St. Dominic de Guzman, the founder of the Order of Preachers (commonly called the Dominicans) is the saint to whom Our Lady famously appeared and gave the devotion of the Holy Rosary to assist him in combating the Albigensian heresy then wreaking havoc in the Church. This apparition occurred in southern France, in a small, out-of-the-way spot known as Prouilhe in the Languedoc region. When St. Dominic (1170–1221) was labouring without success to convert souls back to the one true faith, Our Lady gave him a powerful weapon, the Angelic Salutation [i.e. the Angel Gabriel’s greeting to the Virgin Mary at the Incarnation], and the pattern in which it should be prayed. To combat the Albigensian heresy (the heresy of the Cathars), which denied the divinity of Christ and the goodness of the created material world, she also gave the rosary “mysteries” which reflected on the Incarnation, Passion, and death of her Son. The words of the Angelic Salutation combined with meditations on the divine mysteries was to be used as a prayer and catechism tool to teach the people the true Christian faith. If St. Dominic would preach her rosary and its meditations on the life of Christ, many souls would be converted from their error and saved through her intercession. The Blessed Virgin said to him: “Wonder not that you have obtained so little fruit by your labours, you have spent them on barren soil, not yet watered with the dew of Divine grace. When God willed to renew the face of the earth, He began by sending down on it the fertilizing rain of the Angelic Salutation. Therefore preach my Psalter composed of 150 Angelic Salutations and 15 Our Fathers, and you will obtain an abundant harvest.” The POPE’s INTENTIONS FOR OCTOBER 2017 Workers and the Unemployed: That all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good. 1 ST October 2017 XXVI Sunday of the Ordinary Time OUR LADY OF LOURDES & St SWITHUN’s CHURCH in SOUTHSEA ROSARY PRAYER DURING OCTOBER 2017 in OUR PARISH IN ENGLISH: From Monday to Saturday after Morning Mass in St Swithun’s church; on Saturdays at 5.30 pm in Our Lady of Lourdes’ church; INTERNATIONAL ROSARY On FRIDAYS at 7.30 pm after Evening Mass in St Swithun’s; IN POLISH: On Tuesdays at 6.30 pm in St Swithun’s church; On Sundays at 5.30pm in St Swithun’s church;

My Dearest Brother and Sister in Christ, my Friend The Rosary is a trademark of Catholic piety. There is something striking in the fact that the Marian apparitions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries repeat the call of the Blessed Mother to frequently pray the Rosary. Saint John Paul II in the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae (2002) refers directly to the Marian apparitions. "There are many indications of how the Blessed Virgin Mary ... also wants to express her motherly concern today," the pope writes. "In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Mother of Christ, in various circumstances, felt in some way its presence and hear its voice to encourage the People of God to this form of contemplative prayer." Pope John Paul II mentioned only two examples of the apparitions, Lourdes and Fatima, as they have exerted and still exert a powerful influence on Christian life. But the call to the Rosary appears also in Gietrzwald (there we will go next year during our ‘Trinity Pilgrimage’ and in other apparitions. The great power of this prayer indicates many saints and popes. Leo XIII was called "Pope of the Rosary". We owe it to him that October is the month of this prayer. Speaking of Marian apparitions, we must remember their nature. Private revelations do not have the same nature as the public Revelation, normative, transmitted by the Bible and the Apostolic Tradition of the Church. Private revelations are investigated by the Church and secular authorities, and on this basis decisions are made on their authenticity. The word 'private' is somewhat misleading because it indicates that revelation reaches individuals, but the message of revelation refers not only to visionaries but to wider societies. Mary's apparitions all over the world do not bring new truths of faith, but are a reminder of some truth previously contained in the Scriptures, or in Tradition. Most often they are the call to conversion and prayer, and there are also some apocalyptic accents, the promise of the ultimate divine justice. The approval of the Church takes different forms. Sometimes it is full acceptance of the content of the revelation and confirmation of the supernatural character. Sometimes, only to say that there is nothing in them that contradicts the doctrine of the Holy Church based on the Scriptures and the Apostolic Tradition. Sometimes we have to do with the recognition of the place of worship or the elevation of the church of the visionary. Sometimes - just like in Medjugorje, the Church waits patiently with the final decision to complete the apparitions. It is significant that in many Marian apparitions

