Feast of the Ascension, Sunday May 17, 2020

Dear Parishioners, �

Pope Benedict in the book Jesus of Naza-

reth gives a very profound reflec&on on the As-

cension of Jesus. He wants us to understand

what it means when we say Jesus took his

“place at the rights hand of God.” It does not

refer to some distant cosmic place, or some

distant star, as we would imagine. It is not a

space along side other spaces. In rela&on to

space God is Lord and Creator. His presence is

not special, but divine. “Si4ng at God’s right

hand” then means that Jesus par&cipates in the

divine dominion over space. The Old Testa-

ment is filled with images of God’s Throne.

But it is not a throne as we would imagine it,

rather it is a symbol of power. In this way he re

�enters into our human dimensions. That is

why he say “I am going away but I will come

back to you.” Jesus does this at the same &me.

He comes to us in a new form of closeness, of a

con&nual presence...�

“Thus Jesus himself is what we call

"heaven"; heaven is not a place but a person,

the person of him in whom God and man are

forever and inseparably one.� And we go to

heaven and enter into heaven to the extent

that we go to Jesus Christ and�enter�into him.� In this sense, "ascension into heaven" can be

something that takes place in our everyday lives…�

For the disciples, the "ascension" was not what we usually misinterpret it as being: the tem-

porary absence of Christ from the world.� It meant rather his new, defini&ve, and irrevocable

presence by par&cipa&on in God's royal power... God has a place for us!… In God there is a

place for us!…"Be consoled, flesh and blood, for in Christ you have taken possession of heav-

en and of God's kingdom!" (Tertullian). “�

Holy the Rosary, St. pope John Paul said, “ Here is the remedy against this

evil. Pray, pray and ask for nothing else. Put everything in the hands of the

Mother of God….. We must be prepared to undergo great trials in the not-too-

distant future; trials that will require us to be ready to give up even our lives,

and a total gift of self to Christ and for Christ. Through your prayers and

mine, it is possible to alleviate this tribulation, but it is no longer possible to avert

it, because it is only in this way that the Church can be effectively renewed. How

many times, indeed, has the renewal of the Church been effected in blood? This

time, again, it will not be otherwise. We must be strong, we must prepare our-

selves, we must entrust ourselves to Christ and to His holy Mother, and we must

be attentive, very attentive, to the prayer of the Rosary. �

Come Holy Spirit, comfort the sick and infected.

Protect the elderly and the handicapped in

nursing homes and developmental centers.

Keep us from anxiety and panic and enable us to

work together to combat his a virus that has

come upon us as a thief in the night.

Banish this virus and throw it into the pit of hell

so that we may once again

serve the Lord with Joy and peace. Amen.
