...Your.Daily.Fix.................Only bar in lafleche burns tO the grOundctv.ca - The only bar in Lafleche has burned to the ground, just a few months after a fire destroyed another business in the small southern Sas-katchewan community. Firefighters were called to the Fly-ing Goose Inn after a waitress smelled smoke just after 9 p.m. Tuesday night. The town’s fire chief, Maurice Bouvi-er, says the fire is believed to have start-ed in a smoking area on the side of the building. The flames quickly spread up through
the walls and into the second and third floors. Fire crews from Gravelbourg and Kincaid helped battle the blaze into the early morning, but they were unable to save the business. Two people were inside at the time, and no one was hurt. The cause of the fire is under inves-tigation. In February, a fire destroyed Mer-chandise on Main, a store and coffee shop in the small community, located about 200 kilometres southwest of Re-gina.

tOO hOt tO fly: suMMer air-line Pet eMbargOes If you’re traveling with your pet this summer and plan to fly to your destina-tion, make sure you familiarize yourself with the airline’s pet embargo policy be-fore you book your flight. During the summer, many airlines don’t allow pets aboard flights-as checked baggage or as cargo-when temperatures are high. Air-line pet embargoes are in the best interest of your pet and play a vital role in ensuring his safety. Not only is air travel stressful for your pet, but it can also pose serious health risks. Being confined in his carrier for long periods of time during the hottest months of the year is potentially dangerous for your pet and may lead to dehydration and heatstroke. In addition, certain breeds, such as brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dogs and cats, are susceptible to pulmonary dis-
tress when temperatures are extreme. According to the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPA-TA), embargoes protect pets from expo-sure to extreme heat while they’re in the holding areas and terminal facilities, while moving them between terminals and air-craft, or while they’re on an aircraft await-ing departure. “Heat embargoes are critical during the summer months,” says Sally Smith, past president of IPATA. “They protect our pets and keep them safe and comfortable while traveling.” Since airlines impose embargoes to en-sure your pet’s safety, there are no excep-tions. However, if an embargo is in effect on the day of your flight, the airline will work with you to re-route your flight, if possible, or schedule your flight for anoth-er day.

An acquaintance of mine who is a physician told
this story about her then-four-year-old daughter. On the way to preschool, the
doctor had left her stetho-scope on the car seat, and her little girl picked it up and began playing with it. Be still, my heart, thought my friend, gee, my daugh-ter wants to follow in my footsteps and be a doctor! Then the child spoke into the instrument: “Welcome to McDonald’s. May I take
your order?”

This Day in History - May 23rd1973: RCMP CELEBRATES ITS CENTENNIALHe’s a strong, brave, honest, horseback-riding Canadian in a red tunic who always gets his man. At least, that’s the clichéd image of a Mountie. But with a history stretching back to 1873, the real Royal Canadian Mounted Police have always been more complex than their squeaky-clean, steely stereotype.• Canada’s first prime minister, John A. Macdonald, ini-tiated the idea for the North-West Mounted Police (later known as the RCMP). In the early 1870s, lawless American whisky traders were starting to flood Canada’s newly ac-quired Northwest Territories (which included modern-day Saskatchewan and Alberta). Macdonald was well aware of the violence that accompanied the early population of the American western plains. He didn’t want a repeat of these problems in Canada, so he created the NWMP to ensure law and order as Canada populated its new lands.• The RCMP’s centennial celebrations featured displays and performances by RCMP horsemen and musicians, taking place in the summer of 1973 to coincide with tourist season. The Queen visited Saskatchewan and Alberta in July as part of the celebrations. A July 1973 Globe and Mail article re-marked on her attendance: “How much more striking it was to see the RCMP’s centennial birthday ceremonies presid-ed over by the Queen whose great-great grandmother had signed the original documents which brought this splendid force into being.”
• There were a number of interesting RCMP centennial products for sale in 1973. There were RCMP-themed col-lectors’ plates and souvenir pottery, and there was even a souvenir rifle. The Winchester Rifle Company produced a copy of the rifle originally used by the Mounties in the 19th century, selling it for $125. A London, Ont.-based bubble-gum company also produced a set of RCMP trading cards, which featured fun facts on the history of the Mounties.
