for a magazine. One of these components are the construction of magazine layouts, I willinvestigate and compare a range of layouts to satisfy content storage andpresentation. Doing this effectively will guarantee my content to be distinctand annotated well followed by a series of images to aid content awareness.

Design 3 (Pristana)Here design 3 I particularly nd successful. I started off beginning by creating my layouts and enlarging texts, which leads me to using effects on my nextfour designs. The third image I am quite pleased with as it highlights the bold word ‘visual’ being complimented by angelic headings below and above theword. Although it is not distinct enough to show a good image, this lighting effect would blend well with a dark or hollow background. The next three I used colour blue to help highlight the words more greatly. I feel the fourth and fth image worked quite well in presenting the title due to the layout, as forthe last imagthe last image, it is quite abbreviated and presented in a news format.

Design 3

Page 19: New Visual Language research

Design 4 (Segoe Script) In design 4, in my opinion is quite child like and looks squiggly. I experimented with different layouts, this time changing the orientation of the perspectiveof the typeface. It didn’t turn out quite successful, I feel the typeface is quite dull even accompanied by colour. The typeface is well presented with the ability for it to be readable, however to me it doesn’t quite catch the eye for the audience and I want a typeface that would suit the logo to be suitablefor the audiences interest.

Design 4

Page 20: New Visual Language research

Design 5 (Showcard Gothic) In my opinion, design 5 is succesful, the reason being is it is quite bold and zooming which accelerates the typeface quite well. With the use of bold capitals,it makes the typeface look cartoony. I feel I may of used the typeface quite boldly which make them look like blocks, to repel from this, I started testing several effects and the outcome of them made my typeface highlighted with a patterened coating. I do feel the layout of the typeface would beneet well with the template.

Design 5

Page 21: New Visual Language research

Design 6 (Magneto) I quite like the outcome of design 6, this typeface I feel was suitable in manipulating with different effects. I quite like the design of the typeface and itreally suited well with the layout I have produced. Image 1 I started using shadowy effects to create a little fading distortion to the black colour I have used.Image 2 I particularly like the most as it looks indented into the canvas making it look crafted, although I feel the colour is quite dull. Image 3 and 4 arequite bold and dinstinct in presenting the title and the design of it feels absolute. Lastly image 5 and 6 look professional as it used the same indentmnenteeffect and is outlined with a less dull colour.

Design 6

Page 22: New Visual Language research

Design 7 (Forte) Here in design 7, looks like a typeface that would catch the eye of the audience. It is quite bold and the interior of gapped letters such as ‘a’ and ‘g’ lookpresented well. In the next few images, I have changed the layout and presented the word ‘language’ vertically to see the outcome of it. In my opinionthe presentation looks decent however it would leave much space on the masthead template and would be presented in a wierd viewpoint. The last imagehowever I approve with the highlight of the word ‘visual’ to greatly improve the impact of the title.

Design 7

Page 23: New Visual Language research

Design 8 (Bauhaus) I quite like the style that this typeface has provide. It represents bold and mechanic visual features which I quite nd amusing. Here I have experimented with several different possible solutions. I started playing around with different formats and colours and found which ones were suitable. In my opinion, all of the designs are di cult to choose from, however I would consider the bottom thre images as they are layered in sync with each other to make them lok connected and can distinctively see the outline of the character shapes.

Design 8MAGAZINE MASTHEADS

Page 24: New Visual Language research

Design 9 (Fixedsy) Here I have gathered the four best outcomes of the typeface xedsy and collaborated them with a template. The black and white versions quite caught my eyeas they contrast with the text and template. The format of the layout of the text on the orange and grey proved to be sucessful aswell.

Design 9MAGAZINE MASTHEAD TEMPLATES

FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION

Page 25: New Visual Language research

Design 9 (Pristana) The one that struck me the most was the black template followed by angelic text. It quite gives that eclipse impression and suitable for a golden or fancycover page. The layout and colour pallet used on each of these templates are also sucessful, however the black template was proven the best result inmy opinion.

Design 10MAGAZINE MASTHEAD TEMPLATES

FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION

Page 26: New Visual Language research

Design 11 (Showcard Gothic) This typeface combined with a template looks quite thriller moment absorbing as complimented on the grey template. In my opinion, I would say that the greyand white templates are succesful, as for the top two, the format doesn’t suit the colour of the template.

Design 11MAGAZINE MASTHEAD TEMPLATES

FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION

Page 27: New Visual Language research

Design 12 (Magneto) This typeface I particularly was quite impressed with, the effects used on the bottom templates shows an imprinted depth on the template as if it were crafted manually. The outcomes of all these designs turned out to be qvery sucessful and a hard decision to choose which one to develop.

Design 12MAGAZINE MASTHEAD TEMPLATES

FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION

Page 28: New Visual Language research

Design 13 (Forte) The typeface I think is successful, however the collaboration with the templates on several doesn’t quite match the format of the type. I have experimentedwith different outcomes in topic of colour and structure. The grey template in my opinion is the most successful, the black template is a consideration of development. The white template I didnt particularly like the outcome as the vertical text leaves the template quite blank.

