LakesideGardenisthe53-hectarewesternsectionofJurongLakeGardens,Singapore’sthirdNationalGarden,andthefirstintheheartlands.Duringitsdevelopment,greatcarewastakentoconservetheexistingbiodiversitywhileincorporatingelementsofcommunityandplayforvisitors. Consistingofamatrixofecologicalhabitatssuchasafreshwaterswampforestandgrasslands,LakesideGardenishometoadiversecollectionoffloraandfauna.Alongsideeffortsmadetoconserveitsoriginalbiodiversity,otherspecieshavebeenspeciallycuratedforvisitorstoappreciatenature’sbeauty.Forexample,theRosyTrumpettreesandPinkMempattreesthatlinetheNorthernSpineofLakesideGardenbloominaspectaculartrailofpink!

1 Entrance PavilionDesignedtoresemblethecrownofaMalayanBanyan(Ficus microcarpa),theEntrancePavilioniswhereyoucanstartyourjourney.LookupandimagineyourselfstandingundertherestfulshadeoftheMalayanBanyan,withraysofsunlightoccasionallypenetratingthecanopy.OurfriendlyVisitorServicescounterstaffwillbegladtohelpwithanyqueriesthatyoumighthave.
2 The CanyonThereddish-orangerocksthatmakeupthegabionwallsofTheCanyonweresalvagedfromexcavatedbouldersduringLakesideGarden’sdevelopment.Nowtheygivenewlifetotheplethoraofplantspeciesthatgrowonthem.AmongstthesearetheBamboo Orchid (Arundina graminiflora)andMexican Petunia (Ruellia simplex)withtheirvibrantpinkandpurpleflowers.
ThestrikingcontrastbetweentheredbricksandlushgreenerymakesTheCanyonapopularspottotakethatperfectInstagramphoto.

ClusiaCovefeaturestwowaterplayareas,anEcoPond,apavilionandacafé.TheSandPlayPoolandtheTidalPlayPoolaredesignedtosimulatethevariousuniqueinteractionsfoundinnaturalcoastlineenvironments.ThewaterinClusiaCoverunsthroughaclosed-loopcirculationsystem.AswaterfromtheplayareasflowintotheEcoPond,itisfilteredbyacleansingbiotopeconsistingofaquaticplants.ThewateristhendisinfectedinanundergroundUVroombeforereturningtothewaterplayareas.
ClusiaCoveishometoadiverserangeofplantscommonlyfoundinfreshwaterwetlandecosystems.Forexample,theSwamp Lily (Thalia geniculata)isoneoftheaquaticplantsthatmakesupthecleansingbiotope.Noticehowitspairedpurpleflowerssportauniquelyirregularshape.DoalsolookforthewhiteandpinkflowersoftheAutograph Tree (Clusia rosea)fromwhichClusiaCovegetsitsname.
OverlookingtheEcoPondisacaféwherefamiliescanenjoyavarietyofAsianandWesterndishes.
Alongthewaytothenextlandmark,youwillbewelcomedbyaclusteroftoweringfigtrees.ThisincludestheWeeping Fig (Ficus benjamina)whosefruitattractsalargevarietyofbirdsandinsects.SeeifyoucancatchaglimpseofthebrightyellowbottomoftheYellow-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier).Itusuallyforagesforfruitandinsectshere.Noticehowtheblackpatcharounditseyesmakesitlookasifitiswearinganeyemask!
4 ABC Waters Jurong LakeAsyouenjoyanunobstructedviewofJurongLake,noticethenumerousfloatingwetlandsthatdotthewater’sedge.Thesefloatingwetlandsconsistofemergentplantsgrowingonfloatingmats.Theirrootsabsorbmineralsfromthewater,filteringitinaprocesscalledphytoremediation.Tryvisitingthenearbyboardwalkforacloserlook.
TheMalayan Water Monitor (Varanus salvator)canbecommonlyseenemergingfromthewaterandbaskingunderthesun.Itcansometimesbeobservedcrossingthefootpathsaswell.Becarefulnottodisturbit!
Asyouprogressonthistrail,youmighthavenoticedthebeautifulpinkflowerspresentonsometreesalongtheway.ThesebelongtoLakesideGarden’scollectionofspeciallycuratedPinkTrees,consistingofspeciessuchastheRosy Trumpet Tree (Tabebuia rosea)andPink Mempat (Cratoxylum formosum).Followingprolongeddryweather,thesetreesflowerprofusely,producingclustersofflowersthatendupcoveringthetrailbelowinabeautifulmatofpink.
LocatedwithinthegardensisalsoWaterwaysWatchSociety,anindependentvolunteergroupthatbringspeopletogethertoloveourwaterwaysandinspireenvironmentalstewardship.

6 Forest RambleCentredontheconceptofBiophilia,ForestRambleisthelargestnatureplaygardenintheheartlands.The13excitingadventurestationsenablechildrentoexploreandemulatethemovementofanimalsthattypicallyinhabitafreshwaterswampforest.WhethertosoaronglidersatHeronPlayorleapontrampolinesatFrogPlay,thechoiceisyours!Therearealsoinclusiveplayelements,suchasawheelchair-friendlyswingandmusicalplaypanels.
TheplantswithinForestRamblehavebeenspeciallychosenfortheiruniqueshapes,texturesandcolourstostimulateoursenses.LookathowtheRainbow Eucalyptus(Eucalyptus deglupta)hasabeautifulmulti-colouredtrunk,sheddingitsbarktodisplayhuesofblue,greenandorange.ThePaper Bark Tree (Melaleuca cajuputi)hasaspongytrunkandmanylayersofbarkthatseemtobeflakyandpeeling.ForestRambleisalsohometoadiversityofbutterflies.MarvelatthevibrantcoloursoftheCommon Grass Yellow (Eurema hecabe)andPlain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus)ifyoucanspotthem!
