YMCA of Kingston | 2018 COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT
A strong sense of belonging can inspire and transform lives in incredible ways.
At the YMCAs of Kingston, and Brockville and Area, we know that our impact goes far beyond simply providing places to get help or stay fit. What makes us special is our inclusivity - how we welcome people from all walks of life - and through our engaging programs and enthusiastic employees and volunteers, inspiring connection and belonging. Whether it is providing a struggling family with affordable child care, empowering children and youth with new-found abilities and confidence at camp, or offering encouragement and guidance to those looking to adopt and maintain an active lifestyle, our Ys are communities of caring neighbours, friends and family who support everyone on their journey.
Our impact is undeniable.
Tens of thousands of people turn to our Ys for help and we grant financial assistance to, and forgive fees for, approximately 20 percent of individuals, families and children who would otherwise be unable to participate in our life-changing programs and services. Working hand-in-hand with our community partners, we ensure that those most at risk find the stability to develop future options and become more fully engaged members of our community. Every day at the YMCAs of Kingston, and Brockville and Area, we witness people learning new skills, making new friends, getting healthier and working towards personal success – together. It is an incredibly powerful sight and I feel privileged to be part of the team that plays a vital our role in so many lives.
In 2018, my family and I moved to join these incredible community organizations and were appreciative how the communities made us feel welcomed. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge and thank the incredible work previously done by my friends and colleagues, our retired CEOs Mary Kloosterman, and Diana Deakin-Thomas. Mary and Diana devoted years to the betterment of our communities and helped to spear-head the close partnership between Kingston and Brockville and Area
As we join to become the YMCA of Eastern Ontario and look toward the future, our focus will be on improving our operations and services, being fiscally responsible, establishing new strategic partnerships and strengthening current ones, empowering our great staff and volunteer teams to be innovative, and provide opportunities for them to grow and develop. Keeping these in the forefront will enable the YMCA of Kingstone and Brockville and area to further its Reach, increase its Impact and ensure its long-term Sustainability.
Rob Adams CEO, YMCA of Eastern Ontario
It has been an exhilarating year for the YMCAs in Kingston, and Brockville and Area as we strove to determine a course for our future to improve the Y’s reach and impact in our region.
As many of you will know, participation has been static or declining since 2011 while competition in the fitness field has intensified. This environment was our call-to-action and we rose to the challenge. On November 28, 2018, the boards of both YMCAs voted unanimously to amalgamate the branches to become more robust and resilient.
We also worked together to find a shared CEO, to take the baton from our now-retired CEOs Mary Kloosterman and Diana Deakin-Thomas. This was also accomplished in November with the hiring of Rob Adams and has set the stage for our new regional approach.
Both boards worked diligently to review our position and have set out a five-year plan that will see stable growth and retention of membership, higher quality of programs and services, renewed facilities, improved community partnerships, expanded rural programming and increased visibility of the YMCA across our communities. We also want to strengthen our position as a charity-of-choice in the hearts and minds of people across Eastern Ontario.
We are looking forward with great optimism to 2019 and beyond and thank members of our Brockville and Kingston boards for setting us on our course.
Warm regards on behalf of the Kingston and Brockville and Area boards,
Jay Rayner Board ChairKingston

YMCA of Kingston | 2018 COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT
Mission The YMCA of Kingston is a “community-centred” Canadian charity where members, volunteers and staff work together to foster the development of spirit, mind and body of individuals and families.
Vitality Starts Here
When Valerie first retired, she had many dreams of things she wanted to do. But she noticed that she couldn’t walk stairs very well and was starting to have trouble getting around. She knew she wanted to garden and travel and for that, she needed to be able to move around comfortably.
She saw an ad for the YMCA and thought “why not go for it?” She says it was the best thing she ever did. That was 25 years ago.
Valerie, at 90 years old, has done lots of different classes but her current favourite is Zumba because she loves the music and dancing. She says that because the steps are fast, it challenges her feet and brain and keeps her young.
“I’ve made so many friends and we always chat after class. I always feel wonderful when I come back from the Y; I feel like I can tackle anything.
"Getting off the couch and joining the Y was the best thing I ever did. It’s given me everything I need to enjoy my retirement.”
