This year’s theme, “We Are the BSBPA”, celebrates our diverse membership. With the support of its members, the BSBPA sponsors events and activities that bring people to Ballston Spa, promotes local businesses and organiza-tions and helps beautify and enhance the downtown village through gar-dens, plantings, directory signs and more. Our Annual Meeting and Mixer is an opportunity to review accomplishments, honor our outgoing board members and welcome our new ones, as well as look forward to the up-coming year. The evening will begin with a social hour and buffet at 6 pm, followed by the official meeting at 7 pm. Tickets are $20 per person and are available online at www.ballston.org. FAITH BAPTIST CHURCH LENTEN LUNCHEONS
REXFORD - On Wednesday, March 5th, at 12 noon, the first of seven Lenten Luncheons will take place. These luncheons are spon-sored by the Faith Baptist Church, 11 Glen-
ridge Road in Rexford. The public is encouraged to attend these luncheons which will continue weekly, each Wednes-day until March 27th. Lunch is served at noon, with a sug-gested donation for the meal, with a special speaker each week. People with special dietary needs please feel free to bring your lunch and join others at the table for fellowship and the message. Please reserve your table space, however. SARATOGA SPRINGS - Wine Tasting, Cooking Demon-strations, and Day for Kids Among Features. The Sara-toga Home & Lifestyle Show, an annual community event organized by the Saratoga Springs Rotary Club, will take place February 28-March 2, 2014, at the Saratoga Springs City Center. The show will feature approximately 120 exhibitors, with a wide range of home improvement, out-door living and landscap-ing, family recreation, and lifestyle products and ser-vices, as well as great prizes, including the grand prize of a 50-inch flat-screen TV. Funds raised from the show support the Rotary Club’s donations to community charities and youth schol-arships. The Home Show hours at the City Center will be Friday, February 28 from 5-9 p.m.; Saturday, March 1 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $1 for kids 5-12, under 5 free. CREEK MITIGATION TO HIGHLIGHT FRIENDS OF KAYADEROSSERAS ANNUAL MEETING
SARATOGA SPRINGS - Want to know more about different ways to keep watersheds like the Kayaderosseras Creek robust and healthy, both as a natural and a community resource? If so, the Friends of the Kayaderosseras invites you to their annual meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3 at the Gideon Putnam Room in the State Administration Building in the Saratoga State Park. Guest speaker will be Doug Heller, a professional engineer who specializes in stream bank stabilization, natural stream design, stormwater management and site development. Doug, a project engineer at the LA Group in Saratoga Springs, designed several mitigation proj-ects this past summer for the Kayaderosseras Creek, the major ones being along Creek Road and Route 29 west of Rock City Falls. Other highlights of the meeting include a discussion by Maria Trabka, executive director of Saratoga PLAN (Preserving Land and Nature) of new natural resource maps produced by PLAN which will be posted and George Preston, Friends of the Kayaderosseras, who will show photos taken over several years at the same spot on the Kayaderosseras Creek documenting changes. Friends of the Kayaderosseras President John Battenfield will ask for suggestions and lead discussions on how FoK can better conserve, preserve and protect the creek. Officers to fulfill expired terms will also be nominated for an election. The annual “Cow” and “Silver Sword” awards will also be presented to members who have performed above and beyond the call of duty. Free refreshments and snacks will also be available at the meeting.

BALLSTON SPA - The Sarato-ga County Historical Society announced the new exhibit The Creative Mind, featuring the work of Karin Vollkom-mer, will open March 7th and run through April 25th. A free reception will be held during Ballston Spa’s First Friday Celebration at Brook-side starting at 5pm. Karin Vollkommer started painting in 1976. After selling a very large miniature-painting fridge magnet business, she began to paint larger prints and collages. “When I started to paint again, my style and taste had changed,” says Vollkommer. After com-pleting a special collage cover commemorating the 75th birthday of Saratoga Springs, she opened anoth-er business, “Vintage Day-dreams.” Twenty years later, the evolution of this busi-ness has resulted in over fi fty prints from Karin Vollkom-mer’s original paintings that are now in print. During the opening reception on Friday the 7th, Vollkommer will be reading stories about her characters at 6pm, and again at 7pm in celebration of First Friday’s literature theme. She will also be demonstrat-ing needle felting. Her nos-talgic and locally inspired work will be on display at Brookside from Friday, March 7 through Friday, April 25. NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC offers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have got-ten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned in-come falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depend-ing on your filing status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple filing jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefit. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and filing requirements must be met. You must file a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to file. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. LONGEST ROADS IN NORTH AMERICARoad trips are popular all year long, and driving the same roads during various seasons can yield entirely diff erent views along the way. Many scenic highways can take travelers across the country, and for those drivers interested in traveling the longest roads in North America, there are two op-tions at the ready. At 4,990 miles (8,030 kilo-
meters), the Trans-Canada Highway is the longest road-way in North America. It is a federal-provincial highway system that travels through all 10 provinces of Canada be-tween the Atlantic and Pacifi c Oceans. A person can travel all the way from Newfoundland to British Columbia on the highway. The system was ap-proved in 1949 and the high-way offi cially opened in 1962. Drivers on the highway will easily recognize the green-and-white maple leaf route markers.
