*An exterior remodel project part of the Safeway re-imaging program, our company was hired to come up with conceptual redesigns of the exterior of the store and site. The illustration below shows one of the proposed storefront redesigns. This design updates the existing outdated storefront, with a more robust massing that is common with newer Safeway stores. The site plan redesign accommodates a new fuel center and shops building. Parking data was tabulated to accompany the proposed site plan redesign.

As a senior drafter I was not only responsible for recreating the sketches in AutoCad, I needed to be aware of existing building and site conditions that could affect the proposed designs. Site survey data was continually checked against the existing and proposed drawings. Under the guidance of our project manager, I was responsible for coming up with conceptual redesigns of the site plan. The reconfiguration included the proposed fuel center and shops building along with a new ADA compliant public access sidewalk and new planters.

Zero-Energy Rest Area studio projects
OVERVIEW
The proposed structure will be located at the Utah Salt Flats on the North side of I-80. The program calls for a 20,000 sf. zero energy rest area that engages a proposed land art installation. The program is also to include 5000 sf. of space dedicated toward the “experience of place”, 1500 sf. for a cafe and (24) 400 sf. rooms for lodging.

Obtaining Curvature through Segmentation:
Segmenting material to create curvature allows free movement of material without the stressing or deformation. Looking at the Armadillidiiae family of Woodlouse, commonly refered to as Pill Bug or Sow Bug, we see how this segmentation allows for a seemingly smooth surface while allowing movement in muliple directions.
The concept behind the furniture is to create a space for relaxtion and contemplation. The space allows the user to temporarily disengage themselves from the public while not fully embracing total isolation.

The Los Angeles community of Boyle Heights is an intriguing community that is defined by cultural pride, family and community involvement It faces issues associated with gangs, violence and theft, but manages to persevere no matter the negative statistic. When I walked the streets of Boyle Heights, I did not feel I was walking through an area stricken by violence; rather, I understood that this was a neighborhood that was very much defined by a working class people. The sound of children at play, filled the many playgrounds. I am not one that is naive, and understand that this neighborhood has its problems like any other neighborhood in a major city. But, what makes this neighborhood unique is its involvement with its young community. It appears the Boyle Heights neighborhood is correcting some of the wrongs of the years past, when stories of violence dominated the conversation of the community. They seem to understand that by engaging your youth, it helps keep them off the streets when they become teenagers and young adults. After speaking with some of the long time residents of the area, it is to my understanding that this neighborhood would greatly benefit from architectural spaces devoted to celebrating the culture and engaging all members of this very family oriented Hispanic community. Preserving, celebrating and respecting the culture and history of Boyle Heights would need to be the main goal of anyone designing within the community. Boyle Heights has the benefit of having many generations of people who are invested in preserving the goodness and quality of a historic Los Angles neighborhood.

CONCEPT
The project will provide an atmosphere that promotes the safety, health and well being of the community. Grocery, Recreation, and Medical facilities will be introduced as three separate programs that will be interconnected to one another, to allow for seamless, unimpeded movement. Each space, or zone, will provide adequate natural lighting and ventilation. The ground level, should additionally provide a level of transparency and visibility that will allow for unimpeded foot traffic from the surrounding neighborhoods. The promotion of transparent, “open” spaces, will also aid in the concerns for safety. Dark and hidden spaces should be clearly avoided, as this is a concern for safety and undermines the ideas regarding lighting and ventilation.

CONCEPT
Each programmed space has a varying levels of transparency. The Market and central atrium space has the greatest permeability. Individuals move about freely from the street into the space. The spaces are also naturally ventilated. A louvered system on the east end of the building blocks direct solar exposure, but allows the prevailing winds to pass through the building. The Fitness spaces are semi-public and celebrate a visual transparancy by placing the users on display. Unlike the market and main atrium space, movement into the facility is controlled. Access to the medical spaces are the most controlled. The waiting room receives the greatest connection to the other programs due to its “public” use. The medical offices within the suites have access southern views of the Boyle Heights residential neighborhood. The horizontal louver system is again used on the south facade of the building. This allows reduced southern solar exposure to the medical offices while supplying quality natural lighting and views.

CONCEPT
The Market (ground) level is open to Whitier Boulevard, allowing unimpeded movement from the street to the first floor. Many commercial spaces along Whittier are recognized by their pedestran scaled entrances and facades. In order to maintain this scale in the Wellness Center, the ground level ceiling height (not counting the atrium) is 10’-0”. The lower ceiling heights contributes to maintaining a more intimate atmosphere within the market.

Primary Structure:
A rigid frame is used to provide adequate lateral support . The frame is shaped to reduce deflection and internal bending moments in the beam. Forces are carried vertically through the “columns” and through the pin connection.
T
The joint between beam and column is thickened to reduce bending moment. The rotational moment that is reduced at the joint is translated to the end conditions of the beam - the pins.
For the primary structure, a rigid frame is used to provide adequate lateral support . The frame is shaped to reduce deflection and internal bending moments in the beam. Forces are carried vertically through the “columns” and through the pin connection. Steel cross bracing is utilized every other bay. The bracing resist lateral loads along the longitudinal section of the building. Tension bracing is used because the bracing members are smaller and lighter than typical rigid cross bracing. The subgrade level is supported by a bearing wall at the perimeter of the building and a series of concrete columns that support the load of the floor and the primary structure above.

Skin:
The exterior roof and facade is composed of aluminum sheets. The material was chosen due to its relatively light weight and ability to easily conform to the shapes needed for the structure.

INTEGRATED SYSTEMS
Natural ventilation is a primary design element within the facility. The horizontal louver system reduces the direct solar exposure in the atrium space while allowing the prevailing winds to pass freely through the building. The air conditioning load is greatly reduced by allowing the large atrium space and the market space to remain unconditioned. The facility will provide adequate lighting, while utilizing diffused natural lighting whenever possible (see inset).
