SO WHAT IS FRACKING?Fracking (“hydraulic fracturing”) is a relatively new process of extracting hard-to-reach gas deposits in shale rock known as shale gas. Fracking involves drilling, vertically & horizontally, hundreds of metres underground. Then explosions are generated underground by pumping millions of millions of gallons of fresh water, mixed with sand & chemicals to crack open the layers of shale rock and release the gas. Fracking has never been done without chemicals anywhere in the world.

Many of these chemicals, along withthe radioactive elements (such as radon)

that the explosions disturb, simply remainunderground. In 2010, the government offered

onshore shale gas options licences to companies in areascovering counties Cavan, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Kerry,

LeitLeitrim, Limerick, Mayo, Monaghan,Roscommon and Sligo. Three companies currently hold options licences covering

areas of Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Cavan, and Clare. Tamboran also has a Northern Ireland exploration

licence in Fermanagh.

In the North West Carboniferous Basin of Ireland the current plan envisions ‘frack pads’ of up to 7 acres in size, with up to 24 wells on each frack pad and 1 frack pad every 2 km. These wells connect together underground forming a network of gas pipes. Companies have until February 28, 2013 to submit their application application for the second stage of licensing, exploration. So far, the government has said that no hydraulic fracturing will take place as part of exploration drilling. If the government grant the exploration licenses, companies will have to prove the viability of the projects in order to proceed to the final stage of licensing, production. It remains to be seen if they will be able to do this withoutffracking.

• The lifetime of a frack well is somewhere between 12-20 years. When the gas is gone the Irish people will be left with huge areas of land that has been concreted over, empty gas wells and a contaminated water supply.• Won’t provide cheap gas or energy security for Ireland as the gas produced will be exported and sold back to the IIrish people at full market price and all expenses before and during gas production can be offset aga

Shale gas will distract from investment in renewable energy that can provide sustainable solutions to our energy needs. If exploited, shale gas will ‘lock-in’ fossil fuel dependency rather than providing a transition to a zero carbon economy. In Ireland and globally, the poorest communities with the least resources are ffaced with the biggest responsibilities in dealing with climate change. The voices of these communities are cut out of the debate. To achieve climate justice this must change. The voices of women, Travellers, migrants, marginalised communities and young people must be heard. The communities threatened by fracking must play a meaningful part in decision making. making.

LANGCO

Counties - Leitrim, Cavan, Roscommon, Sligo. Formerly Finavera, LANGCO re-registered as a company in August 2012 and have been very quiet since then.

ENEGI OIL

Counties Clare, Limerick.Enegi is involved in the project to extract shale gas found in the Clare Basin, which covers 495km2.of County Clare. Enegi currently has a licensing option which will eexpire in February 2013. It must apply for the next stage, an exploratory licence, before February 28, 2013.

Movies and Viral videos are great for giving members of the campaign greater understanding of fracking and for raising awareness amongst members of the public. Here are some of the best:GASLANDTHE fracking movie: http://www.gaslandthemovie.com/ConContact [email protected] and we can help you get a copy of the film. THE SKY IS PINKA great short film from the maker of Gasland revealing how the oil and gas companies efforts to discredit the science which shows fracking is bad. FRACKING HELLA shoA short British film on the effects of fracking in the United States available on YouTube.BAN FRACKING BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!A clear 3 minute explanation of why fracking must be banned from the Greens European Free Alliance in collaboration with the Friends of the Earth.

1. CALL ON MINISTER RABBITTE AND MINISTER OF STATE O’DOWD TO BAN FRACKING: Take part in the Friends of the Earth action to ban fracking: http://www.foe.ie/takeaction/ban-fracking/ Think of creative ways in which you can remind Minister Rabbitte and Minister O Dowd that young people do not wwant fracking. Email or call the minister and keep your message short and to the point: ‘Keep your promise Pat’. Ask them to meet with YFoE. Email: [email protected] and [email protected] Tel: Department Office 01 678 2000 & 01 678 9807

TAKE ACTION!

2. REALLY GET THE ATTENTION OF YOUR LOCAL TDS Every campaign suggests you go and talk to your TD, but how often do we really and how often do they pay attention? Try some innovate ideas out! Send them letters on love heart shaped paper- If they loved Ireland/ had a heart they’d ban fracking!AArrange a mass signing on campus or in the community- make the delivery a spectacle and invite the media and local community groups.

You can find your local TD’s contact details here: http://frackingfreeireland.org/contact/contact-irish-politicians/

3. CHAT TO JIM AND JONATHANPoor old Jim and Jonathan are civil servants who never get to talk to any lovely members of the public. They probably don’t realise that the young people of Ireland are so concerned about fracking and will be horrified when we tell them...

Contact Jonathan Harte at the Minister’s office with your concerns. Email: [email protected] Tel: +353-(0)1-678 9807

Contact Jim Whelan of the Petroleum Affairs Division of the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural RResources. Jim’s office co-ordinates the licence process and he loves phone calls Email: [email protected]. Tel: +353-(0)1-678 2691

4. GET THE WORD OUT AND TAKE ACTION ON CAMPUS AND IN YOUR COMMUNITYGet articles into the college and community newspapers;Show Gasland and other films;Invite speakers from any of the groups mobilising against fracking to visit your college or community (see contactssection);section);Have fun with all of the puns on the word ‘fracking’ you can paint on banners and try dressing up in rabbit costumes in honour of our minister Rabbitte to remind him not to hop to the beat of Big Oil & Gas;If you’re a student, get your SU to pass a motion banning fracking

12

5. PROMOTE THE ‘GUARANTEED FRACKING FREE’/’KEEP IRELAND FRACKING FREE’ LABELInvite shops and cafes on campus and businesses in your community to proudly use these labels. Use it as a way of engaging local business in conversations about fracking & how it will affect their livelihoods. Publicise your successes!

6.6. JOIN THE MOBILISATION IN GREATER DUBLIN (INCLUDING MAYNOOTH), CORK OR GALWAY- OR START A CAMPAIGN WHERE YOU ARE.

See the contacts section, join ‘Environmental Student Activists’ on Facebook and email [email protected] to get in touch with your nearest campaign.