Drivers south of the Canadian border can travel along U.S. Route 20. Spanning 3,365 miles (5,415 kilometers), Route 20 is an east-west highway and the longest road in the United States. In the east, Route 20 terminates in Bos-ton, Mass. In the west, it ends at Newport, Ore. The “0” in the route’s number indicates it is a coast-to-coast route. Route 20 travels through Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska,
Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts. Although the length of U.S. Route 6 was shortened when California renumbered its highways in 1964 and a portion of the route was transferred to another highway, the road is the longest continuous roadway in the United States. It is not considered a major transcontinental route because Route 6 was gradually put together from other routes over time. But it still can get drivers from Massachusetts to California.

As we wait for our world to thaw, I’d like to take some space to refl ect on a couple of people that made contributions to the world of agriculture. These two men developed insights into the world of plants and products that could be produced from plants that borders on mystical. One was born at the end of the Civil War and overcame great hardship to become a respected agricultural chemist. The other was relatively uneducated and yet managed to introduce over 800 new plant varieties during his lifetime; a feat that has yet to be outdone. The two men are George Washington Carver and Luther Burbank.
George Washington Carver was born of slave parents in 1864 or 1865 in Missouri on the Moses Carver plantation. Like most slave children of the time, he took the name of his parent’s owner. His father is believed to have been a slave at a neighboring farm although not much is known of him. Baby George and his mother were kidnapped by raiders from the south and although Moses Carver managed to locate baby George after the war was over (Moses Carver had to trade a racehorse to gain his release), his mother was never located and he never saw her again.
Although not technically a slave, George remained at the Carver plantation as a boy. He was sick upon his return and was kept from hard labor. Instead, he cooked, sewed and tended the plantation’s gardens (which he loved best of all). It is said that he also wandered the woods “talking to the fl ow-ers” and collecting them. He even earned a reputation at this young age as a “plant doctor” often consulting with neighbors about plant problems they were having. During this time he also managed to teach himself to read and developed a strong desire to get an education; not the easiest thing for a black child in those days. At the tender age of 10, George left the Carver plantation to make his way in the world on his own. While he was earning his high school diploma, he supported himself by working as a farmhand, cook and in a laundry. He applied to Highland University but was refused admission when it was learned he was black. Finally, he was admitted to Simpson College in 1890. By this time Carver was about 30 years old. There were no science courses at Simpson so he studied piano and painting. An instructor there recognized Carver’s horticultural talent and encouraged him to pursue that rather than the arts. He took her advice to heart and was admitted in 1891 to the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now known as Iowa State University). Here, George Washington Carver blossomed into a true renaissance man. He was a leader in the YMCA. He was captain of the debate club and the campus military regiment. The school newspaper published his poetry and he even had two of his paintings exhibited at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. In spite of his excellence in the arts, Carver’s horticultural prowess allowed him to remain at the college as a graduate student. His insights and innovations with plant breeding led to his appointment to the faculty; another fi rst at Iowa State College. In 1896, George Washington Carver, after publishing several papers on his work, completed his master’s degree.