Design 3 (Showcard Gothic) I have selected these two examples as I thought they would attractthe audience due to the type, however through further developmentI didn’t think the outcome of these two designs proved to be sucessful.

Design 4 (Magneto) These designs I thought were successful, I quite like how the depth of the textsurrounded by the effects has made it look quite manufactured.

Design 5 Design 6

Design 5 (Forte) In my opinion, image 2 has made a good impression due to its holyrevenance design. Image 1 however lacks the complexity of effects therefore making it look dull.

Design 6 (Bauhaus) These two designs I didnt particularly enjoy the outcome, I feel that it needs moreimprovement and that the masthead looks quite dull.

Design 9 Design 10

Design 9 Within design 9, I have created a little more reminiscent perspective. The masthead here perfectly in my opinion syncs well with text along with the effects to enchance that Visual look.

Design 10 This design in my opinion looks quite robotic and doesn’t compliment my magazinelayout theme. The text itself in my opinion suits the background however theeffects doesn’t match the text.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTMagazine Masthead

Page 35: New Visual Language research

Why I chose these as successful I have chosen these 3 designs as successful as in my opinion, notonly suit my cover page but the magazine aswell. I feel that thesemastheads are visually presented professionally.

Could they be improved? I do think that they could be enhanced with more texture, however I have kept a basic and consistent layout to keep the masthead plain and simple in sync with the magazine.

EVALUATIONSuccessful Results

Page 36: New Visual Language research

Here I have taken photos of when I went on holiday and took the majority of pictures of buildings and architecture. The reason being is this would relatewell with the theme of my magazine and would produce a nice spectable upon my front cover. I started collaborating these designs with my sucessful mastheads and also used effects on Photoshop to aid in the construction of the glance of the front cover. The rst image I don’t particularly like as it looks chaotic and and ridden. Image 2 and 3 I nd quite successful, image 3 I have used a smudge effect on the street to observe a timelapse and enchancethe building more.

More photos have been used in relation to my theme of the magazine. Image 1 in myopinion is proven successful as it observes the skies natural beauty and contrasts of the dull background with synergy of colour. In my opinion, these 3 images are succesfull and look visually atrative from my point of view. I quite like the inverted effect on image 1 didn’t turn outchaotic as the previous designs, it makes it look more illustrated. Image 2 gives a wonderful view in contrasting with that, a dark sky that brings a wonderfulscenery. Image 3 is the most successful design as it is forrlled with golden purity.

Here I have experimented with the front cover a bit more. I started manipulating different effects to see what different outcomes it would provide me. Most of these look quite chaotic and ghostly but I like the stenciled effect it has provided. Image 1 seems to have collaborated well with the masthead andthe brightness of the image makes it look less chaotic and I like how the diferent shades of grey have formed well with each other and havn’t mixed intoeach other.

Here I have experimented with different mastheads and text below the magazine to see which outcome wil be suitable. In my opinion, image 2 quite blends well with the masthead as it has a misty effect to make it forecast the highlight of the theme. Image 3 does’nt suit the theme of the front cover as the mastheadwould suit more of a golden or bright shiny and less dull theme. Lastly, image 1 I questioned as the masthead in my opinion sticks out more rather than itbeing blended in with the magazine which is too be focused on rather than one feature.

Here as you may of seen from the previous slides, I have synergised the image that was in the experimentation phase to collaborate with the front cover as theback cover. I think this style suits quite well in keeping a similiar colour pallet and theme.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTSynergy

Page 44: New Visual Language research

The back cover on this magazine is to be argued that the landscape of it suits the front cover however I can’t imagine when I look at the front and then theback of the magazine, it would relate. This reason due to the grey dull theme in the front followed by the abstract ghosty blue sky at the back.

Issue 1: Form Follows Functionan exploration of modernism and postmodernism

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTSynergy

Page 45: New Visual Language research

Issue 1: Form Follows Functionan exploration of modernism and postmodernism

Here I don’t like the outcome of the collaboration of the back with the front cover. If it were to work, it would be quite dark and chaotic that the audiencewould only glance at the magazine to look and not to look out of interest. I’m dissapointed how the wonderful illustrated visuals on the front coverstrongly contradicts the back cover and does not match.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTSynergy

Page 46: New Visual Language research

I have started conducting my contents page to navigate to the audience on where my topic of content are located. I have experimented with different typeand features to see what the best outcome would look. Most of these designs look quite dull due to the accompaniment of grey, Image 3 doesn’t appeal to meas the image looks quite horriic and ghostly from a memoir. Image 1 and 2 I quite like as they are backed up with contrasting colours and include morefeatures and play with type.

EXPERIMENTATIONContents page

Page 47: New Visual Language research

Here I think the contents pages have been more productively constructed. I have included more type experimentation, colour and distortion of type. Image 3 shows the gradual font size of the page numbers increasing and the topic decreasing making a tornado shape. Image 2, I have distorted textto make it sync with the opposition of the cases. Image 1 is more constructively modern as they are geometric forms in simple colours.

EXPERIMENTATIONContents page

Through potential decision making I have chosen four suitable content pages that would be appealing and would suit the theme. I quite the idea conceptof all of them in representing different layouts.
