KwaDukuza citizens alleviate drought

By Xpress Reporter

ue to the efforts from various professionals Dand willing community

members, KwaDukuza got water within a week… nay days.

During the three week dry spell f e l t a r o u n d t h e m o s t o f KwaDukuza, a long standing concerned citizen and professional decided to take action.

He was without water for several days and contacted his friend as he was informed that he knew of a party who was delivering water in tanks to those who required it.

“While discussing the water issue with my friend, he informed me that he had learnt from Vim of Ilembe that as a result of sand mining, there were approximately seven dams between Glendale and Mvoti Water Works which was impeding the flow of the river and hence contributing to the water crisis. I contacted Vim and he confirmed this.”

It is alleged that Ilembe was lacking funds and could not attempt the “Dam Breaking” operations.

An Ilembe official did attempt to

DAM BREAKING: The heavy artillery that was in action in the Glendale area were excavators cleared boulders and rocks

ask sand miners to break up the dams, but this merely resulted in him getting abused. A court order came into effect stopping sand mining activities until the end of the drought.

Folks, the Xpress Times was there on the fateful Saturday (10 November 2015) when the Ilembe Mayor himself, the Honourable Mayor, Councillor Welcome Ndabe saw the vile acts of dam blockading and sand mining.

Within a matter of days, the professional called a local lad, Amaresan Moodley to enquire whether he knew of anyone who w o u l d b e p r e p a r e d t o render assistance in the form of an e x c a v a t o r i n order to break up t h e d a m s . Moodley said that the process would be costly and take days to c o m p l e t e . Moodley then contac ted Mr

Nilesh Singh who said he would render assistance at no charge.

Nilesh sent an excavator on site on Monday, 16th N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 5 , a n d Amaresan managed to secure further excavators from Danco Transport of KwaDukuza. Amaresan p a r t i c u l a r l y w o r k e d t i r e l e s s l y a n d b y Wednesday, 18th November 2015, with the assistance of certain sand miners as well, the dams were broken up,

Councillor (Cllr) Ricardo Mthembu, KwaDukuza

Mayoral Imbizo at Manor

ANSWERS PLEASE: Residents at the Stanger Manor Community Hall on Wednesday

DROUGHT BUSTING: From left: Elias Bhengu, Cllrs: Thulani Khuluse, Mayor Ricardo Mthembu and Madhun Sobram Sing (Ward 17 councillor)

Municipality (KDM) Mayor, was pleasantly surprised at the response to the Mayoral Izimbizo held at the Stanger

Manor Hall on Wed, 11 November 2015.

C o u n c i l l o r T h u l a n i Khuluse, KDM House

Speaker; who was the p r o g r a m m e d i r e c t o r , announced that it was rare sight to have a huge turnout at a meeting in Ward 17 and praised the residents for taking an interest in their ward. A number of issues were outlined. The first one being the critical issue of the drought and the current water problems experienced in KwaDukuza. Khuluse then handed the floor over to Elias Bhengu, a representative from the Ilembe District Municipality who are the service providers for water and sanitation.

Bhengu then outlined in quite a lengthy report the current status of the drought and the problems facing the community.

H e i n c l u d e d t h e investigation and possibility o f e s t a b l i s h i n g m o r e boreholes to ease the burden experienced currently as the rivers in KwaZulu-Natal w e r e d r y i n g u p . H e mentioned that water tankers were a quick solution but a more sustainable answer was being sought.

A resident of Stanger Manor, Amrasen Moodley, added that he, together with a team of volunteers, had inspected the Umvot River

with the Ilembe Mayor, Councillor Welcome Mdabe and discovered that certain farmers had created dams that restricted the flow of water to KwaDukuza.

They also discovered that i l l e g a l s a n d m i n i n goperations had slowed the flow and in certain cases, diverted the flow of water. The team had however spent much resources in ensuring an unrestricted flow of water t o K w a D u k u z a . H eguaranteed people that water would be back to normal by the weekend.

