C„ APRIL 6, 1930—PART THREE. ~ SOCIETY/ Navy Academy Music Clubs Stage Delightful Program Midshipmen Entertain at Week End-—Annapolis Schedule of Social Functions Charming and Varied—Personal Notes. ANNAPOLIS, Md. April s—The musical clubs of the Naval Academy repeated their entertainment this after- noon and evening. These performances were given in Mahan Hall. The show given is called "Sylphonia” and is by David Stretch. The midshipmen who took the leading parts are W. L. Blatch- ford. T. W. South. R. H. Taylor, H. Sosnoski, D. W. Gladney, P. G. Wagner, L C. Brunton, J. O. P. Dorsett, J. B. Bowen and R. D. Salmon. The orches- tra, which is an excellent one, was led by Midshipman J. M. Lewis. Tt also was decided to hold another of the dances given by the younger set or officers which have been so highly successful. These dances are held at Carvel Hall, and the one last evening was, as usual, very largely at- tended. Mrs. C. Columbus Baldwin, who has been spending two weeks at the resi- dence of Mrs. Morgan Baldwin, on Col- lege avenue, left by motor Monday for Norfolk, Va., where she will be joined by Miss Roberta Hodgers of Water- bury, near Annapolis. Mrs. Baldwin, after a few days in Norfolk, accom- panied by Miss Hodgers, will motor to Charleston, S. C. On the way home they will stop at the Hot Springs of Virginia and at Greensboro, N. C. At the latter place they will be the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Henry du Pont Bald- win. Mrs. Columbus Baldwin will visit at Orange. N. J., before returning to her home. Spring Hill, at Waterbury. which shortly will be opened for the Summer. Mr. C. Columbus Baldwin was the guest of his mother here for a few days and left on Monday for his home in New York. Mrs. Richard Baldwin has returned from a visit of two weeks in New York to her apartment in Baltimore at the Latrobe, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Joseph Lontilhon of Paris. -Mrs. Lontilhon will remain in this country for a short time and then will return to France. Mrs. Baldwin will spend the month of April iri Baltimore, re- turning to her home at Waterbury, near Annapolis, about the Ist of May. Friday afternoon Mrs. Carryl Bryan entertained the members of her card club. The occasion was the reunion of the club in honor of Mrs. Middle- ton Semmes Guest, who recently re- turned from Europe. Among those present were Mrs. Guest, Mrs. George Turner, Mrs. Lawrence Miller, Mrs. Dennis Claude, Mrs. J. Harrison Col- houn, Mrs. Henry Gearing and Mrs. Roscoe C. Bulmer. Mrs. Bulmer returned recently from a stay of several weeks at the Hospital for the Women of Maryland, and is much improved after a severe illness. French, gave a card party Wednesday of this week in her home, on King Charles place, in honor of Mrs. Henry Hederman, wife of Lieut. Hedermair. This is the second of a series of bridge parties given by Mrs. French. Mrs. Leigh Reid of Haverford, whose husband. Dr. Reid, is attached to the college there, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Samuel Brooke, this week at her home, on Southgate avenue. Dr. and Mrs. Reid will spend the Summer at Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., where they have a cottage. Mrs. Henry Dinger. Committee Plans Benefit For Russians in Exile The Washington committee for the, education of Russian youth in exile' will present a motion picture of the “Disappearing Monasteries of Mount Athos and Meteora’’ at the Mayflower Hotel Sunday evening, April 13, at 8:30 o’clock. The picture will be given j under the personal direction of Capt. i Vladimir Perfilieff, former Russian, navy officer, - | This remote religious community, where no women have been allowed for j more than 1.000 years, depicts the hermit monks in their caves. The film shows the exciting ascent to a moun- j tain monastery in rope baskets, the primitive daily life with oxen and mules ; as beasts of burden, close-ups of one j of the hermits, who left his rock cave for the first time in 35 years, and j other fascinating scenes. Mrs. Charles MacVeagh is chairman of the committee sponsoring the pic- ture in Washington. She is being assisted by Senator Frederic C. Listed For Chanty, Interests New York Social Set Newest Planet of Record Is Scheduled as Pageant Ro- mance Feature Special News of Fashion World. NEW YORK, April s.—The ninth and new'est planet, which can be seen only through the most powerful of telescopes, will "personally” attend the Charity Carnival of 1930 In Madison Square Garden the evening of April 29, taking an important part in the Dageant “Ro- mance.” It already has been announced that the romance of light is to be por- trayed at the carnival, which is an out- growth of the Park Avenue Street Fair, and that Venus, Juno, Minerva and others will attend. Mrs. Arthur B. Claflin and Mrs. Ed- ward F. Hutton, honorary chairmen, and Mrs. Eugene W. Ong, executive chairman of the carnival, have an- nounced that the ninth planet will be an important member of the carnival committees and that the creation of her costume for the occasion will evoke the skill and art of the country’s most fa- mous designers. In the light episode Mrs. Wilmerding Cramer will be elec- tric light; Mrs. Edward Slade, lamp light; Mrs. Arthur French, candle light: Mrs. Robert Condon, fire light, and Mme. Bauer, moonlight. Appropriate to the theme, the song “Romance” will be sung by Rudy Val- lee, who also will sing the “Stein Song,” assisted by his Connecticut Yankees. Miss Katrinka Van C. Suydam has been chosen chairman of the debutante committee for the carnival and an- nounces as members of her committee Misses Virginia Thaw, Louise Vic- tor, Eugenia Morris. Cathleen Fox. Mr. and Mrs. William Trus- low Hyde of 1035 F’ifth avenue and Coopcrstown, N. Y.. have made known the engagement of their daughter, Miss Beati ice Hyde, to James Hilton Marr. son of Mr. and Mrs. James Marr of Quincy, Mass. Miss Hyde attended the Spence School and was graduated from Vassar in 1926. She is a member of the New York Junior League and is a sis- ter of William Truslow Hyde, jr., a sophomore at Yalo; of Miss Ann Hyde and of Mrs. Robert Johnston, jr., for- merly Miss Katherine B. Hyde. The wedding will take place July 5 at the Summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Hyde, at Cooperstown. Mrs. Jacqueline Julian, daughter es Mr. and Mrs. Rice Lewis Julian of the Hotel Webster, this city, was married a few days ago at the St. Regis to Joseph Gales Holcombe of Kingston. N. Y. ANNAPOLIS, Md. April s—Themusical clubs of the Naval Academyrepeated their entertainment this after-noon and evening. These performanceswere given in Mahan Hall. The showgiven is called "Sylphonia” and is byDavid Stretch. The midshipmen whotook the leading parts are W. L. Blatch-ford. T. W. South. R. H. Taylor, H.Sosnoski, D. W. Gladney, P. G. Wagner,L C. Brunton, J. O. P. Dorsett, J. B.Bowen and R. D. Salmon. The orches-tra, which is an excellent one, was ledby Midshipman J. M. Lewis.

