Schedule of Social Functions Charming

and Varied—Personal Notes.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. April s—Themusical clubs of the Naval Academyrepeated their entertainment this after-noon and evening. These performanceswere given in Mahan Hall. The showgiven is called "Sylphonia” and is byDavid Stretch. The midshipmen whotook the leading parts are W. L. Blatch-ford. T. W. South. R. H. Taylor, H.Sosnoski, D. W. Gladney, P. G. Wagner,L C. Brunton, J. O. P. Dorsett, J. B.Bowen and R. D. Salmon. The orches-tra, which is an excellent one, was ledby Midshipman J. M. Lewis.

Tt also was decided to hold anotherof the dances given by the youngerset or officers which have been sohighly successful. These dances areheld at Carvel Hall, and the one lastevening was, as usual, very largely at-tended.

Mrs. C. Columbus Baldwin, who hasbeen spending two weeks at the resi-dence of Mrs. Morgan Baldwin, on Col-lege avenue, left by motor Monday forNorfolk, Va., where she will be joinedby Miss Roberta Hodgers of Water-bury, near Annapolis. Mrs. Baldwin,after a few days in Norfolk, accom-panied by Miss Hodgers, will motor toCharleston, S. C. On the way homethey will stop at the Hot Springs ofVirginia and at Greensboro, N. C. Atthe latter place they will be the guestsof Mr. and Mrs. Henry du Pont Bald-win. Mrs. Columbus Baldwin will visitat Orange. N. J., before returning toher home. Spring Hill, at Waterbury.which shortly will be opened for theSummer.

Mr. C. Columbus Baldwin was theguest of his mother here for a fewdays and left on Monday for his homein New York.

Mrs. Richard Baldwin has returnedfrom a visit of two weeks in New Yorkto her apartment in Baltimore at theLatrobe, accompanied by her sister,Mrs. Joseph Lontilhon of Paris. -Mrs.Lontilhon will remain in this countryfor a short time and then will returnto France. Mrs. Baldwin will spendthe month of April iri Baltimore, re-turning to her home at Waterbury,

entertained the members of her cardclub. The occasion was the reunionof the club in honor of Mrs. Middle-ton Semmes Guest, who recently re-turned from Europe. Among thosepresent were Mrs. Guest, Mrs. GeorgeTurner, Mrs. Lawrence Miller, Mrs.Dennis Claude, Mrs. J. Harrison Col-houn, Mrs. Henry Gearing and Mrs.Roscoe C. Bulmer.

Mrs. Bulmer returned recently froma stay of several weeks at the Hospitalfor the Women of Maryland, and ismuch improved after a severe illness.

NEW YORK, April s.—The ninth andnew'est planet, which can be seen onlythrough the most powerful of telescopes,will "personally” attend the CharityCarnival of 1930 In Madison SquareGarden the evening of April 29, takingan important part in the Dageant “Ro-mance.” It already has been announcedthat the romance of light is to be por-trayed at the carnival, which is an out-growth of the Park Avenue Street Fair,and that Venus, Juno, Minerva andothers will attend.

Mrs. Arthur B. Claflin and Mrs. Ed-ward F. Hutton, honorary chairmen,and Mrs. Eugene W. Ong, executivechairman of the carnival, have an-nounced that the ninth planet will bean important member of the carnivalcommittees and that the creation of hercostume for the occasion will evoke theskill and art of the country’s most fa-mous designers. In the light episodeMrs. Wilmerding Cramer will be elec-tric light; Mrs. Edward Slade, lamplight; Mrs. Arthur French, candle light:Mrs. Robert Condon, fire light, andMme. Bauer, moonlight.

Appropriate to the theme, the song“Romance” will be sung by Rudy Val-lee, who also will sing the “Stein Song,”assisted by his Connecticut Yankees.

Miss Katrinka Van C. Suydam hasbeen chosen chairman of the debutantecommittee for the carnival and an-nounces as members of her committeeMisses Virginia Thaw, Louise Vic-tor, Eugenia Morris. Cathleen Fox.Martha Milliken. Janet Stone, Gwen-dolyn Roome, Olive Whitman, HarrietJackson and Eugenie Greenley.

Several engagements of interest tosociety havp been announced in the lastfew days. Mr. and Mrs. William Trus-low Hyde of 1035 F’ifth avenue andCoopcrstown, N. Y.. have made knownthe engagement of their daughter, MissBeati ice Hyde, to James Hilton Marr.son of Mr. and Mrs. James Marr ofQuincy, Mass. Miss Hyde attended theSpence School and was graduated fromVassar in 1926. She is a member of theNew York Junior League and is a sis-ter of William Truslow Hyde, jr., asophomore at Yalo; of Miss Ann Hydeand of Mrs. Robert Johnston, jr., for-merly Miss Katherine B. Hyde.

The wedding will take place July 5at the Summer home of Mr. and Mrs.Hyde, at Cooperstown.

Mrs. Jacqueline Julian, daughter esMr. and Mrs. Rice Lewis Julian of theHotel Webster, this city, was married afew days ago at the St. Regis to JosephGales Holcombe of Kingston. N. Y.Only immediate friends and relativeswitnessed the ceremony, which was per-formed by the Rev, Richard Seebodeof the Church of the Saviour, Brook-lvn Heights. Mrs. Mallard Bloomer ofNew York and Benjamin Royal Hol-combe of Washington and New Yorkwere the only attendants.

Mrs. Julian was married in 1927 toLieut. Byron E. Gates of the Army AirService, and on the termination of themarriage last year in Reno was grantedpermission by the court to use her for-mer name. She was graduated fromthe Spence School in 1924 and madeher debut in this city.

Mi. Holcombe was graduated fromthe Peekskill Military Academy andserved overseas as a lieutenant in theWorld War. Mr. Benjamin Royal Hol-combe married Mrs. Svlvanus Stokes,the former Miss Margaret Fahnestock,several years ago in Newport.
