Garden&HOMEuplex built by Lansing contractorenny Becker completes full circle for area native sisters

    san Cantine-Maxson

e movie “Field of Dreams”ed the phrase “If you build

y will come.” Local con-r Kenny Becker hopedas the scenario for a newx he wanted to build inng last year.cker, a long-time contrac-m Lansing, has complet-

umerous types of build-rojects but usually thosects were proposed by thers. This time, he decidedeculate by buying a lot inng and building his ownct, in the hopes that he

be able to sell it before.the project was taking

e, Becker was at a social

and began discussinguplex with Ann Delaneyal Lansing, who said she

want the duplex unit lo-on the corner of Beck-

ot. Ann’s husband, Frank, ied and she was ready tointo town from their beef

n the country. Becker hadAnn and Frank’s house onarm 20 years ago. Theyeen very satised with thee and his crew had done,e felt condent that shebe happy with another

built by Becker.ce Clemments, Ann’s sis-

o lived with her husband,in Utah, thought the ideaoving back to Lansing

ded appealing. She spec-d that they should buy thehalf of the duplex. Evenh Alice and Jerry hadn Utah for 44 years, theyready for a change. Beingary family for many years,

    had nally settled in Utah,

where Jerry worked as secu-rity police on the base, but hewas ready to retire. Family wasclose by in the Midwest andher mother lives in ThorntonHeights in Lansing.

By December of 2014, Beck-er had rm commitments fromboth sisters that they wantedthe duplex. They liked the con-cept, plus the specic lot wherethe duplex was to be built hadstrong ties for them since itwas where their parents hadlived for so many years. Alice’smother told her that she wasborn in the house next door. Itseemed like completing the fullcircle to come back to that lo-cation.

When Becker started theproject, the 120-foot x 60-footlot had an old garage on it. Heexplained, “I knew there wasalso an old foundation for thehouse buried on the lot as well. This was the rst time I choseto do the entire project frombeginning to end all by myself.I felt I had enough experienceto draw the plans and have an

engineer look at the truss work.I drew up the plans for the du-plex with each side having1,380 square feet, 440 squarefeet for each garage, plus thebasement if they wanted one.The overall length of the build-ing was 100 feet. I designed itwith the garage separating thetwo units since people don’twant the sounds of the oth-

er half of a duplex drifting intotheir living space. I also wantedto put the garage facing south. The only thing that joins the du-plex units besides the garageis a wall to the master closets. We added extra sound barrierinsulation in the closet so thereis virtually no sound that carriesfrom one side to the other. Thatwall and the garage is the only

This new duplex built in Lansing by contractor Kenny Becker and now shared by sisters Ann Delaney and Alice

Jerry Clemments was constructed on the same lot where the sisters’ parents, Joe and Alberta Troendle, o

The Troendles originallylived in rural Harpers Ferry, butas their daughters got moreinvolved in school they knewthey wanted to live in Waukon. They considered building, butthen started looking at existinghomes. A real estate agent toldthem to make a list of all thehomes they would consider, even if they were not for sale. The property on East Mainappealed to them because of

the large lot, and Brooke lovedthe fact that since it hadn’t hadmuch updating since it wasbuilt in 1904 they could do theupdates they wanted to theirown liking.

    The original 1904 foundation,

basement, the 2x4s and othersupport beams are all thatcurrently remain of the originalhouse.

The house now sports a newroof, windows, siding, electricalwork, heating vents, drywall, cabinetry – about everythingthat could be redone, was. They were able to renish someof the original wood oors andwoodwork: other areas of thehome have new ooring andtrim installed.

Although they did not changethe overall layout of the houseby much, the Troendles made

their home more “open” byremoving 13 interior doors thatthey did not replace. They alsoadded a ve-foot extension of

Garden&HOMEeparing your garden this springvid M. Johnson

the snows recede andrass turns from the burntn to a vibrant green, one’s attention turnse siren call of spring asr’s grip weakens its holdature. Spring signals its

with the onslaught ofcycle trafc, parentsg catch with their kidsbackyard and that sure

of spring, the tilling ofumerous gardens foundghout the community.

what is the protocolreparation process to

mine the most successfuln planting? Anyonehas been involved withng a garden always hasher idea what is best for

d garden, but there doesan avenue that offersest approach to growingoductive garden. Iowa

University’s Extensione provides educationale and information thatenhance a gardener’s

knowledge and ability to have aproductive garden.

When preparing your gardenseed bed, as the winter snowsmelt off and the spring rainsdecrease, it is important toavoid the wet soils so as notto damage it and to also avoida hard soil condition resultingfrom working it when it is toowet. Each individual gardenerwill have to make the decisionon when to start to till dependingon not only the moisture but thetype of soil, as different soiltypes react differently whenworked while wet.

The garden soils are alive andwill not produce when overlywet just as they will not producewhen they are extremely dry. Agood soil base contains thehealthy ration of 25% water to

25% air, so that pore spacesbetween soil particles are notcompacted from moisture andnot limiting the soil to breathe, plus having just the rightamount of moisture. Properlyprepared gardens will alsohave a healthy contingent of

earthworms, nature’s little tillersof the soil.

If you have a garden plotthat does not drain well, it isrecommended by the Extensionofce to add organic matter, likecompost or peat. If you are notsure if the soil is ready to work,a rule of thumb is to clump upthe soil and if it dissolves orcrumbles after you release it, itis about ready to work.

The soil type is not the onlydetermining factor on how earlyyou can work your plot. Theamount of sunlight exposureis a key factor, plus whether ornot your garden is exposed to amore open air environment. Isit restricted to wind ow due tobuildings or trees limiting the airmovement? Wind can be an aidto drying out the garden if there

is an excess of moisture. It is suggested that yourgarden plot is tested for themany nutrients and otherelements that the soil andyour plants need to thrive andproduce. The Extension ofceoffers kits, and your local

nursery and or a garden vendoralso may offer the differentproducts to test the soil beforeworking and planting yourgarden. There are 13 elementsthat plants need, but nitrogen(N), phosphorous (P) andpotassium (K) are three mainelements that make up thefertilizer required by your plantpopulation.

an alkaline content. Electronicmeters, indicator test strips, and chemical colored dyes willhelp to test for pH. Your testingwill be determined by howmuch you want to spend, but if

you are experiencing a gardenthat just is not giving out whatyou are expecting, then testingis recommended to give anaccurate evaluation of whatyour garden needs.

If you are planting some cornin part of your garden plot and, say, tomatoes and peppers inanother section of your garden, you may encounter difcultiesto match the soil to the needsof each particular produceyou are planting. Sometimes, adjusting pH to each individualplant or section of garden maycause more problems than justeliminating deciencies.

Besides fertilizer and solvingany pH deciencies, applyingcompost to your garden mayalso provide benets. Whenyour garden soil requires an

additional boost with organicmaterial to stimulate plantgrowth and enhance waterretention, a recommendedone to three inches of compostmixed into the soil will assist

with that boost. If straightcompost is not an option or notdesirable, applying a preparedtop soil, a blend that producesa quality soil product, maybe most helpful. The topsoilmay be mixed in the existingsoil, and one to two inches isrecommended.

Guessing when that lastfrost in April will occur helps inorganizing and planting yourseeds. Seed potatoes aretricky; if you plant too early, such as when some gardenersobserve the tradition to planttheir potatoes every GoodFriday, then you might lose
