A MESSAGE FROM CONNIE MACK >>
ONE MAN CANMAKE A DIFFERENCE by Connie Mack Boykin November 12, 1955 - October 10, 2013
Note from the One Man Shoot Chairmen:
Connie Mack chose to write this letter, which has opened each of our annual magazines documenting the One Man Can Make A Difference Sporting Clays Fundraiser. We believe that his story informs and inspires all of our readers to promote prostate cancer awareness, and to recognize the impact that our cooperation with the Tulane Cancer Center has on men and their families who may be facing this disease now or in the future. We are proud to again use Connie Mack’s personal message to lead off our Journal of the 2017 One Man Shoot.
In October 2008, while getting ready to go to
Canada on a goose hunt, I began to notice a pain
in my left shoulder. I thought I should go get
it checked out before the trip. The orthopedic
doctor thought it was tendonitis. To be safe and
thorough, he decided to take an X-Ray. When
he came out to give me the results, I could tell
by the look on his face that there was something
very wrong. I couldn’t believe the words that
came out of his mouth, “Mr. Boykin, I’m 99% sure
you have Stage 4 prostate cancer.”
LIFE CHANGED IMMEDIATELY.
Within three days we went through bone scans,
blood work, and an MRI. The fact was my PSA
was 769. My cancer had metastasized to the
bone, and spread to my hips, chest, and arm.
Treatment started on the fourth day as soon
onemanshoot.com 3
<< A MESSAGE FROM CONNIE MACK
as all the test results were in, beginning with
Trelstar, a hormone injection and Xgeva, a bone
strengthener. This treatment slowed the activity
of the cancer for two years, almost to the day.
Then came the treatment that everyone hates
to hear...chemo. I had 14 treatments 3 - 4 weeks
apart and their side effects were horrendous. I
lost all my hair, my finger and toenails became
deformed and fell off. I had no appetite and
everything tasted bad, even my taste for beer.
The result was a loss of 55 pounds and atrophy
of the muscles in my arms and legs. Walking
and everyday chores became tough.
The prayers and help from my wife, family,
and good friends kept me going. It might not
have been but a telephone call or a shoulder
to cry on, but it seemed that there was always
someone there to help me through the tough
times. My biggest support came from my
younger brother, Michael, who was putting
together the ONE MAN SHOOT fundraiser,
geared toward research for the cure of this
disease that affects so many men.
“The first ONE MAN SHOOT was a huge success!”
With the help of the many companies we
work with, friends, family, and others in the
community we raised over $237,000. All
of these funds went directly to research at
Tulane Cancer Center. After 14 chemotherapy
treatments the drugs stopped working and
my PSA level started to triple, meaning the
cancer was active again. Dr. Miletello, my local
oncologist, sent me to get a second opinion. The
doctor he sent me to was Dr. Sartor who just
happened to be the doctor who the ONE MAN
SHOOT was for.
Prayers are answered and I believe that the
funds raised are going to the area. The medicine
I am now taking just recently came out onto
the market in May 2011. This medication went
through tests and trials at the Tulane Cancer
Center and was prescribed to me by Dr. Sartor.
The cancer growth has slowed and I’m on the
right track. This is only one of the many drugs
that went through testing and trials under Dr.
Sartor’s direction at Tulane Cancer Center.

Did you know... About 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed with
prostate cancer during his lifetime.
Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung and colorectal cancer. About 1 man in 39 will die of prostate cancer.
 The American Cancer Society’s estimates:
• About 161,360 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in 2017
• About 26,730 men will die of prostate cancer this year
In Louisiana, approximately 2,950 men will learn they have prostate cancer this year and 370 will die of this disease.
Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men. About 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40. The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 66.
Prostate cancer can be a serious disease, but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. In fact, more than 2.9 million men in the U.S. who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.

