Some rules we were never taught. When it comes to home décor, there are decorating basics that many of us are not aware of. How high do you hang artwork on the wall and what about the new plasma TVs? How big a sofa should you purchase? Should you match your window treat-ments to the wall colour and what if you really like that fire engine red?

Décor expert Karl Lohnes and Sue Rainville, director of marketing for Hunter Douglas, Canada’s leading window fashions manufacturer, offer the fol-lowing input.

Artwork and TVs:“Never hang artwork in

relationship to the height of the ceiling,” says Lohnes. “It should be hung in relation to the anchor you’re hang-ing it above or the floor. In a low–ceilinged room, this means you should hang your artwork about 8 inches above the anchor. In a room with high ceil-ings, hang pieces 12 inches above the anchor.”

According to Lohnes, when hanging artwork without an anchor, the basic rule is to measure 66 inches from the floor – the middle of your artwork should be at this height. This brings the artwork at approximate “eye level” – the normal qualification for hanging art.

What about the plas-ma televisions? Advises Lohnes: They should be hung about 40 to 42 inch-

es from the floor to the television’s center. When hanging art or a flat–screen television over a mantel, it should be placed three to six inches above the top of the mantel.”

The sofaThe rule for purchasing

a sofa, says Lohnes, is that it should be no longer than two thirds of the width of the room. This means that your sofa will be easy to move around and you’ll have room for tables along-side of it. He also suggests that tight–back sofas are the most space–efficient as opposed to deeper sofas which take up extra space because of their large cush-ions.

To make the room seem larger, consider purchas-ing a sofa with exposed decorative legs that lets you see underneath it as op-

posed to one with a skirted base. What about for a very small space? “Make a small space feel as large as pos-sible with a sofa under 38–inches deep and 80–inches long,” concludes Lohnes.

The window treatments and colour

“First, look at the win-dow space itself, then the area surrounding it and, finally, the room in its en-tirety,” says Rainville. “If you coordinate the win-dow fashions with the wall colour it will help visually expand the room because low contrasts keep the eye moving around the room. To make the window or room appear smaller and cozier, use dark, warm colours and high contrast between the window and wall.”

She also notes that it is good to remember that

colour intensifies as you increase areas of coverage – so some brights might work best as an accent color. When combining colours in a room a good rule of thumb, she advises, is that the primary colour should be featured in up to 75 percent of the room, the secondary colour about 15 to 20 percent and the third colour about 10 percent.

A screened-in porch or a three-season room can be a wel-come space that adds viable liv-ing area to a house. Oftentimes, these rooms serve as a bridge between the indoors and out-side, and they can offer the crea-ture comforts of any other room in the home. Just as they would a bedroom or family room, many homeowners prefer to decorate this area so it doesn’t look like an extension of the backyard, instead showcasing the home-owner’s personal style.

Homeowners can add many accents to a screened-in porch. Keep in mind that because this three-season room will likely need to endure the weather, in-cluding moisture and sunlight, decorating should be planned accordingly.

Turn a screened-in porch into a welcoming space with a few different ideas. Here are some things to consider.

• Think about adding sheer curtains to create privacy and keep sun out on hot days. It is important to choose fabrics that are fade-resistant but also resist-ant to mold and mildew. Muslin or even mosquito netting in dif-ferent shades can be draped to add some visual interest.

• Look for outdoor furni-ture that is both comfortable and attractive. Wicker, wood and wrought-iron are popular materials for outdoor designs. There are also cushions crafted from weatherproof materials that can add a pop of color and

comfort to the space.• Enhance the area with some

wall art. Hang an anchor for a nautical theme, or some whimsi-cal accessories to create a kitschy country feel.

• Spruce up the lighting so it’s not sterile outdoor flood lights.Install a ceiling fan to circulate the air and add some aesthetic appeal. Or consider hanging a chandelier made of materials that are impervious to the weath-er, like seashells or bamboo.