Moodley then promised the residents a full report at a planned meeting by residents to deal with the water crisis the following day. A resident who did not want to be named stated that he found this weird that this was the platform for residents to attend and ask questions and gain responses from those who are responsible yet people were choosing to attend a meeting called up by a few people who would not be able to answer questions and provide responses to the queries of the community.

Due to time constraints the meeting was then postponed and will reconvene in two weeks time.

Municipality got bailed out of trouble, free of charge, Ilembe failed its citizens after the Mayor himself promised that his team would attend to water leakages when reported to Ilembe House. Again, Ilembe did not pay for the dam breaking!

If the Facebook group / forum Kwadukuza - ILEMBE Water Crisis reporting is anything to go by, then the local residents want to see an end to Ilembe and are accusing them of negligence, corruption and everything but the kitchen sink.

Queue Lindley Street, Seaview Drive Mahatma Gandhi Street, Indian Village and Hill Crescent where residents phoned the Call Centre multiple times because water leaks were not attended to for days.

Ilembe's dismal response to water leaks

REAL SEAVIEW: The river of drinking water cascading down Seaview Road despite residents making numerous phone calls to Ilembe House

Spar Win Big Competition

The Xpress Times called five times, with others calling us because they received no joy from Ilembe House.

From this reporter's perspective, the Muslim community need to be thanked for rallying together and serving mankind by going the extra mile and reaching out to the destitute and indigent, which in all honesty was you and I. Ilembe tankers were not supplemented by a local businessman for free but was hired for thousands of rands a day.

Of concern is the discovery that Umgeni Water runs Mvoti Water Works and charges Ilembe R6-00 per kilolitre. At the required rate of 18 million litres per day, this translates to a monthly payment of R3 240 000-00 to Umgeni Water. In addition, Umgeni Water uses Ilembe personnel and equipment. This clearly does not make any sense and warrants urgent investigation.

FOUNTAIN OF MAYHEM: This fountain at the Lindley / Mahatma Gandhi Street intersection leaked on and off for almost three days. The Xpress

Times phoned Ilembe Call Centre five times about this on day one

At a well attended meeting at S t a n g e r M a n o r H a l l o n Wednesday residents put water crisis at the top of the agenda. The Mayors Imbizo was a joint meeting with KDM and Ilembe, attended by the KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu, Speaker of council Councillor (Cllr) Thulani Khuluse and officials from both municipalities to address the concerns of the residents.

Elias Bhengu, director at Ilembe, gave an overview of the water challenges, financial constraints, short, medium and long term solutions. Despite some relief, residents are warned not to take for GRANTED the supply of water as it is still early stages with the prolonged drought which could take us well into the second

In the wake of the tragedy in Gings whereby a policeman was killed last week Monday, law enforcement agencies made a breakthrough on Friday, 20 November at 11:30am at Seven Oaks in Greytown. (Cop slain in Gings Xpress Times 20-11-2015).

According to Major Thulani Zwane of SAPS KZN Media Centre, the suspects are involved in the police attacks and robberies reported especially in the North Coast areas.

“The members spotted four suspect's vehicles fitting the description of the suspects involved in the robbery. When trying to stop them, the shooting ensued and the members re ta l i a ted , f a ta l ly

A 16-year-old boy has tragically passed away and 15 others were injured after being struck by lightning in Maphumulo last week.

It is alleged that a rondavel (hut) with a thatch roof had been struck by lightning, with a group of men inside.

A c c o r d i n g t o K Z N E M S spokesperson, Robert McKenzie, paramedics were called to the

COUNCILLORS CORNER

“Water crisis at the top of the agenda”Suspected cop killers “fatally wounded”

wounding six suspects. Threesuspects sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital under police guard,” he said.

