WASHINGTON — The InternalRevenue Service opens the 2012tax filing season by announcingthat taxpayers have until April 17to file their tax returns. The IRSencourages taxpayers to e-file asit is the best way to ensure accu-rate tax returns and get fasterrefunds.

The IRS also announced a num-ber of improvements to help makethis tax season easy for taxpay-ers. This includes new navigationfeatures and helpful informationon IRS.gov and a new pilot toallow taxpayers to use interactivevideo to get help with tax issues.

“At the IRS, we’re working hardto make the process of filing yourtaxes as quick and easy as possi-ble,” said IRS Commissioner DougShulman. “Providing quality serv-ice is one of our top priorities. Itnot only reduces the burden ontaxpayers, but also helps in filingan accurate return right from thestart.”

Taxpayers will have until Tues-day, April 17, to file their 2011 taxreturns and pay any tax due be-cause April 15 falls on a Sunday,and Emancipation Day, a holidayobserved in the District of Colum-bia, falls this year on Monday,April 16. According to federal law,

District of Columbia holidays im-pact tax deadlines in the sameway that federal holidays do;therefore, all taxpayers will havetwo extra days to file this year.Taxpayers requesting an exten-sion will have until Oct. 15 to filetheir 2011 tax returns.

The IRS expects to receivemore than 144 million individualtax returns this year, with most ofthose being filed by the April 17deadline.

The IRS will begin accepting e-file and Free File<http://www.irs.gov/efile/index.html?portlet=106> returns on Jan. 17,2012. Additional details about e-fileand Free File will be announcednext week. IRS Free File providesoptions for free brand-name taxsoftware or online fillable formsplus free electronic filing. Every-one can use Free File to prepare afederal tax return. Taxpayers whomake $57,000 or less can choosefrom approximately 20 commercialsoftware providers. There’s no in-come limit for Free File FillableForms, the electronic version ofIRS paper forms, which also in-cludes free e-filing.

The IRS also reminds paid taxreturn preparers they must haveand include a Preparer Tax Identifi-

cation Number (PTIN) on all re-turns they prepare. All PTINs mustbe renewed for 2012. Tax returnpreparers can obtain or renewPTINs online<http://www.irs.gov/ptin>

The IRS continues to focus ontaxpayer service. The best way fortaxpayers to get answers to theirquestions is by visiting the IRSwebsite at IRS.gov. The IRS has up-dated the front page of the IRSwebsite <http://www.irs.gov/> tomake it easier for taxpayers to getkey forms, information and file taxreturns. The front page also haslinks to taxpayer-friendly videos onthe IRS YouTube channel. More im-provements are planned forIRS.gov in the months ahead.

Last year, the IRS unveiledIRS2Go, its first smartphone appli-cation that lets taxpayers check onthe status of their tax refund andobtain helpful tax information. TheIRS reminds Apple users that theycan download the free IRS2Go ap-plication by visiting the Apple AppStore and Android users can visitthe Android Marketplace to down-load the free IRS2Go app.

Individuals making $50,000 orless can use the Volunteer IncomeTax Assistance<http://www.irs.gov/individuals/ar-ticle/0,,id=107626,00.html> pro-

gram for free tax preparation and,in many cases, free electronic fil-ing. Individuals age 60 and oldercan take advantage of free taxcounseling and basic income taxpreparation through Tax Counsel-ing for the Elderly. Information onthese programs can be found atIRS.gov.

For tax law questions or ac-count inquiries, taxpayers can alsocall our toll-free number<http://www.irs.gov/help/arti-cle/0,,id=96730,00.html> (7 a.m. to7 p.m. local time) or visit a tax-payer assistance center. Locationsare listed on IRS.gov.

Once taxpayers file their federalreturn, they can track the status oftheir refunds by using the “Where'sMy Refund? <http://www.irs.gov/in-dividuals/article/0,,id=96596,00.html> ” tool, which taxpayers can getto using the IRS2Go phone app orfrom the front page ofwww.IRS.gov. By providing theirTaxpayer Identification Numbers,filing status, and the exact wholedollar amount of their anticipatedrefund taxpayers can generally getinformation about their refund 72hours after the IRS acknowledgesreceipt of their e-filed returns, orthree to four weeks after mailing apaper return.

IRS Opens 2012 Tax Filing SeasonPIERRE — Fourteen South

Dakota libraries were accred-ited by the South Dakota StateLibrary in 2011, under a newsystem of tiered accreditation.This is the second year the newsystem of accreditation hasbeen in place. The librarieswere recognized during theState Library Board meetingtoday.

Public libraries are accred-ited at one of three levels: Es-sential, Enhanced orExemplary. Accreditation at theEssential level means a librarysatisfactorily provides the basicservices required by state lawand federal guidelines. Eachsubsequent level of accredita-tion builds on the previouslevel with additional indicatorsthat libraries must meet. Exem-plary is the highest level ofservice.

Libraries are evaluated inthe following areas, as outlinedin South Dakota Public Librarystandards: governance, admin-istration, access, collectionsand resources, funding, staffing,

technology, and public rela-tions. The three levels of ac-creditation are based on thenumber of indicators achievedin each of the standards.

“This new system of accredi-tation opens communicationabout what libraries can bedoing and ways to improve,”said South Dakota State Librar-ian Dan Siebersma. “It providesconcrete feedback, so we canbetter support them as theywork toward a higher level ofaccreditation.”