• Just because you’re adja-cent to the yard doesn’t mean you can’t bring some plant life inside of the screened room as well. Potted plants will soften the room and add color and a homey feeling to the space. Just be aware that outdoor plants have to be watered more frequently than in-door plants because of their ten-dency to dry out in the sun.

• Define the entertaining space with a throw rug made from outdoor fabric. Essentially you can create a mini living room right outside.

• Be sure there is an electrical outlet available on the porch so that you can plug in a radio or even a tabletop lamp if you enjoy reading in the twilight areas. An outlet can also make it possible to plug in a small fountain or water feature.

The creature comforts of in-doors can be extended to a three-season room or screened-in porch to provide another space in the home in which to enter-tain or relax.

The challenge in choos-ing exterior colour is to find the right balance be-tween standing out and fitting in.

Often the biggest col-our decisions have been made by the time you get to choosing exterior paint colours: the brick, the stone elements, and your roof. To help you see these materials as colours, match each of them to a paint chip. This is a quick and effective aid to de-veloping your home’s ex-terior palette. Add a paint chip for the roof and you are ready to go.

Next, choose your main trim colour, and when you do, be extremely wary of white. There is very little white in nature so stark white can look artificial and inelegant. Be sure that any whites you use are what designers call “toned”whites like Moth Gray (PPG Pittsburgh Paints, 515–4) or Ashen (PPG Pittsburgh Paints 516–4). These look off–white or warm grey as paint chips but will still look very white against brick and stone. They’re softer and more pleasing to the eye.

Make the laws of colour perception work for you when assigning colours to the architectural fea-tures of your home. Light things grab our attention and they also tend to look big (which is why some of us favour black work-out clothing). Take stock of your facade and assign the brightest trim colour to its most attractive trim features, such as decora-tive mouldings, window

sashes, brackets, and col-umns.

If you want to calm your façade then the rule of thumb is to reduce contrast. Tone down your trim with natural–looking neutrals in a deeper range of colours, like Sharkskin (PPG Pittsburgh Paints, 513–5) or Eiffel Tower (PPG Pittsburgh Paints 521–5), both the colour of stone.

Make the details you want to be less visible

recede with a warm off–black like PPG’s Gibraltar Gray (530–6). These shad-ow colours help create harmony in your palette.

Sometimes, toning down unattractive fea-tures won’t be enough. To make utility doors, down–pipes and truly un-sightly things disappear, you need outright cam-ouflage. Use the colour that you matched to your main building material (brick, siding), as the col-our for all ugly things.

Dramatic or eye–catch-ing accent colours should always be used sparing-ly. The front door – the welcome to your home – should be prominent, so this is where you can break loose. Classic reds, dark burgundies like PPG Pittsburgh Paints Bur-gundy Wine (534–7), and navy blues like their Black Flame (545–7), are mag-nificent, but also consider Autumn Fern (PPG Pitts-burgh Paints 311–7), a khaki green that comple-

ments the rusty colour of red brick.

If you prefer a mono-chromatic palette, add drama by choosing a really dark door colour like Sarsaparilla (PPG Pittsburgh Paints, 527–7) or Black Magic (PPG Pitts-burgh Paints 518–7), both of which look handsome in a gloss finish.

Generally, there are three rules for garage doors: Always avoid bright colours. Always avoid high contrast with the dominant colour in your palette. Never match them to your front door. (If you think you want to use a stand–out colour on your front door, camou-flage your garage door so it doesn’t compete.)

For shutters, you need to choose between blend-ing them in and making them pop. To blend, use your shadow neutral. For pop, match your shutters to your door colour. This will draw more attention to your home so be sure

your façade is up to it.White windows can be

a curse. They are too bright to work well with brick or stone. If you are stuck with a brick house and white windows, then choose a toned white a little deeper than the white of your win-dow frames and save your deeper shadow colour for areas non–adjacent to the windows.