The Pietermaritzburg (PMB) Task force, PMB Crime Intelligence, Durban K9 Unit, PMB Highway Patrol, PMB Flying Squad and PMB Hawks were following information about a group of armed males who were suspected to be involved in the robbery that took place at Newcastle.

“Three rifles and two hand guns were recovered from the suspects. Two vehicles were recovered at thescene and another was found abandoned near Pinetown area. The manhunt for the fleeing suspects who fled in the fourth vehicle is ongoing,” said Zwane.

half of next year.In the interim, most parts of

KwaDukuza enjoyed piped water since Wednesday after almost a month long battle. The measures put in place are water tankers. Although regular supply cannot be guaranteed , addi t ional boreholes to augment the current system (Tugela Bulk Water Scheme) hopefully could be operational in the first half of next year with desalination in the long term.

Elias warned private tanker companies who were selling water to residents to be careful because Ilembe was not sure of the source of water they collected from - it could be harmful , however if they collected from Ilembe borehole the water is free at Haysom Road. Theft of cables was also causing delay in supplies of water as raised by Pravind Singh from Tambuti. Elias countered and said it was a challenge and also a national problem.

The residents were very understanding of the magnitude of the problem and wanted better planning and some level of service. Many do not have any alternative BUT rely on the tanker service. While we enjoy the piped water for NOW it gives us time to prepare and better equip ourselves

to deal with crisis as they occur. Like the MEC- Nomusa Dube

Ncube for local government in KZN put it nicely on the drought situation: “It is not because of mayors or councillors. It is because we have no rain.”

The MEC further said in Ilembe, two mills have not opened as the drought impacted on the sugar industry and urged residents to cut water consumption.

Some of the other challenges in the ward raised was water pipe replacement by Ilembe that have caused road damages including driveways. According to action plan the roads will be tarred by early December before the company closes for the festive period. However complaints should be in lodged immediately at their office opposite Engen Garage.

Always striving to serve you to the best of my ability and keeping you updated of all the happenings in the ward consistently since 2011.

near the Qavavu Primary inMaphumulo and they found that a large group of people had been struck by lightning.”

“Sixteen men were struck by lightning and sadly one man passed away. Five were in a seriouscondition and 10 of the patients were treated for minor injuries,” said McKenzie.

Drug Lords beware the old boys are out to get youBy Xpress Reporter

Law enforcement f rom KwaDukuza together with its multi-disciplinary approach during the entire Friday, swept the entire town; including residential areas which resulted in drug confiscations, arrests and more.

The Umhla l i K9 un i t , KwaDukuza FCS and KDM also assisted in netting suppliers and dealers in marquee hotspots within the heart of the central business district (CBD).

It must be known that in almost every street corner, moral decay in the form of drugs and illegal sex workers, in

KwaDukuza has become a norm.

Five whoonga dealers were taken in for a total of 261 straws among them. Each straw sells at approximately R30.00 each which equals R7830.00 taken off the streets, saving families from having to worry that their food off the stove, or clothes taken off the line, or valuables being will not be sold to feed the destructive habit by their teenage son, daughter or family member. A win or a W for morality and the throttling of drug scum strengthened.

The Nandos / Checkers area yielded another dealer who was

caught for 40 straws of whoonga. The officers were also happy to report an infamous Sunny Park drug dealer getting arrested. Other statist ics involved the ongoing war against pirate DVD (video and/or audio media) increasing by four in the arrests column. One dealer was nabbed for 21 pieces of rock cocaine at R60-00 each which equals R1260 as well as three mandrax tablets. Also 3 blocks rock cocaine, 17 pieces rock cocaine and 15 m a n d r a x t a b l e t s w e r e confiscated from another dealer.

This drug operation is an ongoing initiative that seeks to

crush drug dealers and rampant crime within a localized area KwaDukuza. Police visibility will be seen with officers on foot patrol, vehicles, bikes and more at this time of the year and beyond.