One Man Can Make A Difference6
It is our belief that one man can make a difference when it comes to fighting prostate cancer. Whether you are a doctor, patient, relative, or friend – you can make a difference. Oliver Sartor, M.D., is one man making a difference.
All proceeds from the One Man Shoot Sporting Clays Fundraiser will be donated to Dr. Oliver Sartor’s Prostate Cancer Research Fund at Tulane Cancer Center.
Dr. Sartor has dedicated his life and focused his career on patients with advanced prostate cancer, and he is surrounded by a team of fellow oncologists, surgeons, and basic science researchers at Tulane, all working together toward the same goal – new treatment options and hopefully one day a cure for this disease.
This is why Tulane Cancer Center is the most qualified venue to receive funding specifically targeted at prostate cancer research.
Cancer...Choose to fight or surrender!
Cancer has affected the lives of many. For those it has not, just image hearing the words “you have cancer” spoken to you or a loved one. The devastation that one experiences is indescribable. But, there is hope!
We have been given hope through Tulane Cancer Center, specifically through Dr. Oliver Sartor and
his staff of research scientists at Tulane. With their experience and dedication, they extended the life of my brother, Connie Mack Boykin, and many others. Now, in memory of Connie Mack and for the benefit of ALL other men, our mission is to sponsor the research, help find a cure and afford hope to those who are affected by prostate cancer. This challenge is immediate!
In facing this challenge, we have experienced incredible encouragement and support from our families, friends and colleagues. A group stepped forward, united in arms, to push and develop a plan to take action in 2011, hosting the first Baton Rouge One Man Shoot Sporting Clays Fundraiser, in honor of my brother and yours, Connie Mack Boykin. The event was an incredible success, raising $237,000 for Dr. Sartor’s research fund. It remains one of the single largest fundraisers for prostate cancer research in Tulane’s history. What an accomplishment! This, however, only sparked the fire. In the last five years, we have raised almost $1,000,000 for prostate cancer research!
I am personally indebted to the many doctors and caregivers that have worked with my family and provided quality care and utilized the most current clinical treatments available.
I am very honored to be a part of the One Man Shoot committee. These friends have taken on the mission to help fund Dr. Sartor and his staff to develop treatments for prostate cancer and one day a cure.
My sincerest gratitude to the donors and participants in our ongoing mission to sponsor a cure.
We ask for your help now, no matter how small or large. Together, we can choose to fight, live life today and press forward to find an immediate cure for prostate cancer.
One Man Can Make A Difference! YOU can make a difference! It may be your life or the life of a loved one you save.
With Sincere Thanks,
Michael L BoykinCo-Founder and Co-Chairman, One Man Shoot
A LETTER FROM A BROTHER >>
A Letter FROM A BROTHER by MICHAEL BOYKIN
onemanshoot.com 7
There are some who would say that on October 10, 2013, our co-founder and co-chairman, Connie Mack Boykin, lost his long battle with prostate cancer.
To them we say, “Connie Mack’s battle is NOT over.”
Connie Mack’s battle was not about beating cancer for himself. It was about preventing others from having to fight the same fight. That’s why none of the funds The One Man Shoot has raised went toward Connie Mack’s medical expenses. Every penny goes directly to Tulane Cancer Center for prostate cancer research and awareness.
Those of us who knew Connie Mack would bet thatduring his first visit with the departed friends andfamily who preceded him, he was probably organizing a hunt AND soliciting help for the One Man Shoot.
By now he has probably mobilized a very powerful(winged) committee to strengthen our organizationin the fight against prostate cancer.
No… He has not lost his battle with prostate cancer…He has just gone on to recruit a different sort of help.Connie Mack was very passionate about this cause. He was also very proud of each individual on the One Man Shoot Committee, each donor, each volunteer, each shooter/participant, and the entire group at Tulane Cancer Center, where all of the cutting-edge research and development is happening day in and day out.
The One Man Shoot Committee is still very committed to this cause, but with a renewed strength and even greater passion. We truly believe now more than ever before that “One Man Can Make a Difference.” Connie Mack certainly did, and we believe he still is.
We all miss him deeply, but we take comfort in seeing a little reflection of him in each of the lives he touched and in knowing his fight goes on through us. With each shoot, each novel discovery, each new treatment method and eventually a cure we will see his battle won, and perhaps one day soon our sons and grandsons will be able to talk of prostate cancer as a thing of the past.
As we continue to wage war against prostate cancer,we ask for your continued support and we look forward to working closely with each and every one. Together, we will make a difference.

A tribute to Connie Mac Boykin:
When I think about Connie Mack Boykin, I think
about his character first. I can say he was a man of
his word, a man of conviction, and a man who never
shied away from a problem.
From the early days of meeting Connie Mack he
wanted to be better, he wanted to do better, he
wanted to make a difference, and he wanted to
make it enjoyable for everyone around him. It’s
no wonder he was thinking of others at his time
of illness with prostate cancer and he wanted to
make it better for others so they wouldn’t have to
encounter the same.
Connie Mack was passionate about everything he
did. In business from the first visits with him, he
wanted to meet all of the folks in the industry and
was intent on learning more about his customers,
prospects, and his industry. He wanted to bond
with all the folks and he did exactly that over the
years. In his personal life he was passionate about
relationships and wanted to make things better for
all. In his prayer life he was seeking his next move in
heaven. He was always planning, but more
importantly he was always loving. It was my
pleasure to have met that unique guy, Connie Mack.
I miss you and will forever be thankful for having met
you and for making a difference in my life.
Now let’s continue what Connie Mack started and
find a cure.
Sincerely,
Tommy Indest