the call to praying the rosary is repeated. I will mention only the most important, the most famous. In Lourdes (1858) Mary introduced herself with the words - 'I am the Immaculate Conception'. During the first appearance, Mary recited the Rosary with Bernadette. The Blessed Mother moved silently the beads of her rosary and said loudly only: 'Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit ...' The curious fact is that Mary called for everyone to pray the Rosary. In Gietrzwałd (1877, Poland) Mary called on several times - 'Strictly pray the rosary', 'every day'. At one of the conversations with the teenage visionary Mary, pointed out that 'it is necessary to first attend Mass and then pray the Rosary because the Holy Mass is more important than the Rosary.' The strongest request for the Rosary was heard in Fatima (1917). Mary repeated several times to the shepherds - 'pray the Rosary every day'. The intention of this prayer was to facilitate peace in the world and the end of the First World War. Mary said in Fatima: 'I am the Mother of the Rosary.' The Marian apparitions of Akita, Japan (1973) are less well known. In essence, the message from Akita resembles Fatima. In Akita, there is even more powerful call to do penance, for the sacrifice of suffering for sinners and the call to prayer of the Rosary. The Rosary was called there by Mary - "the only weapon that will stay for us". There was also a special intention of prayer: 'On the Rosary pray for the pope, the bishops, the priests.' Why? Mary said that 'the action of Satan will permeate even the Church so much that you will be able to see cardinals opposed to other cardinals and bishops acting against other bishops'. We can point to many, many other private revelations in which the Rosary appears. Visionaries are generally people who say this prayer. If we visit any Sanctuary of Mary, most pilgrims pray there on the Rosary. As I mentioned in the beginning, Pope Leo XIII was named 'Pope of the Rosary', who was a successor of St Peter between 1978 and 1903. He was a prominent shepherd who introduced the Apostolic Church into the twentieth century. Pope Leo XIII established the month of the Holy Rosary in October. The Pope dedicated this prayer as many as 16 documents: 11 Encyclicals, one Apostolic Constitution and three Apostolic Letters. Also this pope in 1894 introduced a custom of reciting after Mass a prayer to St. Archangel Michael defends himself from the action of Satan. Pope Leo XIII has repeatedly pointed out the Rosary as the most effective weapon in

spiritual struggles, as giving faithful miraculous strengthening of faith, defending from error, and comforting the soul, and praying godly can serve the whole of society. Also worth mentioning are other successors of St. Peter. Certainly belongs to this group St Pope Pius V, who lived for several centuries before Pope Leo XIII. It was he who approved this form of prayer that we know to date. During his pontificate, there was a great sea battle at Lepanto on the Greek coast, October 7, 1571. The united Christian fleet defeated the Turkish fleet that day. Pope Pius V appealed for to pray the Rosary for the purpose of halting the Islamization of Europe. The threat was real. The Sultan Selim II threatened that he would change St Peter’s Basilica into stables for his horses. After the victory of the Christian army, Pius V attributed it to Mary's intercession and established the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7th. Pope St John Paul II had no doubt to the importance of the Rosary. He wrote: 'The history of the Holy Rosary shows how this prayer was used when the Holy Church was experiencing difficult times because of the spread of heresy. Today we face new challenges. Why not take into hand the rosary beads with the faith of those who were before us? The Rosary retains all its power and remains an indispensable tool in the pastoral care of every good preacher of the Gospel.' This further 'rosary pope’ that is John Paul II, wrote the synthesis of the teaching of the Holy Church on the Holy Rosary. He also proclaimed in 2002 the 'Year of the Holy Rosary' and introduced five new Mysteries of the Rosary - Mysteries of the Light. John Paul II said: 'The Rosary is a prayer I have loved so much. A wonderful prayer! Strange in its simplicity and depth at the same time '. There are many other popes who wrote about the Rosary and encouraged them to deny it. The Marian apparitions, the rosary popes ... There are also Saints who found their way to prayer of the Rosary and highly recommend it to others. We can create an entire list of holy apostles of the Holy Rosary. Pope John Paul II mentioned especially St Louis Grignion de Montfort, St Father Pio, but he paid special attention to the charism of Blessed Bartholomew Longo, the founder of the sanctuary in Pompeii, the so-called Pompeii Novena. This is a very colourful character. He came from a Catholic family in the south of Italy, but while studying law in Naples his faith was broken. He was influenced by newly-thinking ideas and began to deal with the occult. He took so much evil that he became a priest of the satanic sect. For a year and a half he organized spiritualist seances and took part in anti-

