WRANGLER NFR RECORDS AND HISTORY338

About the Wrangler National Finals RodeoThe Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER® is the season-ending championship event for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and is widely acknowledged to be the world’s premier rodeo. Held annually since 1959 – and since 1985, every December at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas – the Wrangler NFR is ProRodeo’s richest and most prestigious rodeo, and it showcases the very best cowboys, barrel racers and livestock in the world.

A new contract keeps the Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas for another 10 years (2015-24) and raises prize money significantly over that decade. It is telecast to more than 55 million households on CBS Sports Net. New in 2015: Polaris RANGER® became the presenting sponsor of the event, and awards each newly crowned world champion a brand new Polaris RANGER® UTV.

The top 15 contestants in the standard rodeo events – bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping (headers and heelers), saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, WPRA barrel racing and bull riding – qualify to compete at the Wrangler NFR based on money won during the regular season including Wrangler Champions Challenge events presented by Justin, the Justin Boots Playoffs and Championships presented by Wrangler, and for many bull riders, PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour earnings. At the conclusion of the Wrangler NFR, the sport’s world champions are determined based on total season earnings – what they win during the Wrangler NFR added to what they won during the regular season, before the Wrangler NFR.

The Wrangler NFR consists of 10 rounds – one round on each of 10 consecutive days; each contestant competes once each day. Cowboys and barrel racers earn money by placing first through sixth in any round, and pick up more money by placing first through eighth in the average (cumulative times or points earned during the 10 rounds). At the end of each Wrangler NFR, there are two champions in each event (four for team roping): the average winner, who won the Wrangler NFR by having the best cumulative time or score for that event over the 10 rounds, and the world champion, who finished the year with the most money (including what he or she earned at the Wrangler NFR). For each event, the average winner and world champion may be the same person or different people.

The 2015 Wrangler NFR was highlighted by a number of remarkable achievements and developments, including these:

• Due to the increased prize purse under the new contract with Las Vegas – which rose from $6,375,000 in 2014 to $10 million in 2015 – leads changed constantly throughout the competition, bringing added excitement for the crowds as well as TV viewers at home. Each contestant earned $10,000 just for qualifying; first place in a round paid $26,231 and first place in the average paid $67,269.

• Only one event (barrel racing) did not see a record set for single-contestant/single-year Wrangler NFR earnings.

• Bull rider Sage Kimzey became the first PRCA contestant to win world titles each of his first two years as a member.

• At the 2015 National Finals Steer Roping in Mulvane, Kan., Jess Tierney tied Cash Myers’ 2005 record for fastest time in a round, at 8.3 seconds.

RAM Top Gun Award

Adding to the excitement level of a world championship event involving more than 100 human contestants and hundreds more four-legged athletes is a formidable task. But RAM found a way – identifying and rewarding the cowboy or cowgirl who earned the most money at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER®.

How does this differ from the other titles awarded at or after the Wrangler NFR? Consider this:• The NFR average title in each event is awarded to the contestant who has the best combined score

(in roughstock events) or time (in timed events) across the 10 rounds of the rodeo; this is roughly equivalent to winning any other rodeo – except for the huge payouts and resulting waves of adrenaline through the venue

• The world championship in each event is awarded after the Wrangler NFR to the contestant who earned the most money in that event at qualified rodeos across the PRCA’s year-long season, in-cluding what he or she won at the Wrangler NFR (which is often the deciding factor)

• The RAM Top Gun Award goes to the one contestant who wins the most money in any single event at the Wrangler NFR; it’s the only title that pits contestants in multiple events against each other.

While it might seem obvious that the contestant who won the most money at the entire Wrangler NFR must have won the average title in his or her event, and perhaps the world championship as well, that’s not always the case; see the list below.

The winner of the RAM Top Gun Award gets a RAM 3500 Bighorn truck, a special Montana Silversmiths custom buckle and a RAM Top Gun-branded gun from Commemorative Firearms.

WinnersoftheRAMTopGunAward:2015 Steven Peebles, BB $234,054 recovered from dire injury in July, broke single-event earnings record at NFR2014 Sage Kimzey, BR $175,466 first rookie to win the award; broke bull riding Wrangler NFR earnings record2013 Sherry Cervi, GB $155,899 broke two records en route to her fourth gold buckle and third average title2012 Mary Walker, GB $146,941 won gold buckle and RAM Truck Top Gun at her first Wrangler NFR – at age 532011 Kaycee Feild, BB $179,327 won both average title and world championship2010* Trevor Brazile, TR, TD $211,509 won TR average title plus AA, TD and TR world championships

TopWranglerNFRearnersinsingleeventsbeforetheRAMTopGunAwardexisted2009 Sherry Cervi, GB $146,100 won average title but not world championship2008 Lindsay Sears, GB $139,002 won world championship but not average title2007 Lindsay Sears, GB $119,255 won neither average title nor world championship2006 B.J. Schumacher, BR $142,644 won both average title and world championship2005 Lee Graves, SW $126,412 won both average title and world championship2004 Billy Etbauer, SB $117,745 won world championship but not average title2003 Janae Ward, GB $111,908 won both average title and world championship 2002 Jason Jeter, BB $98,432 won average title but not world championship2001 Janet Stover, GB $126,934 won world championship but not average title2000 Brent Lewis, TD $103,585 won average title but not world championship

* In 2010, the inaugural year of the RAM Top Gun Award, money earned in multiple events counted in Top Gun standings. Starting in 2011, the RAM Top Gun Award goes to the contestant who earns the most in a single event. Had that been true in 2010, bull rider J.W. Harris would have collected the RAM Top Gun Award in addition to his bull riding gold buckle and average title, with $158,738.

WRANGLER NFR RECORDS AND HISTORY370

The annual Permit-holder Challenge, hosted by the PRCA in conjunction with the Wrangler Na-tional Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER®, is a two-round competition for the top five permit holders in each of the PRCA’s standard events (bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down rop-ing and bull riding). The PRCA sponsors the Permit-holder Chal-lenge as part of its outreach to young contestants who are trying to make the leap to become professional rodeo contestants.

The top five permit-holder members in those events each season – based on total money won on their permits at the end of the regular season Sept. 30 – are invited to complete in the Permit-holder Challenge in Las Vegas in December, concurrent with the first week of the Wrangler NFR. Team ropers whose regular partners do not qualify are matched with other partners by PROCOM.

The Permit-holder Challenge had its origin in 2008, when PRCA stock contractors invited permit holders in the roughstock events to ride horses at the Benny Binion Bucking Horse and Bull Sale, and offered prizes as part of that event. The PRCA added timed events to the Permit-holder Challenge in 2014.
