Fall 2016 Conference!
Our Steering, and Executive Committees of NJ-NY ACRAO have
worked diligently to produce another exciting conference program
covering new and interesting sessions that are full of new information,
and helpful tips that you can put into practice at your institution.
In today’s economy, with tight budgets and busy schedules, our one day
conference is an excellent way to get a full day worth of valuable
professional development, and network with your fellow peers. As
always, your registration includes a continental breakfast, a delicious
lunch, and snacks.

The College Sophomore Experience-Redefining our Focus This session will examine the challenges of sophomore students at a large urban institution after their exposure to a first-year program. Schaller's student development theory will be used to create a framework for understanding the collegiate experience and needs of these students. What are the challenges of students in the second year and how can institutions provide the support to assist with the new demands and expectations? Navigating the World of VA from an Educator’s Perspective…Oy Vey! Join us for a soup to nuts discussion on military culture and what's going on in the world of VA & DOD. Discussions will include recognizing the needs/concerns of military students, best practices, defining military-friendly, the various entitlement programs, recruitment/retention efforts, recent changes, and anything else that relates to the military and its culture. Please bring your questions, as this is an open forum that will develop based on the needs and questions of the crowd! Higher Education Trials and Tribulations
Have you ever thought you should write a book about what happened in your office, because no one would believe it? You will be placed in groups and each group will be given several scenarios that have come across our desk as an Admissions or Registrar professional from real life situations to discuss. As a group you will have five minutes to discuss each scenario which will include “ Can you believe it moments” you will then be asked to provide your outcomes while taking in consideration your campus’s best practices and politics for handling issues. When we share our thoughts and processes with open dialogue we can learn from each other and come away hopefully better prepared to handle the next trial or tribulation.

Choosing a Student Graduation Speaker Join this session to understand how the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School selects student graduation speakers for two annual ceremonies. This selection process involves the entire school community and challenges participants to think critically about the mission of higher education. Session participants will also have a chance to brainstorm what makes a graduation speech effective. Violence Prevention & Response Training for Higher Education Professionals
To adequately prevent and manage violence and the threat of violence in Higher Education, there is a need for the implementation and execution of proactive and ongoing violence prevention efforts. The Violence Prevention Agency will discuss strategies that are designed to prevent, detect, investigate, manage and resolve behavior that has generated concerns for safety and violence.

Academic/Event Scheduling: The Art of Planning
This round-table open discussion will focus on the different scheduling process and procedures that we use to schedule classes and events at our colleges/institutions. Focusing on CollegeNet: 25LIVE (and maybe 2 other types of scheduling systems), we’ll explore: What factors are considered in the semester/yearly scheduling process for bi-annual and annual events? What professional development maybe needed for departments and staff to assist in room scheduling? How to effectively collaborate with Academic departments and Administrative departments on campus?

Going Digital – Rethinking Student Services through Technology: Pros & Cons As Registrar’s offices continue to meet the challenges to maintain accurate and updated records, and collaborate with Academic/Administrative departments to successfully communicate with diverse student populations...we have to continuously rethink how to integrate technology into daily office operations to achieve their goals. This session reviews a year-long strategic/technology plan that was implemented into the Registrar’s office at Pratt Institute in 2015. Discussing the pros and cons of office production, student request, academic and college support services, and Academic/Event room scheduling. Including the implementation of the Colleague Student Planning system, and the use of social media form communications in order to achieve a user-friendly environment. Developing a Communications Plan to boost Enrollment
We shall develop in this course a cyclical communications plan: spanning the social, cultural, academic, and outcomes integration spaces with no end zone. The plan capitalizes on traditional techniques of engaging admitted students as well as innovative multimedia approaches to connecting with applicants and prospects in the enrollment pipeline. We shall talk about showcasing student life and other meaningful campus engagements by employing a variety of online and hybridized interaction platforms; from customized Apps to social media weblogs involving current students, alumni, faculty and administration. The strategy is to offer multimedia snapshots of the social, academic, (where available) athletics and wellness transitions that a new student can look forward to experiencing on campus. We will examine some front-line applications for constructing a virtual community. We shall round up with a corpus of techniques for boosting Enrollment goals on a fitted budget.
