Dear parents and friends,
Congratulations to everyone for their efforts in the inter-school sports on
Wednesday. The children all tried their very best in all events. We had some
placegetters who were very proud of their ribbons. It was pleasing to see the
athletics carnival run so strictly to time this year. Congratulations to Macarthur
PS for their management of the day. A very big thank you to Miss P for her
wonderful work in preparing for the sports day. The attendance at meetings,
management of selections and organisation on the day doesn’t just happen. We
all appreciate her work. As always, I thank all the Cavendish community for their
attendance at the sports. We always bring along a large cheer squad to the
sports and it makes the children feel very special to have family and friends
cheer them along. Thank you also to the adults who assisted with setting up and
packing away our camp, providing extra supervision with the movement of the
age groups, running the long jump pits, and all the other tasks which helped
make our day run smoothly. It was great to have Kerrie Jones back with us for
the day as our first aid attendant.
The age group champions and overall school winner have just arrived today.
Congratulations to Thomas who won the age group championship medal for 5/6
year old boys, with first places in 200m, 100m and high jump. He also had a
second in long jump. Other successes for Cavendish included:
Sam P: 2nd high jump and 3rd in discus.
Emma: 1st in 100m, 200m and high jump.
Lexi: 1st in high jump
Holly L: 3rd in 100m, 200m and discus
Fletcher: 3rd in discus
Talia: 1st in shot put , 2nd in high jump, 3rd in discus.
Ruby: 1st in high jump
Heath: 3rd in 800m
Imogen: 1st in hurdles, 3rd in 800m
Cavendish relay teams finished 3rd in the 6, 7 and 9 year old shuttle.
The Cavendish team finished 1st in the 11 year old girls circular relay and 3rd in
the 10 year old girls.
Children who achieved a first in the 10/11/12 year old field events, and first or
second in 10/11/12 year old track events will qualify to participate in the
Division athletics in Warrnambool next term (Friday, 3rd May).

It was a pleasure to travel with the Year 4/6 students last Friday to Mt
Gambier for the GRIP leadership conference. They all engaged with
the activities and met other senior students from schools in South
Australia and Victoria. A very big thank you to Jill Lewis and Didi Todd
for driving pupils to the event and helping with the supervision.
We have all been thinking of Isabel this week. She, and her family,
have had to make some massive adjustments in the space of a few
days. The whole school has missed her and can’t wait to see her back
at school next week.
We have welcomed back Codi to our school this week. Codi has quick-
ly slipped into the routines of the school again after spending the first
few weeks of this term at Balmoral.
Thank you to all students for their prompt returns of MARC books this
year. The MARC system is paid for by all participating schools and the
costs of lost books can be enormous. Any unreturned books will at-
tract a fine of $15 if not found by the end of the year.
On the final day of this term, the junior council will run an Easter egg
hunt and also would invite students to wear a funky hat. There will be
a gold coin fine for this, with the proceeds going to the Royal Chil-
dren’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Don’t forget the Parents’ Club are
also organising the hot cross bun treats on this day as well.
We are now only two weeks away from the school cross country. This
will be held on the final day of term, along the usual course beside
the river. Children are asked to have their running shoes at school
each day (these can be in their school bag if they normally wear their
school shoes) so they can practice for this event. The next level
events will be on the 10th (District event - Tarrington) and 27th May
(Division event in Warrnambool).
There are still quite a few ICT Acceptable User Agreements that have-
n’t been signed and returned. These were handed out in February.
Please read through it and discuss it with your child (Years 2 to 6), to
ensure they fully understand the importance of using technology ap-
propriately and return them to school as early as possible. If you re-
quire an additional copy, please see Tammy in the office.
Reminder for students that are attending Somers Camp this year that
your application form, medical form and the payment of $260.00 are
due by Monday 1st April.
Have a great weekend,
Anthony Hill

We learnt about empathy. This means putting your-
self in other people’s shoes. There was a video show-
ing some students from a school who put themselves
in the position of refugees by only eating the food
that they get. This made them realise that your day
isn’t as bad as other peoples.
We also had to go up onto the stage to work on our
confidence with humility. This means being confi-
dent but not showing off and bragging.
We went around the room and spoke to students
from other schools to show confidence. We had to
ask questions about themselves and they had to talk
to us.
We learnt about developing ourselves to lead. The
four themes were:
Confidence with humility
Reliability
Others focused
Empathy
Leadership is about people, not about position or
power.
All the Cavendish students enjoyed this wonderful
day at the GRIP leadership conference in Mt Gam-
bier.

for our Battery Drive. This is a very easy
and great fundraiser for our school. If you

bly have batteries, please ask if they have
any and if they would like to donate some to
the school. Batteries can be left at Glenn
Barling’s workshop.

Bushfire At-Risk Register - Schools
School procedures for the bushfire season
Fire danger ratings and warnings are used in Victoria to provide clear direction on the safest options for preserving life.
Schools and children’s services listed on the DET Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR) will be closed when a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined in their Bureau of Meteorology district. Our school has been identified as being one of those at high bushfire risk and is listed on the BARR.
Where possible, we will provide parents with up to four days notice of a potential Code Red day closure by letter and/or SMS message. A Code Red day will be deter-mined by the Emergency Management Commissioner no later than 1.00 pm the day before the potential closure. Once we are advised of the confirmation of the Code Red day we will provide you with advice before the end of the school day.
Once confirmed, the decision to close will not change, regardless of im-provements in the weather forecast. This is to avoid confusion and help your family plan alternative care arrangements for your child. It is also important to note that:
No staff will be on site on days where the school is closed due to a forecast Code Red day.
Cavendish Primary School– A Rural Tradition of Excellence 23
School camps will be cancelled if a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined for the Bureau of Meteorology district in which the camp is located.
As a bus co-ordinating school all bus routes will be cancelled.
On these Code Red days, families are encouraged to enact their Bushfire Survival Plan – on such days children should never be left at home or in the care of old-er children.
For those of us living in a bushfire prone area, the CFA advise that when Code Red days are forecast, the safest option is to leave the night before or early on the morning of the Code Red day.
As part of preparing our school for potential hazards such as fire, we have updated and completed our Emergency Management Plan.
What can parents do?
Make sure your family’s bushfire survival plan is up-to-date and includes alterna-tive care arrangements in the event that our school is closed.
Ensure we have your current contact details, including your mobile phone num-bers. Keep in touch with us by reading our newsletters, by checking our website http://cavendishps.vic.edu.au/ and by talking to your child’s teacher or any other member of the teaching staff about our emergency management plan. Immediate con-tact can be made through the school’s phone number prior to any Code Red Day on (03) 55742282 or directly to the principal’s mobile on 0402526258.
Most importantly at this time of year, if you’re planning a holiday or short stay in the bush or in a coastal area, you should check warnings in advance of travel and remain vigilant during your stay.
If your child is old enough, talk to them about bushfires and your family’s bushfire survival plan.
You can access more information about children’s services closures on the Depart-ment of Education and Training website – see http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/health/pages/closures.aspx
