Whatisyourmostmemorablemomentofteaching?There’snotonespecificmoment,butit’shearingfromastudentoraresidentthatItaughtthemsomething.Forexample,IgotatextmessagefromaformerresidentafterheputinatransvenouspacemakerinapatientandherememberedthepacinglabIranandthepacingsimulatorIhadmade.Anotherresidentremindedmeofhowwedidherfirstcentrallinewhenshewasarotatingmedicalstudentinourdepartment.Whoorwhatisyourbiggestinfluence?Fromresidency,ChristopherDotyandMarkSilverbergwerebiginfluencesinhowIteachandhowIseeEmergencyMedicine.SageWeinerandRichSinertwerealsobiginfluencesonme.Theytaughtmealotandwerealwaysexcitedtodoit.IremembersittingdownonedayinresidencyafterpresentingapatientandMarkstartedtotellmywhyherniationwouldpresentwithablownpupil.AfterwardsheadvisedmetolearnafewthingsthatIcouldteachreallywellsotherewasalwayssomethingtotalkabout.Anyadviceforotherclerkshipdirectors?I’mprettynewtotheclerkshipgame,IfeellikeIshouldbetheoneaskingforadvice!ComingfromtheGMEsideofthings,it’simportanttomakesurethatstudentsknowwhatwillbeexpectedofthemasresidents.Notthemedicalknowledgestuff,butthe“adulting”stuff.Whatisyourfavoritepartaboutbeingandeducator/director?It’ssilly,butIgetreallyexcitedwhenpatientspresentwithclassicfindings.Iliketogoandfindthestudentsandresidentsandshowthem(withthepatient’spermissionofcourse!).Ialsoenjoygoingthroughproceduresatthebedside.