A group of police officers in K w a D u k u z a h a v e n o w established a continued drug operation on a day to day basis. This group of officers are encouraging the public to come forward and report drug dealing and illegal activities in the area. Contact Captain Manivasen Perumal and Warrant Officer Ramprotal at the KwaDukuza SAPS.

The community of KwaDukuza and its surrounds are still reeling in shock after the untimely passing away of Maduray Naidu, known affectionately as Deva on Sunday, 22 November 2015.

Naidu was a highly decorated police officer who also had a heart as big as the Milky Way in terms of his humanitarian work goes.

The Greytown born Naidu played a major role in the social and moral wellbeing of the community and touched many lives. He was a founder member of the Real Celtic Football Club.

He was stationed at the KwaDukuza SAPS and was known for his excellence in his efficient and effective role in roadblocks. He was then elevated

to role of Station Commissioner in Sundumbili for a decade and in Actonville (Gauteng) where he retired as Superintendant.

Retirement freed Naidu in his pursuit to help the community which he shone brightly by being highly active with the Dolphin Coast Hospice Association (DCHA) for many years as its secretary and the Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza serving as its Vice President. He served both organisations for many… many years.

His wife described him as a man of hav ing unques t ionab le integrity, endearing humility, admirable humbleness and innate selflessness.

“Deva put the needs of the sick,

GREAT MAN: The late Deva Naidu who was near and dear to the community of KwaDukuza through the Dolphin Coast Hospice

Association and the Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza

indigent and needy first and he could not see his fellow human beings suffering,” she said.

He leaves behind his wife Jenny Naidu, mother-in-law, six children and seven grandchildren.

His funeral was held at the Stanger Siva Sungum Hall on Monday, 23 November 2015.

female alleges she used the toilet outside her house at 06:30am. A youth whom she had seen the previous day grabbed her, threatened her with a broken bottle and forced her back into the toilet. He allegedly threatened her, stuffed her mouth with her shirt and raped her. He then fled and she reported the matter to her mother. Later that morning, community members arrested a 23-year-old Mozambican with a very peculiar name. He has a completely different version to the victim which is under investigation. He was remanded in custody pending a bail investigation.

surely mankind has lost his moral compass. David Makhatini of Melville alleges that he received a call informing him that the church has been broken into and chairs, wire, blankets and a clock were stolen. School's barely outWhat can one expect of learners these days.

Last Friday at 12:00 midday, Alpha Security officers spotted activity in the Kearsney sugarcane field. On approaching the spot, three youths fled and two were apprehended. The youths had cut off about 20 metres of copper cable from a Telkom line with hacksaws. Qwabe High School learners, Sphamandla Dladla (21), a Grade 10 pupil, and his 17-year-old Grade 11 fellow learner are due back at court this week to seek bail. Their three friends are still at large.

Justice for allBush mechanic France Masinga was

accused of theft by three men. They alleged he stole a part from a friend's vehicle and phoned him at about 11pm to discuss the matter. As he arrived, the trio began beating him up. They bundled him into their vehicle and drove to a bridge where they threatened to throw him over. He still denied any knowledge and the beating continued. He attempted to flee but they caught him and beat him up yet again. During this attack, cash of R2000 and a cellphone was taken from him. He was finally rescued by two men at 03:00am. Bonginkosi Nkwanyana (27), Justice Nyanda (23) and Emmanuel Nkwanyana (22) will seek bail this week on a charge of attempted murder and robbery.

By Xpress ReporterWorld AIDS Day is commemorated

each year on the 1st of December and is an opportunity for all communities to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV and remember those who have died.

The United Nations UNAIDS World,

World AIDS Day

SOLIDARITY: Wearing a red ribbon is a simple way to show your support

AIDS Day theme for 2011 to 2015 was: “Getting to Zero”.