Invest in the highest–quality exterior paint you can afford. Painting the exterior is expensive, or time–consuming – usu-ally, both. Look for an ex-terior paint that’s backed by the strongest warranty you can find, like the Manor Hall Timeless line by PPG Pittsburgh Paints, which is backed by a life-time warranty against cracking, peeling and flaking. At a premium of about $10 to $15 per gal-lon over standard exterior paints, this is a modest in-cremental investment set to deliver a big return.

Choosing and matching exterior colours

A well–landscaped yard can provide a lot more than good looks. Landscaping can also in-crease property value, of-fer home–energy savings and provide privacy and home security.

“We’ve all seen how a good first impression can move a buyer to take a closer look and be more willing to overlook short-comings a property may have,” say Carlo Racioppo, broker/owner at Royal Le-Page Realty Plus. “How-ever, landscaping goes beyond curb appeal and offers some added bene-fits as well.”

Property value: In contrast to many home improvements, the value of an investment in land-scape improvement in-creases over time, since the growth and maturity of trees and shrubs con-tinues to enhance aes-

thetic appeal. The value of an attractive landscape to the selling price of a home is often cited at be-tween 10 and 12 per cent. However, a 2009 Virginia State University study concluded that design sophistication was the highest ranked factor to add perceived value of a home, followed by plant size. Thus, securing the services of a landscape design professional could optimize your return on investment.

Energy savings: Stra-tegic placement of trees around your home can significantly reduce monthly utility bills. Deciduous trees, when placed to shade windows that receive a lot of sun-shine, can lower energy bills with a lower draw on air conditioning. Since deciduous trees lose their leaves in winter, the sun

can shine in during the cooler months, serving to warm the house. To save on heating bills in winter, a thick evergreen hedge can block cold winds from robbing a house of heat.

Privacy and security: A thorny hedge at key points around a property provides a good deter-rent to intruders. Prickly shrubs around windows can also ward off burglars, but be sure to trim back regularly since shrubs that have grown too tall can have the opposite ef-fect. Trees and shrubs also serve to provide privacy in a yard and to block unwanted views outside your property.

Do you have white room envy?

A busy life makes the vision of a tranquil space – where light pours through fine, billowing sheers onto a shiny white floor and across rich tex-tures of beautiful min-imalist furnishings – very appealing. It’s a fantasy place where the chaos of the world melts away, to be replaced by a peaceful calm.

But doing white right is hugely demanding and requires great discipline. White has rules. Here they are:

Natural light is es-sential. Natural light is full–spectrum. If it comes in from more than one direction, it sculpts the shapes in the room and brings white to life. Use white sheers to soften the look without reducing its light. Add shiny materi-als to bounce it around – polished marble, crys-tal, and mirror; light silks and satins. If you don’t have lots of natural light, colour is a better option for you than white.

Get the right white. Pick white with the same care you would take to choose any other col-our. Architects often use whites that are too pure,

too cold and too loud. Their whites make it look as if you haven’t painted yet. Instead, choose a toned white like Winter Mood (512–1) by PPG Pittsburgh Paints. It’s softer, but still luminous. The bigger the room, the deeper the white should be. Paraffin (PPG Pitts-burgh Paints, 521–2) will look white but not empty. In the country, choose

a white that is a little warmer or a little more grounded such as Gravel (PPG Pittsburgh Paints 416–2). It will take the formal edge off white and relax it.

Paint ceiling and trim the same white as the walls. Or, to add a little interest without inter-rupting that sought–after white calm, add a pale blue–grey colour like

Icy Bay (PPG Pittsburgh Paints 551–1) to put sky on the ceiling.

Explore sheen. Satin on the ceiling adds light and sparkle. High–gloss trim looks elegant in the city. Matte finishes are better in the country on all surfaces.

