Brain-dead city girl givesothers fresh lease of life

Bangalore: Her family grieved her plight,but didn’t forget to ensure that through or-gan donation, someone, somewhere got asecond chance at life.

This summarizes the story of a fatherwho donated five organs of his 19-year-olddaughter after doctors declared her braindead in Bangalore last week.

Natasha N (name changed), a second-year engineering student at NITTEMeenakshi Institute of Technology, wasfound unconscious in her room by room-mates on March 2. At M S Ramaiah Memo-rial Hospital, she was diagnosed with brainhaemorrhage, bleeding inside the skull.

Despite the best efforts of her doctors,her condition did not improve and eventu-ally this Jharkhand girl had to be put on aventilator. Later, she was deemed brain dead.

Her father and a cousin came fromJharkhand and her father decided to donateher eyes, kidney and liver. The Zonal Co-or-dination Committee of Karnataka for Trans-portation (ZCCK) alerted patients on thewaiting list for kidney transplant and theoperations were done at Global Hospital andManipal Hospital. Since there was no pa-tient in Bangalore who needed a liver, theTamil Nadu authorities were informed anda patient in Christian Medical College, Vel-lore got it. The eyes were donated to MintoHospital. The organs were removed onMarch 5. All the transplants have been doneand recipients are recovering, said hospi-tal authorities. Natasha’s body has been tak-en to Jharkhand for the last rites.

MULTIPLE ORGAN DONATIONWhen a patient dies a natural death, onlythe cornea or bone marrow can be trans-planted. However, about 12 organs can betransplanted from a brain dead person.

Although the number of people declaredbrain dead is high, very few give away their

organs. “The lack of awareness is thebiggest obstacle. People are ignorant thatbeing brain dead is equivalent to beingdead. However, their relatives don’t comeforward for donation because the heart isstill beating,” said Dr D Ramesh, secretary,ZCCK. Also, people are particular aboutthe last rites and want the body intact, headded.

This is the first multiple organ dona-tion in the state this year. There were 12cases in 2009, of which eight were multi-organ donations.

Shillong: The wife of an Eastern Air Com-mand (EAC) Sergeant hanged her two mi-nor daughters before committing suicideby hanging herself at their official quar-ter at the EAC premises in Upper Shillongon Friday night.

Parveen Akhtar (26) was found hanginginside the quarteralong with her twodaughters - SamitaAfreen (5) and SaniaAfreen (3) - by hus-band SergeantShamim Akhtarwhen he came homefrom office at 4 pm.The family hailsfrom Bihar. “TheSergeant was in of-fice when the inci-dent took place andcame to know aboutthe deaths when hearrived at his quar-ter (No 38/10) afteroffice,” an Air Forcesource said.

cident following which a case was registeredat the Jhalupara police station. Police are yetto make any breakthrough into the incident.“Foul play cannot be ruled out,” a police of-ficial said, adding that the woman had usedplastic ropes to kill her children and herself.

“A case of unnatural death has beenregistered and we’ll wait to see what thepost-mortem reveals, which will eventu-ally determine the course of our investi-gation,” East Khasi Hills SP A Mawthohsaid. The bodies have been removed to theShillong Civil Hospital for autopsy. Policealso informed that probe was on to ascer-tain whether any family problem hadprompted the woman to take such an ex-treme step. Besides the cops, the Air Forceis also conducting its own investigationinto the incident.

Bhopal: After the row over SuryaNamaskar and yoga, Shivraj SinghChouhan-led BJP government inMadhya Pradesh appears to beheading for another showdownwith minorities: this time, over theBhagwad Gita that the CM wantsas part of the curriculum in gov-ernment-run schools.

The fresh controversy surfacedafter Chouhan, during a visit toMirzapur on Friday, said the stategovernment was contemplating in-troducing ‘Bhagwad Gita’ in schoolcurriculum. He had gone to seekblessing of Swami Argaranand athis ashram on his 52 birthday. CMhad said for moral education, studyof the Gita is necessary.

“Bhagwad Gita mein gyan kabhandar hai (Bhagwad Gita is atreasure of knowledge). Childrenshould be given the knowledge ofGita and there should not be anypolitics over it,” Chouhan said. He,however, specified that the deci-sion regarding inclusion of Gitain the curriculum “will not be tak-en in a hurry’’. A committee wouldlook into it and discuss it with allsections of people and education-ists before a final decision.

Soon after BJP came to powerin MP in December 2003, the stategovernment “introduced” singingof “Vande Mataram” in schoolsand government offices. Despiteits best efforts, the state failed tomake this mandatory in schoolsand government institutions asMuslims objected to it.

We have to understandthat if Bhagwad Gita becomespart of school text, then Koran,Bible and Guru Granth Sahib willhave to be taught too.’’

Mumbai: For all those whoare planning to make it to top-ranked institutions, here is aword of caution: do not go bythe publicized rating of thecollege or the university. TOI’sinvestigations have revealedthat quite a few of the so-called top universities havebeen flaunting ratings thathave already expired.

The MS University of Bar-oda, for example, boasts of afour-star grade awarded by theNational Assessment and Ac-creditation Council (NNAC);the only catch is that this rat-ing was annulled as far ago asin January 2006. This is not asolitary case. Seventy other In-dian institutes, including PuneUniversity, Mangalore Uni-versity and the Central Insti-tute of English and ForeignLanguages in Hyderabad, havebeen advertising rankings thatexpired long ago.

At a time when the min-istry of human resources de-velopment is serving hardpunches to private anddeemed universities, its owninstitutes are sitting pretty on

old grades, which are nolonger valid. While accredi-tation is not mandatory, NAACrules specify that grades arevalid only for five years afterthey are awarded and they ex-pire at the end of that term.Colleges and universities haveto re-apply for inspection toreceive fresh ranking.

In fact, in 2008, the NAAC’sexecutive committee had an-nounced that the institutes —whose grades were about tocomplete the five-year term orwere in the last quarter of thefifth year — should submit aletter of intent and a requestfor re-accreditation. However,most universities gave re-as-sessment a skip and contin-ued splashing their old grades.

Heads of several of the uni-versities — whose NAAC rank-ings have expired — that TOIcontacted said the paper workfor re-accreditation was takinglonger than they had thoughtand so the lapse. In most oth-er instances, the institutes hadoverlooked the fact that theirgrades had expired and theywere still using them. RameshGoyal, vice-chancellor of MSUniversity in Baroda, said hestarted the process of apply-ing for reaccreditation after hetook charge in 2008. “I amaware that our NAAC gradeexpired in 2006. After I tookover, I started the process ofapplying for re-assessment andwe are likely to get our newgrade soon,’’ Goyal added.

Chennai: The cyber crimewing officials of the CB-CIDprobing the Rs 26.55-lakh in-ternet banking fraud netteda big catch when they ar-rested an assistant vice-pres-ident of a major private bankin Hyderabad. Apart from aperson arrested from Chen-nai in January, two Banga-lore-based men had been ar-rested in connection with thecase last Sunday.

Police said BS SainathReddy (38), an assistant vice-president of Axis Bank atHyderabad, was held on thebasis of a complaint from SSalahudeen, a businessman,who claimed that Rs 26.55lakh had been fraudulentlytransferred from his accountthrough internet banking be-tween July and August 2009.