As of 2013, AIDS has killed more than 36 million people worldwide (1981-2012), and an estimated 35.3 million people are living with HIV, making it one of the most important global public health issues in recorded history. Despite recent improved access to antiretroviral treatment in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claims an estimated 2 million lives each year, of which about 270,000 are children.

This campaign provides an opportunity to draw attention to the HIV epidemic around the world. Many people choose to organise an event on or around December 1st, to raise awareness of HIV, to remember loved ones who have died, to show solidarity with people living with HIV, to celebrate survival and health, and to raise money for HIV and related causes. For many people the day is associated with the red ribbon, an instantly recognisable symbol.

By Xpress ReporterA dangerous trend has gripped

Lindley Street and its surrounds. The emergence of two women going up to innocent men claiming that the men owe them R20.00 had been sporadic but has now proven embarrassing.

We witnessed the act outside a local pool hall and in front of the Xpress Times office. We were inundated with visits from men who asked the

publication to expose these ladies, who were also identified as being high on whoonga.

The modus operandi involves them going up to an innocent man in the CBD in front of people and then saying “where is my money.” The men that have come forward represent all South African ethnicities. Please beware, snap pictures of them and report to the KwaDukuza SAPS

KWADUKUZA MUNICIPALITY

Notice is hereby given of the KwaDukuza Municipality's intention to solicit views of the KwaDukuza communities, businesses, community-based organisations, non-governmental organisations, organised labour and other interested or affected persons in accordance with section 21(A) of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (hereafter the “MSA”).

KwaDukuza Municipality is in the process of compiling a feasibility study to assess the viability of contracting with private sector entities for the purposes of waste collection, processing and management within its municipal area of jurisdiction (“the Project”). The Project entails the possibility of private sector entities managing all operational risks including management of fleet, staff, route planning, service levels etc, and having access to capital to immediately maintain existing service levels and fast track service delivery to areas that are currently not receiving services.

Due to a variety of challenges in relation to

the current waste management model that the Municipality is utilising, including spatial, organisational and budgetary model, the Municipality decided to explore the possibility of undertaking this Project on a Public Private Partnership (“PPP”) basis with private sector partners. In this regard, a feasibility study was commissioned and its findings and recommendations are being considered by the KwaDukuza Municipal Council.

As required by law, the KwaDukuza Municipality is making the contents of the study available to the public in an attempt to solicit views and comments, which will then be considered as part of the development of the feasibility study. Copies of the study can be accesses from the Municipality's official website: www.kwadukuza.gov.za and from the following Municipal buildings with effect from 25 November 2015:1. Darnall Library2. Stanger Manor library3. Ballito Library4. Lavoire Pierre Building

5. Kwadukuza Library6. Ballito Offices(temporarily located at Salt rock)7. Traffic Department Office

Written comments on this matter can be submitted on or before 14 March 2016, addressed for the attention of the Director Special Projects, Mr. Siyabonga Khanyile, via email [email protected] or telephonically on 032 437 5087.

The town of Shakaskraal played host to a significant milestone in the history of the lineage of current day Indians in South Africa on Thursday, 19 November 2015.

The Honourable Deputy Mayor of KwaDukuza, Councillor (Cllr) Dolly Govender along with

The gravesite is special due to its being hallowed ground to the indentured Indian labourers who came from India during the 1860 arrival in KZN.

According to Thols i Mudly, many gravesites on t h e s u g a r e s t a t e s o f KwaZulu-Natal seem to have been forgotten by current generations and the few that have been re-discovered are beginning to form part of the larger narrative of the Indentured Indians.

particular, establishing heritage and to encourage heritage preservation,” she said.

She added that the site may receive heritage status due to the involvement of Amafa and the current advocacy group of descendants.

