Community Design Challenge Our school was abuzz last Thursday morning as parents and grandparents assisted students to design and build a newspaper table that could support 1 kilogram. The engineering skills of our teams greatly surpassed the design brief and by the end of the challenge, we had 14 teams who succeeded in designing tables which supported 9 kilograms. I would like to extend a warm thank you to all of our community members who participated in the challenge; the atmosphere was charged with excitement, industry and engagement as teams worked towards achieving their goal. This is the second year that we have run a community design challenge and it will certainly become a feature of future school years. Upon announcing our 14 winning teams, I set them the challenge of experimenting with how much weight their bridges could hold. At this point, we have had a number of bridges that have supported family members – a great design effort!

Learning Expo: Last Wednesday’s Learning Expo was also a great success and I would like to thank all of our students and teachers for the effort they put into the event. It was great to see our students have an audience for their work and for our parents to see the work being produced by other year level. We received lots of great feedback on the event and we will certainly look to repeat the event at a future time.

Athletics Carnival We are now just a week away from our Athletics Carnival which is always one of the highlights on our sporting calendar. Staging our athletics carnival requires an enormous amount of parent support and over the years we have been very well supported by our parent community. At this point in proceedings, we still require a significant amount of parent helpers. If you can help out on the day, please complete the reply slip in this week’s newsletter. Many thanks to the parents who have already volunteered their time. Head Lice Check Head lice are a perennial issue in all schools and as part of our control efforts we will be holding a head lice check next week. Over the coming days, could parents please inspect their children for the presence of head lice and treat the lice if detected. I will confirm the exact date of the check early next week via email. Grade 3/4 Camp Our Grade 3/4 students have settled in well to their camp at 15 Mile Creek Outdoor School and Mrs Evans and Mrs Tobin have informed me that all of our students have been having a wonderful time. Tomorrow I will join the group for the last two days of the camp and I am looking forward immensely to hearing all of the excited recounts of the camp highlights. Students will return at approximately 2pm on Friday, no doubt with tired but happy faces! NAPLAN Student Results On Monday, we will be sending home the NAPLAN reports for our Grade 3 and Grade 5 students. While NAPLAN always generates a significant amount of public debate, and this year has been no exception, it provides a very useful “point in time” picture of a student’s achievement. In addition to NAPLAN data, our school hold a comprehensive data profile for every child and we are always happy to discuss your child’s learning with you if you wish to place the NAPLAN report in a broader context. Avenel Heritage History Project One of our local community members, Jen Arnold, is currently co-ordinating a local history project which aims to record the history of Avenel on a number of storyboards to be placed around our community. Later in the year, our school will be supporting Jen with this exciting project. If you have a story to share or would like to assist in any way, Jen’s details can be found elsewhere in the newsletter. All the best, Neil

COMMUNITY CORNER

Avenel has been fortunate that its’ application to be considered for funding to complete Stage 2 of our Skatepark (Avenel Multi use Youth Activity Precinct) has been successful. For our project to receive the funding it needs – Avenel residents 16 + YO and anyone living within 50 kms of Avenel can vote for our project.

If each eligible Avenel resident gets 4 others to vote - this will go a long way towards getting sufficient votes for our project to be funded. To vote you need to do the following - Register at the pickmyproject.vic.gov.au website - Complete the required questions – should take 2-3 mins - Projects in our region will be displayed - Choose the Avenel Multi Use Youth Activity Precinct and 2 others from our region (Goulburn) – you have to list 3. (We suggest Nagambie Toddlers “Build it and they will come again and again” as number 2 and one other of your choosing.) - Submit your vote when asked to do so. Thank you for helping to see a project for our young ones come to fruition if we are successful in gaining funding Avenel Action Group

Sacrament at St. Joseph’s

Dear families, If you have any children who would like to make the Sacrament of Confirmation, then the following will apply to you. This is for children who have been baptized and who have previously received the Sacrament of Reconciliation (or this can be done with your children before the Sacrament). On Wednesday the 5th September - we will hold our ‘Parent Faith Formation and Information Night’ for the children preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the F/1/2 room, at St. Joseph’s, Nagambie. Then on Sunday the 9th September - we will have our ‘Rite of Enrolment’ Mass for these children preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This Mass will be held in St. Malachy’s Church at 10:00 a.m. This Mass is where the children and families commit to their involvement in the Sacramental Program. If you have any queries, please contact Liz Tang at St. Joseph’s, on 57942608.