popes speeches initiated by Freemasonry. He began to reveal the symptoms of demonic possession. His conversion was a long way, and the effects of the ancient occult relationship were still reflected in him. The Rosary was a salvation. Longo clung to the sentence he heard he believed from Mary: 'He who promotes the Rosary will be saved.' He became the apostle of the Rosary on the volcanoes of Mount Vesuvius. He walked from house to house, from hut to hut, taught prayers and distributed rosaries. He organized parish missions and founded the Brotherhood of the Rosary. He was the initiator and builder of the shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii and at the same time he developed social, educational, charitable and publishing activities. In all this, Pope Leo XIII was strongly supported him. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1980. Pope John Paul II, at the end of his Letter on the Holy Rosary, quotes the beautiful prayer of Blessed Bartholomew Longo: "Blessed Rosary of Mary, sweet chain which unites us to God, bond of love which unites us to angels, tower of salvation against the assaults of Hell, safe port in our universal shipwreck, we will never abandon you. You will be our comfort in the hour of death: yours our final kiss as life ebbs away. And the last word from our lips will be your sweet name, O Queen of the Rosary of Pompeii, O dearest Mother, O Refuge of Sinners, O Sovereign Consoler of the Afflicted. May you be everywhere blessed, today and always, on earth and in heaven.’ Being united with God and rescuing the heathen with evil - these two dimensions of this 'sweet chain'. Let's not let him out of our hands, let us pray as Mary, popes, and saints asked us. Let us pray our ‘sweet chain’ of life, for the Church, the Nation, Europe and the whole world. With love, friendship and prayers – Fr Marcin

Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Dear Friends: I would like to share with You some

things which are about our Parish and for our Parish. Our Bishop Philip in the last Pastoral Letter

to us, last weekend asked us to be ‘CAN-DO’ Christians. I’m absolutely sure, that You have

noticed how many things already happen in our Parish to help in our spiritual grow to love God

more and more in His Word to us, in His Sacraments for us

(which is His real presence among us). We also go out to

meet those who still searching for God, or who were not so

lucky to have personal contact with Jesus Christ. One of the

most important ways of our evangelization ourselves and all

those somewhere… is our Newsletter, which is already very

attractive to many. We print 300 copies every weekend,

You take a lot of copies for your friends and family members

which is absolutely wonderful. During the week another 50-

60 copies of the Newsletter are taken by the visitors of our

churches. Our Newsletter has now more pages to fulfil a

mission. Some of You have asked me about this advert

which is published in our Newsletter once of month, so I

have decided to explain to You the situation.

Because we print the Newsletter in colour to be more attractive and clear, it costs our Parish

much, much more, and it really worry us. So, to cover the costs we did find now only one sponsor,

who helps a little bit with it. Also, I have decided this year to cover from my pocket the costs of

the candles for the altar, Mass’ wine, priest’s hosts and communicants for the Mass. I would like to

ask You, if this is only possible to increase your Sunday offertory. If each of us add extra 70pp to

our Sunday collection it will really sort out our problem with this way of evangelization. Only, if

You can, I beg You, please help. I’m already very, very grateful for any penny and any effort to

help to support our - hopefully, good Pastoral work.