Indians first arrived in limited numbers in the Cape in 1654, along with other Southeast Asians, as slaves. However, it was not until 1860 that they arrived in Durban with 342 Indians arriving from the Indian city of Madras (now Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu) aboard the Truro on 16 November 1860, with a

Water meter blocks is a virus

Water meter blocks is a virus c r e a t e d b y I l e m b e Municipal i ty and i t i s spreading very fast. After 21 years of democracy with the drought issue that's so bad our rivers are drying and with Ilembe bringing the “water meter blocks” we will all die from thirst as South Africa turns into a desert. I am very saddened by the way Ilembe treats the ratepayers with the issuing of water. Blocking somebody's water meter is totally illegal. Remember, water is a necessity. It violates our human rights. I believe that's not the style of getting the ratepayers to pay their sewer bills. In Darnall and elsewhere, there are many widows, pensioners and these people brought to my notice the way they are treated by Ilembe Municipality with the water crisis. When they go to buy water in shops where Ilembe have pre-paid water machines, it shows you water meter is blocked. I believe this is totally unfair. Don't use the virus block that's going to kill the people and also force them to come to your office and instruct them to pay so much before they “open the block.” I believe the people must pay 30% of the total amount, that's crazy!!! Remember these poor people pay taxi fees to come to your offices. Come on Ilembe, lets be transparent and furthermore it is very sad

when people go to the Ilembe offices the computers are offline. So my question to Ilembe is what happens to the people who don't have water because you “blocked” it? What a shame. People are prepared to pay but in an affordable manner. Therefore I believe how much longer are we going to continue to reward incompetence with multi-million rand payouts? There was one pensioner who has six school-going children who was instructed to pay R1200 to open the block and also been instructed to pay R930-00 monthly over 3 months until she settles her account of R4000. MR Mayor, imagine you are in this pensioner's shoes, how would you budget yourself living with a grant of R1400? I say live and let live. What really angers me? I want to know what present councilors are doing to cure this virus of blocked meters. The remedy to the virus of blocked meters, I l e m b e m u s t l o o k a t affordability. Problem solved. Many told me for this reason they will not vote in next year's local government elections.

God bless South Africa.

Thanking all that contributed

To the teams of people that have assisted in distributing water to the various areas we say Thank You and may your reward be granted by the Almighty only. Your tireless efforts and exceptional dedication to the greater good of mankind teaches us that in times of need there are human beings who will rise above politicking, race and religion and serve those who need it most.

To the teams who were involved in opening dams along the rivers we salute you. To the companies and individuals who raped our ecosystem for their financial gain to the detriment of our long term sustainability we say to you that you know who you are and your fate will catch up to you...

The fight for sustainable water for our town is not over. Good industry practices need to be implemented and proper management of our resources need to be established.

We're not out of the woods at

all and we can each play a part in conserving as much as we can.

Let us hope for a brighter tomorrow.

“Ilembe Municipality poor services”

I, Abrahm Ndaba, a leader of National Freedom Party (NFP) and a resident of Glenhills, like to raise a complaint and alert citizens residing in the Ilembe District about the Municipality's poor services on the distribution of water services and the amount of estimated bills that they require citizens to pay monthly. This estimation they normally tell people about when they pay the water accounts is something that they make up to rip off citizens money. The way that this municipality carries on is such that they are under an influence of raising money to pay off their municipal bill, so they are using this opportunity to snatch people's money. We, as the NFP have talked over this matter with people who are the victims and most of our party members and leaders are affected. We think that it will be much bet ter i f the KwaDukuza Municipality takes over the distribution of water because it is clear that Ilembe is failing to do things accordingly. The sewerage that Ilembe charges citizens of

