HELP FOR SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER
CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stutter-ing. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the
67-year-old nonprofit Stut-tering Foundation is avail-able free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Moe & JackMeet Moe and Jack, two sweet and closely bonded brothers....where there’s one of them you are sure to find the other! Both kitties are mostly white with
some grey tiger markings on their heads —Jack has a cute little
black smudge on his nose— and he respectfully request that you don’t try to “wash” it off. Moe
and Jack are loving little angels that want to sleep near their humans or any other animal in the house. They are very cat friendly and also
enjoy dogs. Moe and Jack were trapped as part of a TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) program at a barn in Stillwater with many of their extended family — they were the only ones young enough and friendly enough
to transition into happy pets. Moe and Jack can be timid when you first meet them but warm up into the most snuggly little guys. Moe and Jack can be adopted separately but they are very dependent on each other and it would be great if they found a home together. Are you and your family ready to give these boys their happy ending? Moe and Jack are 4 months old (as of 2/25/2015), neutered, up to date on his shots and
have tested negative for FIV and FeLV.

Queenie
Champ
Beetlejuice
Champ was in a very bad neigh-borhood in Georgia and was in a bidding war as a bait dog. Our
rescue stepped in and got the high bid. This boy would have had a horrible fate. He is now safe at
Save-A-Stray. He has been vetted, given shots and wormed.
Meet Queenie, This beautiful orange tabby is the sweetest little
thing. She is up to date on vaccine, including rabies and spayed. She would love to have a home of her own as she was taken in as a stray and is very grateful to have lots of
food and soft blankets to lay on. She would be a great addition to any
family. Please come and meet her.
This boy was at a high kill shelter and he had less the 24 hours before
he was to be euthanized. He is now safe and been given shot, vet
checked, wormed and ready for his new life.

AVOID CAR-SELLING SCAMS
(NAPS)—The Internet makes it easy to shop for the best bargain on a used car—just remember, an offer that seems “too good to be true” probably is.
It may come from someone known as a “curbstoner.” These are illegal dealers who pose as individual sellers online and mostly deal with cars that reputable dealers won’t touch.
You may see cheap prices but the cars generally have major problems you’re not told about, such as flood damage, bad accidents or odometer problems. Some may even have a different Vehicle Identification Num-ber (VIN), a trick used by thieves to hide the true iden-tity of stolen cars.
Look for:
1. Strange marks or scratches on the dashboard VIN plate or sticker inside the driver’s side door.
2. Any car documents where the VIN looks altered.
3. Multiple VINs on different pieces of paperwork.
4. The seller’s name not ap-pearing on car title or regis-tration.
What to do: Shop online at a place like carfax.com. Every car for sale there comes with a free Carfax Vehicle History Report. Also have a trusted mechanic inspect the ve-hicle and always see the car in person.
Beware of buying a used car online, sight unseen. You may get one with severe damage from floods, accidents and the like.

SLAM DUNK SPECIALS After being cooped up for so many months, we’re all anxious to get outside and clean up our yards and get on with gardening projects. Even though it is still very cool, there’s a lot that can get planted right away. Fruit trees, rose bushes and even hardy flower bulbs like lilies can be planted now even though freezing temperatures and even another snowstorm (I know, I know) are still a possibility. These plants are hardy and are perfectly capable of enduring through the vagaries of early spring weather. In fact, it is actually better to get hardy plants in the ground as early as possible so they can take advantage of cool soil to grow a strong root system. Of course we’ll want to wait another month and a half before we start planting tender bulbs like dahlias and such. If you’re unsure about what you can plant right now, just drop by your local garden center and they’ll be happy to fill you in. Planting seems simple enough but, through all my years of garden retailing, I’ve noticed that most plant deaths are not caused by bugs or lack of water but ignoring “proper planting depth”. Planting depth refers to how deeply the plant is set into the soil. Most folks do a great job preparing the soil using peat moss, bone meal, and other additives to insure survival and growth. The BIG MISTAKE PART 1 usually occurs at the final stage of the planting process. If, for instance, you’re planting a tree, you’ll dig the hole only as deep as the ball or pot that contains the roots. At the bottom of the hole you’ll blend an equal amount of peat moss with the original soil. For an average sized tree or shrub, you’ll want to add about a cup or so of bone meal into this blend. The soil at the bottom of the hole should be very loose since you’ve been mixing it. Next, (and this is where the BIG MISTAKE PART 1 occurs), you should place the tree into the hole and check for PROPER PLANTING DEPTH. The spot where the trunk of the tree meets the soil of its ball or pot should exactly match the level of the soil around your planting hole. In other words, the plant’s stem or trunk should NOT be sunk below the level of the surrounding area. The easiest way to check this is to lay a stick (the handle of your shovel is handy) across the planting hole and make sure that the top of the root ball is level with the ground. If the plant is too low, remove it from the hole and add soil to the bottom to raise it up until you get it at the proper level. This seems trivial but it can make all the difference to the plants’ health and survival. Once you’ve made sure that the crown of the plant (the dividing line on the plant between what is above the ground and what is below) is at the proper level, fill in the rest of the planting hole. You can add more peat moss and bone meal around the sides of the root ball but make sure that the top 1/4 of the hole is filled in with just the original soil with no peat moss added. Peat moss improves the soil’s ability to retain moisture. When added to the surface, peat moss will dry out and, in a wick-like manner, draw moisture from below the plant, drying it out. This is the point where inexperienced gardeners make the BIG MISTAKE PART 2. When you dig a hole then fill it with a large root ball, there’s going to be soil left over. What do we do with it? At this point many will opt to pile it up around the trunk or stem. I guess it looks cozy; like tucking the plant in or something. I really don’t know why it’s done. The point is: DON’T DO IT! It will have the same negative effect as planting too deeply. If the stem or trunk above ground is covered with soil, it hinders the plant’s ability to pass moisture and nutrients from the root system to the branches and leaves above. Use the extra soil to build a dish-shaped dike or berm out away from the stem of the plant. This will collect water and direct it down to the root system below. The importance of maintaining proper planting depth extends to 99% of planting situations. There are rare exceptions (like tomatoes) but it is a rule that is best obeyed. From maple trees to marigolds and even your houseplants. You should also take care when applying bark and other mulches not to pile them up against the stems and trunks of plants. I’m always (sadly) amazed when I see trees with bark mulch piled in a volcano shaped mound around the trunks of trees. Remember: roots is roots and stems is stems. Bury the roots but let the stems be free to breathe. Thanks for the read.