Colour reduction.White is a snob. It likes its own company and finds any and every other col-

our an intrusion, so get rid of colour clutter and bring back only neutrals, very muted and faded pastels or, best of all, the colour that comes with natural materials like wood (blondes pre-ferred), and metals (pref-erably silver or pewter). For drama use black’s complementary colour, black.

Less is more. Better

is Better. White rooms should not be overloaded with too much furniture and each piece must be worthy of attention. White will not camouflage dirt, damage or disor-der the way colour does. Everything is revealed in a white room, so furni-ture becomes sculpture. Good or bad, it takes cen-tre–stage, so every piece should be well propor-tioned and timelessly ap-pealing, and each should have air around it. This keeps the room spacious and light on its feet.

Go for textured and tactile. While we covet white because it reduces the visual noise, it is very important to add tactile elements to keep it from looking and feeling clin-ical. Contrast shine and shimmer with a variety of textures from fur (faux is fine), velvets, and knits, to hand–scraped wood, hammered surfaces and raw, primitive things.

Go for seamless sen-suality. If you have come this far, why not indulge all your senses? Animate your white space with aromatic candles, flowers and music, and the white–room fantasy will become your daily reality.

The kitchen will al-ways be the centre of the domestic universe. That tribal gathering around the fire and the cooking pot has now morphed into just liking to be close to the fridge.

As kitchens become more of a social centre and cooking becomes

Film writer–direc-tor, Nancy Meyers,

helped drive the trend towards dark–kitchens–where–nothing–much–is–cooked. In her 2006 movie, The Holiday, Kate Winslet swapped her little old English cottage for Cameron Diaz’s mansion in L.A. and with the deal got an all–black kitchen, minimal and empty. The

fridge held only soya milk and water. The cupboards held only stomach ant-acids and meals were de-livered. Meyers said later that black was her film’s real eye candy.

Interior designers will tell you that black is es-sential to a neutral pal-

ette, adding drama with-out colour.

A small space becomes a bold design statement in black, and is very sexy.

Black adds mystery to size and shape. Like the little black dress, it hides imperfections and slims down bulk, adding a seamless elegance.

Add gloss to pure black cabinets, like the eye–catching Black Magic (518–7) from PPG Pitts-burgh Paints. It makes the walls dissolve and the kitchen look twice as spa-cious. Lighting and acces-sories become the jewel-lery. Brighten the feel of

floor–to–ceiling high–gloss black cabinets with a slab of white marble, or any light counter and backsplash.

Black kitchens are not only big–city chic. Dark country kitchens are calming and work well with every kind and col-our of wood. When walls and cabinetry are dark, the view outside will glow like a back–lit projection. If the colour is uniform, the appliances disappear, it all reads as one. An-tique utensils and colour-ful pottery – even fruits, vegetables and flowers – become bold features.

Try painting over tired and dated wooden cab-

inets with dusty black, the colour of cast iron. An elegant choice in a low sheen is Knight’s Armour (PPG Pittsburgh Paints, 518–6). Add knobs, hinges and faucets in black for an instant update. If you’re daring, a beautiful en-gineered stone sink, plus black laminate counter-tops and backsplash com-plete the look. Take a look at the Silgranit ‘Anthracite’ sink by Blanco.

If the kitchen opens onto the living room, then lighting is import-ant. Spot–lighting and dimmers let the kitchen disappear into the back-ground so the colourful objects stand out like mu-

seum or gallery pieces. Even a white kitchen

can use a hit of black. Can-adian homeowner, Eliza-beth Frise, had what she considered an ordinary kitchen with lots of white cabinetry and a dark gran-ite counter. When brown–black walls were recom-mended, she resisted, but took the plunge with Black Elegance (PPG Pittsburgh Paints, 531–7). “I don’t know if it looks Paris or New York, but I’m thrilled,” she says. “The colour upgrades are everything. It looks classi-er, dramatic and exciting – and that’s not bad, for a gallon of paint.”