R140, which is a basic charge and also charges an additional 70% of water charges aside the s ewerage amoun t . Fo r example, if you buy water token of R1000, 70% of R1000 is R700. Then they add R700 + R140 (sewerage) that makes up R840. This means that the actual amount needed to be paid is R1840 monthly for water and sewerage only. I wish to know the people who implemented the system of “water and sewerage” if they know that they are working under the government who was voted by the poor black people who thought by voting, they were voting for the government who promised to g i v e t h e m f r e e d o m , democracy and service delivery. Because if people are to pay R1850 on only water and sewerage a month, where would they get money to provide food for their family. South African people should now consider opening their eyes, to see that this ANC is no longer the one from the past and the one we voted for. It is now the people who are taking advantage of using the ANC logo to get votes but not giving services to the people. People must change their votes and consider something better than throwing away votes for just and ANC logo. To think that the president of this country and who is also an ANC president, can use around R240 million to only

build his house, how many RDP houses can come out from that amount of money. Now there is a R4 billion jet that they want to buy for the president. If you can take R1 billion from that R4 billion and invest, the investment of R1 billion can give R3000 voucher per family to feed themselves, to ensure that the people you are leading are happy and have something to eat everyday and that you practice what you preach. Most people from South Africa are continuously dying f r o m h u n g e r , y e t t h egovernment takes that small that people have instead of helping out. For example, there is no necessity of renewing of firearm licenses, driver's licenses and people are now paying for the new ID's. The more money required by government from people, the more things get worse . In s t ead o f t he government providing more jobs, they are demanding money from the poor people. As the NFP, we are tired of watching our citizens being abused. So South Africans, please act wisely, by changing votes. Where is the free education and jobs that the ANC promised when they were still seeking for votes. By failing to provide what they have promised, proves that they cannot provide services. Their time is over.

I'm Chantal from Stanger here in good faith to testify about a great

person who got me out of a messed life. My husband had left me for 4

years and gone with a younger woman. My kids got out of school

and I lost my business due to stress. I met Mama Amlah through

the news papers and I also gave her a call. We met the next day and

started her work. She gave me some oil to smear on my face and muti to burn for 3 days after 2 more days

my husband called me and said he wanted to meet me and talk. We met

and talked he knelt down and apologised. We are now back

together and the kids are back. I am financially stable all thanks to Mama Amlah. You to can be helped please

Association Division I league winners, Sunbrook will do battle against the Premier League winners Grove End at t h e a s s o c i a t i o n c o u r t s tomorrow, Thursday 26 November.

Sunbrook did not have it all their way in their clash against Darnall United. United gave it their all in the first set in order to gain a psychological advantage over Sunbrook. The set was totally close with Darnall holding on to a hard fought 25-23 win. The second set was equally challenging but Sunbrook picked up their game in the latter part to win the set 25-19 to level the sets 1-1 and push the game into the third and decisive final set.

everything is on track with just a few minor issues to conclude in the days to come. He thanked those who have committed themselves towards making this mammoth event come to fruition and was optimistic that this was going to be an unforgettable night for all those involved with Celtic in whatever way.

The evening promises to keep people happy and will include a three course meal, music, a photo shoot on entry and laughter in addition to the formalities planned. In keeping the atmosphere, laid back and comfortable, the dress code has been defined as smart casual and patrons will be expected to adhere to this to maintain the decorum

of the evening. The evening will be graced by one of Stanger's most renowned sports administrators, campaigner for civil rights and b u s i n e s s m a n M r H a r o o nMohammedy who will attend as the Club's Guest of Honour. Amongst those who have confirmed their attendance are Younus Moorad, Sam Moonsamy, Andrew Athymoolan, D. Moodley, L. van Rooyen and a host of others. The evening hopes to capture the clubs history from its inception to where it is now.

The organizing committee has committed themselves towards working flat out to ensure that a well organized evening is put together which will be remembered for years to come. Naidoo once again called upon everybody to get behind the event to make it the success it deserves to be. He went on to thank everybody who contributed so generously towards the Club's Commemorative Brochure which will be handed out to players at the event.

As the clock winds down and preparations draw to a close all that will be left is for each and every person attending to have a wonderful evening filled with laughter, reminiscence and fun.

Union Challenge League (Stream 2) game played at a damp Gledhow grounds this past Sunday. Due to a damp outfield, the game started one and a half hour late at 10:30 and the overs were reduced to 40.