Meet Oliver Sartor, M.D.Dr. Oliver Sartor is the C.E. and Bernadine Laborde Professor of Cancer Research in the Departments of Medicine and Urology at Tulane University School of Medicine. He was also recently appointed as Assistant Dean for Oncology. He is a world-renowned prostate cancer expert and one of the few medical oncologists in the world to focus on prostate cancer. Combining basic, translational and clinical prostate cancer research and ensuring state-of-the-art clinical treatment have been the major areas of focus throughout his career.
Funds raised through the One Man Shoot will be used to support Dr. Sartor’s ongoing research initiatives and Tulane’s Prostate Cancer Research Program.
TULANE’S PROSTATE CANCER PROGRAMIS UNPARALLELED
Dr. Sartor is the leader of Tulane’s Prostate Cancer Research Program, a world-class team of cancer professionals performing cutting-edge basic and clinical research and running the largest treatment center for prostate cancer patients in Louisiana. Thousands of prostate cancer patients are treated in Tulane’s clinics each year. In addition to patients from Louisiana, Tulane has cancer patient referrals from 26 additional states and five countries outside the United States.
Tulane is also at the cutting-edge of groundbreaking basic and clinical research into prostate cancer. Between 2010- 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved six new drugs for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. Dr. Oliver Sartor played a lead role in the development of two of these drugs and served in an advisory role for two others. This is unprecedented progress, as these are the first new treatment options offering hope for men with advanced disease since 2004, and Tulane’s prostate program contributed to their development. Our goals, of course, are to be even better tomorrow and to continue to build our program. With your help, we are able to do just that.
THE COMPLETE SPECTRUM OF PROSTATECANCER RESEARCH AND CARE
Tulane Cancer Center provides cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation with an emphasis on convenience for our patients and their families and with a team approach to comprehensive prostate cancer care. Our world-class program spans the full spectrum of prostate cancer care - from basic and clinical research to cancer screening and prevention to early detection and diagnosis to the latest treatment options and rehabilitation. Working alongside Dr. Sartor, Tulane’s Prostate Cancer Team includes other world-class clinicians, plus laboratory scientists who study cancer at the molecular level. The ultimate goal is to explore new avenues in the hopes of better understanding cancer and how to cure it.

RESEARCH GRANT FUNDING AND PUBLICATION IN PRESTIGIOUS MEDICAL JOURNALS
The answer to curing prostate cancer is research and clinical trials. Tulane Cancer Center’s prostate cancer faculty have successfully competed for millions in federal and other research funding in recent months. This is particularly impressive, considering lower federal research budgets and greatly increased competition for these dollars across the United States.
Additionally, Dr. Sartor and his colleagues have had the results of their research published in a number of prestigious, high-impact medical journals. Publication often involves a rigorous peer-review process and once again indicates the importance of their work.
Since January 1, 2016, Dr. Sartor has had approximately 34 manuscripts published in journals such as Lancet Oncology, The New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association and Nature Reviews Urology. For a complete list of Dr. Sartor’s publications, please visit www.pubmed.gov and enter Sartor O (or Sartor AO) in the search bar.
CLINICAL TRIALS LEAD TO NEW TREATMENT OPTIONS
Tulane offers a variety of clinical research trials for the treatment of prostate cancer. Dr. Sartor was North-American principal investigator on the pivotal phase Ill clinical trial that recently led to expedited Food and Drug Administration approval of the new drug radium-223 for the treatment of some men with symptomatic, bone-metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer. He has also played key roles in the development of three other prostate cancer drugs receiving FDA approval in the last few years.
EARLY DETECTION & COMPLIMENTARYCANCER SCREENINGS
When cancer is found early, it is more successfully treated. The Tulane Cancer Center offers complimentary prostate cancer screenings on the second Tuesday of each month. Participants are asked to complete a brief questionnaire regarding family history and provide a blood sample. To make an appointment for a complimentary screening, please call 504-988-5800 or 1-800-588-5800.
EMOTIONAL & FAMILY SUPPORT
The Patricia Trost Friedler Center for Psychosocial Oncology at Tulane Cancer Center offers psychological, emotional, and educational support for our prostate cancer patients and their family members through a number of services, including individual and family counseling, a variety of support groups, wellness workshops, and a resource library.
Tulane’s Department of Urology also hosts bi-monthly Prostate Cancer Support Group meetings featuring guest speakers who address topics of interest to prostate cancer patients and their families. Support groups provide an opportunity for patients to share knowledge and experiences. For more information, please contact the Department of Urology at504-988-2750.
“The last year has been one of considerable progress and effort, with a multiplicity of clinical trials as well as basic research projects that are beginning to show progress in a meaningful way. We are aware that any progress that we make is never fast enough, though, because unfortunately prostate cancer is a disease that has a high mortality rate when not diagnosed in a timely fashion. Too many men continue to die from this disease, and more work is needed, urgently, to diminish the risks associated with this diagnosis. Because of the generosity and support of the One Man Shoot Planning Committee members, as well as the shooters, sponsors, in-kind donors, volunteers and all others involved in this event, we continue to work on early diagnosis and staging; we continue to pursue both national and international endeavors; we continue to run a strong team here at Tulane that functions in a collaborative yet independent manner; we continue to publish aggressively, and we continue to offer our patients the best technology and best decision-making possible when it comes to their prostate cancer care. We are proud of your partnership in all of these efforts, and we are deeply grateful, as always, for your invaluable support.”
- Oliver Sartor, M.D.
