Working together during 2018, we achieved some truly inspiring outcomes both in our home city of Brisbane, as well as nationally, through the market-leading sustainability events, initiatives and programs that we are involved in. Through this annual review, I hope you will join me in celebrating the many successes of the past year and acknowledging the efforts of our stakeholders and supporters.

It is incredibly encouraging to see the sustainability message now resonating with people from all walks of life, and across a very diverse range of organisations. We continue to realise audience growth for our community communication platforms such as Live for Less, record breaking attendance at events such as Green Heart Fair, and high levels of engagement and real investment from our corporate and government partners.

The year ahead will see continued community, government and private sector focus on the key issues impacting the sustainability of our cities. Government policy priorities will continue to rapidly evolve and CitySmart will continue to support the market-place in adapting to change. Waste management, climate and flood resilience, greenhouse emissions management, transport and energy use remain high priority areas for CitySmart into 2019.

I thank you for the support you have shown us over the past year and I look forward to working with you through 2019.

Waste

Waste Stations We love educating people on waste. We always have recycling stations located at our events as well as organic waste collection bins to ensure food scraps don’t end up in landfill.

Reduce We aim to reduce the amount of waste created at events through the following initiatives:

• Ban on the sale of single use plastic water bottles

• Hydration stations for refilling reusable water bottles

• Ban on plastic bags and plastic straws

• Discounts from coffee vendors for customers with reusable coffee cups

• Using items that have been purchased second-hand or from upcycled materials

Our Vendors• Source their products locally where possible

• Use serveware that is recyclable or compostable

• Aren’t allowed to sell plastic bottled water

• Aren’t allowed to use plastic straws

• We only work with food vendors who practice sustainability in their business. For example:

• Recycling their cooking oil

• Composting all food waste

• Using no chemicals or artificial colours and flavours

EventsWe help brands connect, engage and educate their target audience on their sustainability goals.

Our events are a crucial part of CitySmart’s larger mission to help the community, industry and government drive greater sustainability outcomes for cities and regions with both environmental and economic benefits.

How do we create successful events?

In 2018 CitySmart developed and staged a transport expo showcasing low cost and sustainable transport options. Held in conjunction with the Green Heart Fairs, the expo featured a combination of industry experts and suppliers sharing their products, knowledge and solutions along with product displays, test drives and demonstrations.

With ever-increasing transport options, consumers are often confused as to what are the best choices for them and their families. This created an opportunity for CitySmart to develop a one-stop-shop event for people to road-test new technologies and discover the most cost-effective and sustainable ways to get from A to B.

Move For Less helps the audience better understand:

The greatly reduced fuel consumption offered by newer petrol/diesel vehicles

The growing world of electric/battery powered cars (including hybrids) and the costs, benefits and ease to charge and operate

The amazing world of new transport options for non-car drivers such as electric bikes, scooters and electric skateboards

Reduce Your Juice Reduce Your Juice helps households save money on their energy bills. It transforms the traditional approach to behaviour change into a fun, interactive experience that helps change household energy habits.

22

Reduce Your Juice uses a combination of fun games, digital messages, activities and rewards to help participants reduce their energy usage. The program is delivered using digital media including a mobile app, emails, social media and SMS.

Participants download an app via the Google Play or Apple App store and then play three different mini-games over six weeks. Each mini-game has a different theme related to reducing energy costs in the home.

• Targeted 1800 Brisbane based AGL customers

• Empowered residents to take control of their electricity use via the gamified, educational program

• Results: average of a 14% energy bill reduction for the first quarter post program

Energy Savvy Families Electricity consumption and residential cost is complex and interest in understanding the details of it is low in most Australian households. For the vulnerable and many in regional Queensland, customers have low motivation to change their household rituals and routines that would result in lower electricity bills.

The Queensland Government has partnered with CitySmart, Ergon Energy Retail and Queensland Council of Social Service to bring the Energy Savvy Families Program (ESFP) to selected households based in Cairns, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and Townsville.

The program is being deployed over a 24-month period and commenced in September 2018. It is designed using a bundle of solutions that combined will help Queensland residents improve their understanding of their energy use and the ways they can manage their electricity bills, with the ultimate goal of reducing their bill costs long-term.

Participants have access to:

Summer Saver Research ProgramCitySmart was commissioned to produce a report on behalf of Victoria’s CitiPower/Powercor, United Energy, and RACV to help with the design of consumer-centric programs to manage electricity demand in the summer months.

This research will help the energy industry and policymakers understand how different households think, feel, and act with regards to electricity usage during peak times. By understanding different load profiles and household segments, networks can create programs that are more efficient and effective. Consumers will be empowered to play a part in ensuring a stable and sustainable electricity supply, while also saving money on their bills.

Citysmart is now looking at how the learnings of electricity behaviour change at the household level can be applied to the water industry.

Flood Resilient Homes ProgramThe Flood Resilient Homes Program is a new initiative of Brisbane City Council, delivered in partnership with CitySmart. The program is designed to help residents prepare for and recover from overland flow flooding, and is being trialled in locations across the city that have a history of this type of flooding.

Flood-resilient design prepares buildings to withstand and recover from overland flow flooding events, while supporting everyday liveability and quality of life. Flood-resilient design enables home owners and residents to safely store belongings prior to a flood event, and easily clean, repair and quickly move back in after such an event with minimal long-term disruption
