NUDE FOOD CHALLANGE

READERS OF THE WEEK

Starting Monday 20th August and continuing every Monday, each class at WoodLinks will be participating in a NUDE

FOOD CHALLENGE. What does that mean, I hear you ask?

Students are challenged to bring their lunch to school without any packaging. That would exclude any food in plastic

packaging: such as chips, muesli bars, yoghurt, snack packs.

What will they eat you ask? Sandwiches, fruit, cut up vegies, nuts, trail mix, dried fruit are a few suggestions, in a

reusable plastic container. Classes will be surveyed to which class had the most NUDE FOOD lunch boxes. The wining

class in the Upper and Lower school will receive a healthy food prize. Let’s work together to increase the healthy food

we eat as a school and reduce the plastic going into landfill and ending up in our oceans.

Book Fair and Book Week Celebrations

Our Book Fair purchasing began on Tuesday and will continue each day until Tuesday 21st August. Purchases can be made 8:30am - 9:00am and 3:00pm –3:30pm in the Library. Purchases can be made using Cash or Eftpos. This week our Book Week celebrations begin, the theme this Year being “Find your Treasure”. Our years 4-6 students will have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character on the 16th of August due to their Gala Day on Friday. On Friday the 17th of August all students from Prep to Year 6 are invited to come dressed as their favourite book character. There will be a full school parade at 9am on Friday to celebrate, with a very special performance.

Great Book Swap This year, WoodLinks is holding its first Great Book Swap, to raise much needed funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. To participate students need to bring along a book from home that they wish to swap along with a gold coin donation, these need to be handed into their classroom teachers until the 21st of August. On the 22nd of August every student who has brought a book and a donation is then able to choose a book from the many that have been brought in to take home. This is a fantastic way for students to swap an old book for something they have not read yet. Thank you for your support and we look forward to celebrating Book Week with you all.

ILC Parent Morning Tea

The ILC continues to have a busy and productive term with our many projects, support focuses

and specialized groups running. This term, we have welcomed two new staff; Teacher, Ms Tui

opportunity to meet these new staff members, the ILC will be running a short morning tea on

Tuesday 28th August between 8:45-9:45am.

The morning tea will also be an opportunity to hear about a new program that the ILC has

implemented this Term for selected students in Years 4-6, the “Rock and Water” resilience

program. Mr Hamilton, who runs this program, will be briefly explaining the aims and methodology

of the program, as well as giving opportunities to ask questions around it.

All parents throughout the school are welcome to attend this morning tea. Please just RSVP to

myself at [email protected] for catering. Looking forward to seeing as many of you there as

ATTENDANCE

At WoodLinks SS we believe that attendance matters! By attending school everyday students have the very best opportunity to achieve success. Each week we monitor individual and class student attendance. We celebrate attendance every Monday at Assembly with the announcement of the previous week’s winners. In Prep-Year 2, classes are involved in a weekly horse race and in Years 3-6, students are involved in a superhero race (located outside the library). The WoodLinks Attendance Policy can be found on our website.

‘Every day counts’ is a state wide initiative that aims to assist in improving student attendance at school through a shared commitment by students, parents, caregivers, schools and the community. To do this, Every day counts promotes four key messages:

• all children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day

• schools should monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance

• truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices

• attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community.

Attendance target is 95% Recent WoodLinks data shows that the days with the lowest attendance rate are

Mondays and Fridays.

BOXES WANTED

We are looking to add big box play to our outdoor

lunchtime activities. To do this we will need….. You

guessed it … BOXES!! Big ones …. And lots of them. If

you have access to boxes through your work please drop

them to the Prep classrooms, the bigger the better. We

would love some dishwasher or refrigerator boxes please.

English, Prep students are continuing to build their

understanding of rhyme. We are using pairs of rhyming

words to write our own rhymes. We are also developing

our presentation skills by telling known nursery rhymes.

We try to make sure we are using appropriate gestures,

are speaking in a clear voice, and that we are talking in a

way that keeps the audience interested.

Math this week involves exploring time sequences. We

will be looking at activities that occur on different days of

the week and we will be sequencing activities that we do

at different times of the day.

Ms Stemp Prep A Teacher

YEAR 3 NEWS YEAR 2 NEWS

Unbelievable! We are now into week 5, halfway through

term 3!

This week in English, students will begin their assessment.

They will write a procedure for Grandma from the story

George’s Marvellous Medicine. They have been putting

their procedure skills into practice by writing entertaining

procedures for Mr Kranky (George’s Dad). They used

noun groups, command verbs and created pictures to

match their method. Here are some fabulous examples

from our class.

Our class is still seeking parent helpers for the year two

excursion on the 14th of September. If you are able to help,

could you please let me know.

YEAR 5 NEWS

YEAR 4 NEWS

Week 5 marks the halfway point in Term 3. Well done to all students, families and staff for the hard work we have all put in! Science Week has arrived and students have an opportunity to see an exciting show called “Blasting the Past” which looks at the great discoveries across many scientific fields. With Gala well underway, thank you to everyone’s commitment to training before school and during lunchtimes. Keep up the great behaviour on Gala day to ensure you stay on the team. This Friday is book week and the lucky upper school gets to celebrate a day early on Thursday so that no one at Gala misses out on this opportunity to dress up. We are looking forward to your book themed costumes!

English

This week in English students are practising their analysis

skills. They are learning to analyse poetry of purpose and

meaning. This entails identifying language features of a

poem and explain how they influence the reader. Students

are enjoying using the move on up wall to aid them in their

analysis. All students will be completing their English

assessment in the coming days.

Maths

In maths students are learning to count on using decimal

numbers, and create number patterns using decimals.

Students need to have a good understanding of place value

and are practicing their number and reasoning skills. Year 5

students are also investigating the link between fractions

and decimals, and coming up with their own definitions for

these terms.

History

In history the year 5s are learning about early Australian

explorers. Students have learnt about the Blue Mountains

Crossing, as well as Hume and Hovell’s great exploration

from Sydney to Port Phillip Bay. Students are enjoying

learning about these explorers and mapping the routes

they took. We have learnt that not all explorers were

successful, hovever! For example, Ludwig Leichardt and

Burke and Wills suffered through long and challenging

journeys. Leichardt was never seen again!

Book Week

Just a reminder that seniors will be celebrating book week

on Thursday this week. Due to Gala Day sport, students in

years 4-6 will be dressing up on Thursday. We cannot

wait to see the great costumes.

YEAR 6 NEWS

English Year 6 have been very busy writing lots of diary entries and letters. We had a lot of fun writing letters to our

Grandparents, asking what school and life was like for them. Some Grandparents even replied. We have been focussing

on our letters to future students of WoodLinks State School in 2059. It is hard to imagine what life is like in 40 years

time, but we are putting our brains to work.

Maths We are beginning to look at percentages and fractions. We will be working out the price of items after discount. When

you are shopping, it would be great if you could ask your child to work out the price of the items on sale.

Science

We are learning about electrical circuits. We have been putting our own circuits together. We have made our own

switches and we know how to put the circuit together in order to make the light bulb turn on. We have investigated

and tested a range of activities to find out if it is an electrical conductor or insulator.

us. Keep an eye out for our students working hard to earn trust from their friends this week!