Dawnheights got off to a disasterous start losing opener Byron Athymoolan for a duck to S. Chetty with the score on 7. Mathew Dean joined Mostert at the crease and the pair steadied the ship putting on a partnership of 72

before Dean was caught of t h e b o w l i n g o f S . Thulisaraman. Moster t followed a short while later c a u g h t L B W b y Thulisaraman. Wickets there after tumbled at regular intervals with Arun Kumar (18) and skipper, Suveer Maharaj (20 not out) the only batsmen reaching double f i g u r e s . D a w n h e i g h t s

reached 164/9 in their a l l o t t e d 4 0 o v e r s . Thulisaraman was the pick of the bowlers claiming 4 wickets.

In reply, Phoenix was bowled out in 31.4 overs scoring a paltry 89. Arun Kumar picked up 3 wickets for 24 runs off 7.4 overs whilst Mostert claimed 2.

M e a n w h i l e i L e m b e Cricket Club's impressive start to the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union Challenge League (Stream I) continued when they maintained their unbeaten run, beat ing Simplex Cricket Club this past Sunday at the Siripat Road grounds in Reservoir Hills.

Simplex won the toss and decided to bowl on a slightly damp pitch. iLembe lost wickets at regular intervals. With the score on 32/4, Alviero Nadesan was joined by Bilal Ismail and together they put on a match changing partnership of 106 compiled by sensible and patient occupation of the crease. Ismail was first to go when he was caught by D. Naidoo off

the bowling of S. Munsamy for 58. iLembe posted 182/8 after 50 overs with Nadesan unbeaten with an impressive 78.

S. Munsamy was the toast of the Simplex bowling attack claiming 4 wickets for 33 runs after 10 overs with Y. Mohamed claiming 3 scalps for 22 runs after 7 overs.

Simplex needing 3.66 runs per over for victory did not get off to a good start losing their first 4 wickets with the score on 7, 28, 38 and 38. A fifth wicket partnership of 13 between J. Hendricks and a. Nagari gave simplex a glimmer of hope but it was in vain as Nagari was bowled by a. Pillay for 6 runs in the 19th over. With the score on 61 /6 iLembe bowle r scleaned up the tail leaving simplex all out for 76 after 27 overs. A. Pillay was in devastating form with the ball claiming 4/23 from 7 and received good support from S. Mhlongo who returned with figures of 2/13 from 8 overs.

iLembe were victorious by 106 runs.

Locals graduate at IKO grading

IKO Matsushima Kykus Kai Kan Stanger Branch held a very successful karate grading session at the iLembe Auditorium this past Saturday. The branch has over 80 k a r a t e k a f r o m p r e v i o u s l y disadvantaged communities and has been run successfully by well-known educator Shihan Senzo Gumede. The function was graced by the Vice President of IKO, John Taylor who is 74 years old and hails from Sydney, Australia. He is also a 9th dan karate expert.

In an exclusive interview the Xpress Times reporter, Taylor at his ripe old age is still absolutely fit and his enthusiasm for karate oozes in his veins, some of which seemed to have rubbed on the karatekas he was so energetically demonstrating to.

When asked why he chose karate as a sport, he said that initially, he had started off with boxing but soon fell in love with karate. He added that

unlike boxing, karate has a lot of endurance and one can do it for a number of years. He said that the standards that he has witnessed in South Africa was mixed fromaverage to very good. He said he was impressed with the standard of the Stanger branch. He complimented the teacher of the branch, Gumede. Taylor said that Gumede was of ahigh quality, very experienced. Healso complimented Gumede for his good organisational skills as the club was well run and can compare with the best in the world. He said that the learners were well disciplined. Taylor added that karate teaches self-defence, better discipline, good manners and good personality.

His advice to the learners were that you must finish what you started and should not quit halfway. If you fail, then you must come back and do it all over again.