Another thing which I would like to announce here is another connection between Jesus

Christ’s altar and our daily life. As You know,

during the weekdays I try to show all situations

from the Gospel, where Jesus Christ was sitting at

the table, and how does it help to understand His

teaching about the table at our homes, flats

toward the table at the church - which is the altar

of the Holy Sacrifice. You can also find a special

table after 10.15am Sunday Mass in the church

hall (when there is no First Communion session),

in which You can always seat and talk with me

about the things of our faith which confuse You,

which You can’t understand.

Today, I would like to start another Pastoral

Work, which will be a connection between Jesus

Christ’s altar and our home’s tables - if You are

sick, elderly or housebound, or You have any

family members or friends who are in such a state,

I will be very happy to celebrate Holy Mass at

their homes, flats if they only wish. Please, let me

know and we will organize everything. The very

first Mass at home of the sick will take place this

coming Saturday at 12noon. Thanksgiving for the

invitation and all the Family, who care of it and

they going to be present there.

And finally, for this time. Our collections of the food, or other things and donations for Life

House on the First Weekends of the Month will stop from November. We still receive the message

that this place is full of this and that things, so we have decided to start to help those in the streets

who are in need directly from our Parish. The group of people from our church will go to the streets

to meet all those, who are in a need, in which we can help and we will meet them, offer them the

concrete things which they need, we’ll take them for a shopping or - if necessary - we’ll organize

B&B place to have a good rest for a night if they are homeless. So, we will inform You about the

things which they tell us they need the most for their daily life, and we will gather them on the

first weekend of November to share, to help. It will be our next outside ministry to go to the streets

and face Jesus Christ in those who are in trouble. I hope You will support this ministry. Thank

You for all the ways You make the life and ministry of our Parish possible.

Please accompany children to the toilet: It is essential that a parent or responsible adult accompany any children who leave church to go to the toilet during Mass. The route to the toilet at St Swithun's is open to both Waverley Road and the car park and any member of the public could be walking through at any time. As the church hall is left open during Sunday Mass with no-one on the door, it is also possible for members of the public to enter the hall. For the safety of your children, please accompany them to the toilet.

Polish organizers hope 1 million Catholics pray rosary Organizers are hoping up to a million people will join a

mass rosary on Poland's border on October 7 to mark the end

of the Fatima centenary and pray for the world's salvation.

Poland's bishops have urged Catholics to join the rosary

which marks the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary and the

anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, where "the

Christian fleet" saved Europe from "Islamization", the Catholic

Herald reported.

"We believe that if the rosary is prayed by about a million

Poles along the borders of the country, it may not only change

the course of events but open hearts of our compatriots to the

grace of God,” the organizers say on their website.

The initiative has been backed by the Polish Bishops' Conference which has encouraged Catholics

to say the rosary in their homes if they can't be present at the border event.

“Families may pray in their homes, the sick in hospitals, and parish communities in their churches,”

they said.

"A hundred years ago, Mary gave these three Portuguese children a message of salvation: repent,

give reparation for sins against my Immaculate Heart and pray the rosary,” the bishops added.

We also would like to invite all Polish people to come to St Swithun’s church this Saturday 7th

October, at 1pm to connect with this special event. If anyone from other nationalities would like to join

us, ALL ARE VERY WELCOME!!!!

Our ‘Parish Cinema’ invites all of us for a show of the next film: on Friday 6TH October 8.10pm in St Swithun’s church hall - 113 minutes

A Christian college freshman (Shane Harper) and his atheist philosophy professor

(Kevin Sorbo) debate the existence of God. To pass the course, Josh Wheaton must

prove to the class that God is alive. Putting his relationships and his future on the

line, will Josh be able to support his beliefs? Court is now in session!
