TIMES NATION 15 SUNDAY TIMES OF INDIA, BANGALORE MARCH 7, 2010 Brain-dead city girl gives others fresh lease of life TIMES NEWS NETWORK Bangalore: Her family grieved her plight, but didn’t forget to ensure that through or- gan donation, someone, somewhere got a second chance at life. This summarizes the story of a father who donated five organs of his 19-year-old daughter after doctors declared her brain dead in Bangalore last week. Natasha N (name changed), a second- year engineering student at NITTE Meenakshi Institute of Technology, was found unconscious in her room by room- mates on March 2. At M S Ramaiah Memo- rial Hospital, she was diagnosed with brain haemorrhage, bleeding inside the skull. Despite the best efforts of her doctors, her condition did not improve and eventu- ally this Jharkhand girl had to be put on a ventilator. Later, she was deemed brain dead. Her father and a cousin came from Jharkhand and her father decided to donate her eyes, kidney and liver. The Zonal Co-or- dination Committee of Karnataka for Trans- portation (ZCCK) alerted patients on the waiting list for kidney transplant and the operations were done at Global Hospital and Manipal Hospital. Since there was no pa- tient in Bangalore who needed a liver, the Tamil Nadu authorities were informed and a patient in Christian Medical College, Vel- lore got it. The eyes were donated to Minto Hospital. The organs were removed on March 5. All the transplants have been done and recipients are recovering, said hospi- tal authorities. Natasha’s body has been tak- en to Jharkhand for the last rites. MULTIPLE ORGAN DONATION When a patient dies a natural death, only the cornea or bone marrow can be trans- planted. However, about 12 organs can be transplanted from a brain dead person. Although the number of people declared brain dead is high, very few give away their organs. “The lack of awareness is the biggest obstacle. People are ignorant that being brain dead is equivalent to being dead. However, their relatives don’t come forward for donation because the heart is still beating,” said Dr D Ramesh, secretary, ZCCK. Also, people are particular about the last rites and want the body intact, he added. This is the first multiple organ dona- tion in the state this year. There were 12 cases in 2009, of which eight were multi- organ donations. WE’LL MISS HER She was a very jovial person who wanted to live her life to the fullest. She wanted to do an MBA course abroad. Father Donates 5 Of Her Organs, Including Eyes, Liver, Kidney IAF sergeant’s wife hangs daughters, herself in Shillong TIMES NEWS NETWORK Shillong: The wife of an Eastern Air Com- mand (EAC) Sergeant hanged her two mi- nor daughters before committing suicide by hanging herself at their official quar- ter at the EAC premises in Upper Shillong on Friday night. Parveen Akhtar (26) was found hanging inside the quarter along with her two daughters - Samita Afreen (5) and Sania Afreen (3) - by hus- band Sergeant Shamim Akhtar when he came home from office at 4 pm. The family hails from Bihar. “The Sergeant was in of- fice when the inci- dent took place and came to know about the deaths when he arrived at his quar- ter (No 38/10) after office,” an Air Force source said. Akhtar later in- formed Air Force of- ficials about the in- cident following which a case was registered at the Jhalupara police station. Police are yet to make any breakthrough into the incident. “Foul play cannot be ruled out,” a police of- ficial said, adding that the woman had used plastic ropes to kill her children and herself. “A case of unnatural death has been registered and we’ll wait to see what the post-mortem reveals, which will eventu- ally determine the course of our investi- gation,” East Khasi Hills SP A Mawthoh said. The bodies have been removed to the Shillong Civil Hospital for autopsy. Police also informed that probe was on to ascer- tain whether any family problem had prompted the woman to take such an ex- treme step. Besides the cops, the Air Force is also conducting its own investigation into the incident. MP CM for ‘Gita’ lessons in schools S u c h a n d a n a G u p t a | TNN Bhopal: After the row over Surya Namaskar and yoga, Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government in Madhya Pradesh appears to be heading for another showdown with minorities: this time, over the Bhagwad Gita that the CM wants as part of the curriculum in gov- ernment-run schools. The fresh controversy surfaced after Chouhan, during a visit to Mirzapur on Friday, said the state government was contemplating in- troducing ‘Bhagwad Gita’ in school curriculum. He had gone to seek blessing of Swami Argaranand at his ashram on his 52 birthday. CM had said for moral education, study of the Gita is necessary. “Bhagwad Gita mein gyan ka bhandar hai (Bhagwad Gita is a treasure of knowledge). Children should be given the knowledge of Gita and there should not be any politics over it,” Chouhan said. He, however, specified that the deci- sion regarding inclusion of Gita in the curriculum “will not be tak- en in a hurry’’. A committee would look into it and discuss it with all sections of people and education- ists before a final decision. Soon after BJP came to power in MP in December 2003, the state government “introduced” singing of “Vande Mataram” in schools and government offices. Despite its best efforts, the state failed to make this mandatory in schools and government institutions as Muslims objected to it. Meanwhile, state Congress fears fresh problem over Chouhan’s statement on ‘Bhag- wad Gita’. Pradesh Congress chief Suresh Pachauri told TOI, “Bhagwad Gita is a pious religious text. We all respect and honour it. But inclusion of Gita as part of academic studies in schools will lead to demand for inclusion of other religious texts in the cur- riculum. We have to understand that if Bhagwad Gita becomes part of school text, then Koran, Bible and Guru Granth Sahib will have to be taught too.’’ Muslims are anguished over CM’s statement. “Children from minority communities will not be able to attend state-run schools if the BJP government keeps mak- ing policies to promote one reli- gion through academics. First Vande Mataram, then Surya Na- maskar and now Bhagwad Gita. It looks like a calculated move to keep children from other faiths away from education,’’ said Osaf Shah- miri Khurram, All India Muslim Teohar Committee chief. Varsities continue with expired NAAC grades H e m a l i C h h a p i a | TNN Mumbai: For all those who are planning to make it to top- ranked institutions, here is a word of caution: do not go by the publicized rating of the college or the university. TOI’s investigations have revealed that quite a few of the so- called top universities have been flaunting ratings that have already expired. The MS University of Bar- oda, for example, boasts of a four-star grade awarded by the National Assessment and Ac- creditation Council (NNAC); the only catch is that this rat- ing was annulled as far ago as in January 2006. This is not a solitary case. Seventy other In- dian institutes, including Pune University, Mangalore Uni- versity and the Central Insti- tute of English and Foreign Languages in Hyderabad, have been advertising rankings that expired long ago. At a time when the min- istry of human resources de- velopment is serving hard punches to private and deemed universities, its own institutes are sitting pretty on old grades, which are no longer valid. While accredi- tation is not mandatory, NAAC rules specify that grades are valid only for five years after they are awarded and they ex- pire at the end of that term. Colleges and universities have to re-apply for inspection to receive fresh ranking. In fact, in 2008, the NAAC’s executive committee had an- nounced that the institutes — whose grades were about to complete the five-year term or were in the last quarter of the fifth year — should submit a letter of intent and a request for re-accreditation. However, most universities gave re-as- sessment a skip and contin- ued splashing their old grades. Heads of several of the uni- versities — whose NAAC rank- ings have expired — that TOI contacted said the paper work for re-accreditation was taking longer than they had thought and so the lapse. In most oth- er instances, the institutes had overlooked the fact that their grades had expired and they were still using them. Ramesh Goyal, vice-chancellor of MS University in Baroda, said he started the process of apply- ing for reaccreditation after he took charge in 2008. “I am aware that our NAAC grade expired in 2006. After I took over, I started the process of applying for re-assessment and we are likely to get our new grade soon,’’ Goyal added.