It was at this point that Booker T. Washington invited Carver to join the faculty of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. It was here that all his training and intuition would revolutionize and revitalize agriculture in the south. For many generations farmers in the south had grown cotton. The soil was depleted and cotton was no longer a viable crop. Carver devised a method of crop rotation where a legume crop (such as peanuts) would be planted every other year to replenish nitrogen and minerals in the soil. This method was quite successful but soon there was a surplus of peanuts. Undaunted, Carver the chemist went to work to see what products could be developed from peanuts to make them a more valuable commodity. I guess you could say he succeeded. He managed to develop 325 prod-ucts from peanuts and their shells. Products that range from nitroglycerine to hand lotion to animal feed to linoleum. So successful was he that soon farmers in the south were making more money on peanuts than on “king cotton”. While his remarkable development of peanut products is what Carver is best known for, it is just the tip of the iceberg. He introduced over 100 products from sweet pota-toes and many hundreds of products from many other plants and even products derived from clay.
While all these accomplishments are astounding to the point of being almost unbelievable, it is the philosophy of this great scholar that is the most endearing. Fame and wealth were of no importance to him at all. “God did not charge me or you for making peanuts. Why should I profi t from their products?” He stated. His goal was to use his knowledge for the betterment of all and he encour-aged his students to adopt the same attitude. He strove to make benefi cial products from the common things that could be found near at hand. He advanced chemistry and agricultural as none before had. Although he was born out of slavery he was, in great part, responsible for the resurrection of southern agriculture.
To be sure, Carver’s intellect and education enabled him to successfully develop the various prod-ucts from the plants he found around the south. But, there’s more to it than pure science. His ability to understand the potential of a plant was uncanny and puzzled scientists. Carver contended that God and the plants themselves communicated with him. He was known to arise before dawn and wander the woods about Tuskegee just as he had the woods of Missouri in his childhood. It was during these pre-dawn treks that he gained inspiration. “Nature is the greatest teacher and I learn from her best when the others are asleep. In the still hours before sunrise God tells me of the plans I am to fulfi ll.” was his honest explanation. Considering his genius and the results of his labor, it’s hard to dispute his beliefs as unbelievable as they sound. He was an American genius and overcame hardship and prejudice to fulfi ll what he considered his sacred mission on behalf of humanity. We owe him much. Next week: the amazing Luther Burbank. SARATOGA CO. - Saratoga County RPC, through its VetHelp division, is pleased to announce the start of a new program to aid veterans and their families in their struggle to main-tain permanent housing. The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program can provide monetary relief as well as extensive case management for veteran families that are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Tem-porary fi nancial assistance is available for rental assistance, utilities fees, security deposit, moving costs, emergency sup-plies, child care and transportation. Case management and referral services include health care, daily living activities, fi nancial planning, transportation, income support and le-gal assistance. The goal of the SSVF program is to promote housing stability among very low income Veteran families who reside in or are transitioning to permanent housing in the following New York State counties; Washington, War-ren, Saratoga, Schenectady, Montgomery, Fulton and Schoharie. Coordinating Efforts To Build Stronger Riverfront Communities
These days, local business and government leaders are putting in a lot of effort to ensure that the Tech Val-ley revolution positively impacts all southern Saratoga communities, not just a few along the Northway. To do things right, we can’t just create copycat versions of what’s successful in Malta, Clifton Park or Saratoga Springs. The correct approach is to take stock of com-munity assets in Halfmoon, Mechanicville, Stillwater, Schuylerville, and Waterford and tailor economic and community development efforts towards augmenting those resources already in place. This may seem coun-terintuitive in an age where regionalism is considered key to effecting robust, coordinated economic change. There is a strong case to be made, however, that not only is the micro approach complimentary to the larger, regional efforts but that it is a vital, and heretofore missing, component. Our River towns have things going for them that you won’t find elsewhere. The canal, for one. Nearby railroads are another. They have history, be it maritime, industrial, and of course the American Revolution. They have a strong ethnic heritage, filled with descendants of immigrants who came here to build our in-frastructure and work in our factories. These localities, so important in the history of manufacturing and transportation in our state, are also capable of potentially pivotal roles in its future. With changes in population trends, the cost of energy,
food distribution needs and preferences, and infrastructure repair and capacity challenges, our waterways and rails have significant ability to pick up the slack. Finally, nearby adjacent properties are still available to house modern-ized, 21st century factories and warehouses. We held something special last week called a Riverside Chat, an informal group discussion that brought local busi-ness and community leaders to Mechanicville with an eye towards collaborative community development. More will follow - it will be a lengthy effort, but a worthwhile and re-warding one.