Tt also was decided to hold anotherof the dances given by the youngerset or officers which have been sohighly successful. These dances areheld at Carvel Hall, and the one lastevening was, as usual, very largely at-tended.

Mrs. C. Columbus Baldwin, who hasbeen spending two weeks at the resi-dence of Mrs. Morgan Baldwin, on Col-lege avenue, left by motor Monday forNorfolk, Va., where she will be joinedby Miss Roberta Hodgers of Water-bury, near Annapolis. Mrs. Baldwin,after a few days in Norfolk, accom-panied by Miss Hodgers, will motor toCharleston, S. C. On the way homethey will stop at the Hot Springs ofVirginia and at Greensboro, N. C. Atthe latter place they will be the guestsof Mr. and Mrs. Henry du Pont Bald-win. Mrs. Columbus Baldwin will visitat Orange. N. J., before returning toher home. Spring Hill, at Waterbury.which shortly will be opened for theSummer.

Mr. C. Columbus Baldwin was theguest of his mother here for a fewdays and left on Monday for his homein New York.

Mrs. Richard Baldwin has returnedfrom a visit of two weeks in New Yorkto her apartment in Baltimore at theLatrobe, accompanied by her sister,Mrs. Joseph Lontilhon of Paris. -Mrs.Lontilhon will remain in this countryfor a short time and then will returnto France. Mrs. Baldwin will spendthe month of April iri Baltimore, re-turning to her home at Waterbury,

entertained the members of her cardclub. The occasion was the reunionof the club in honor of Mrs. Middle-ton Semmes Guest, who recently re-turned from Europe. Mrs. Bulmer returned recently froma stay of several weeks at the Hospitalfor the Women of Maryland, and ismuch improved after a severe illness.

NEW YORK, April s.—The ninth andnew'est planet, which can be seen onlythrough the most powerful of telescopes,will "personally” attend the CharityCarnival of 1930 In Madison SquareGarden the evening of April 29, takingan important part in the Dageant “Ro-mance.” It already has been announcedthat the romance of light is to be por-trayed at the carnival, which is an out-growth of the Park Avenue Street Fair,and that Venus, Juno, Minerva andothers will attend.

Mrs. Arthur B. Claflin and Mrs. Ed-ward F. Hutton, honorary chairmen,and Mrs. Eugene W. Ong, executivechairman of the carnival, have an-nounced that the ninth planet will bean important member of the carnivalcommittees and that the creation of hercostume for the occasion will evoke theskill and art of the country’s most fa-mous designers. In the light episodeMrs. Wilmerding Cramer will be elec-tric light; Mrs. Edward Slade, lamplight; Mrs. Arthur French, candle light:Mrs. Robert Condon, fire light, andMme. Bauer, moonlight.

Appropriate to the theme, the song“Romance” will be sung by Rudy Val-lee, who also will sing the “Stein Song,”assisted by his Connecticut Yankees.
