According to the gospel, Mary and Joseph took the Infant Jesus to the Temple forty days after his birth to complete Mary's ritual purification after childbirth, and to perform the redemption of the firstborn son, in obedience to the Torah (Leviticus 12, Exodus 13:12–15). Luke explicitly says that Joseph and Mary take the option provided for poor people (those who could not afford a lamb; Leviticus 12:8), sacrificing " a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons." Leviticus 12:1–4 indicates that this event should take place forty days after birth for a male child, hence the Presentation is celebrated forty days after Christmas. Upon bringing Jesus into the temple, they encountered Simeon. The Gospel records that Simeon had been promised that "he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ" (Luke 2:26). Simeon, representing the expectant nation of Israel, at last, after years of patient and faithful waiting, held the infant Savior in his arms. The consolation of the nations, the light to the Gentiles, had come. The child was being presented to God by his parents, but in this child God was coming to meet his people, so that he who is the light of the world might make his people lamps shining in a dark world that others might see the right path. FOCUS ON WORSHIP

THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD: This day is an important day in the church year that doesn’t get much

attention since it rarely lands on Sunday. It is an early episode in the life of Jesus, describing his presentation at

the Temple in Jerusalem in order to officially induct him into Judaism. The event is described in the Gospel of

Luke, (Luke 2:22–40). According to the gospel, Mary and Joseph took the Infant Jesus to the Temple forty days

after his birth to complete Mary's ritual purification after childbirth, and to perform the redemption of the

firstborn son, in obedience to the Torah (Leviticus 12, Exodus 13:12–15). Luke explicitly says that Joseph and

Mary take the option provided for poor people (those who could not afford a lamb; Leviticus 12:8), sacrificing "

a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons." Leviticus 12:1–4 indicates that this event should take place forty

days after birth for a male child, hence the Presentation is celebrated forty days after Christmas.

Upon bringing Jesus into the temple, they encountered Simeon. The Gospel records that Simeon had been

promised that "he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ" (Luke 2:26). Simeon, representing

the expectant nation of Israel, at last, after years of patient and faithful waiting, held the infant Savior in his arms.

The consolation of the nations, the light to the Gentiles, had come. The child was being presented to God by his

parents, but in this child God was coming to meet his people, so that he who is the light of the world might make

his people lamps shining in a dark world that others might see the right path. Simeon’s song has been sung by

countless generations of believers ever since.

There are many stories that refer back to the person of Valentine. The most probable is that he was a priest who was ordered killed by Claudius II. It seems that the emperor forbade young men to marry thinking that they would be better soldiers than those who were married with families. As a priest, Saint Valentine performed secret marriages which defied the emperor's order's.

There is a book, “The Roman Martyrology” which contains an extensive list of those who gave their lives for the faith. Some are subject to question - the writers embellishing the facts quite a bit. However, it is clear that second and third century Christians had a lot of problems in living out their faith in a pagan society.

If you look at pages 14 through 17 in the ELW, our red worship book, you will find a sampling of names that are worth investigating. All kinds of people throughout the centuries whose lives reflect an unusual fervor for the faith. There were several that I had never heard of so I did a google search to find out more.

Because I was brought up as a Roman Catholic, I was surrounded by names of many saints and quite frankly I always though of them as friends from the past. Even now as a Lutheran, that has not changed very much. The lives of those people often offer me a litmus test of my own understanding of being a Christian and that

includes Lutherans who are not all that well known.

For example: Pastor K. C. William Dahl who started a mission congregation in Axtell, NE. It was at that time that he discovered the horrors of the institutions that housed those who were proclaimed insane. He worked tirelessly to raise money to start a church sponsored facility to house those people in a far more compassionate environment. He died after becoming ill while trudging through a snow storm on his way to plead for support in a nearby town.

Throughout my life I have been fortunate to have some really fine mentors who have helped me, especially when I was tempted to jaywalk on an easier path. Some have the title of Saint and many do not, but does it really matter?

February seems to be a fine time to take stock of those people, present or gone from your life, who offered you an insight into your life as a Christian. After all, what more appropriate time than during the month when Saint Valentine arrives and reminds us that above all, love is what God is all about.

In peace, Pastor Fred NO BIBLE STUDY ON

Musical meanderings….

Our newest choir member, Sue Gamber, shared this article with me. It struck a chord with me and I would like to share it with you. The author, Jim Taylor ([email protected]) allows non-profit organizations to reprint it.

Singing is breathing together

The most radical thing that churches do these days is not their social justice programs, their housing for the homeless, or even their political lobbying. It’s their singing. Have you noticed that the younger generations don’t sing? Oh, they’re never without music. They have music or at least what they consider music, pumped into their ears constantly by their Bluetooth ear-buds. They have audio systems in their cars that can rattle windows a block away.

But they don’t sing along. They kind of grunt and twitch along. They don’t even know what to sing, unless a loudspeaker provides leadership. I sat around a blazing campfire in a mountain resort, a couple of summers ago. Many of the group were half my age, cheerfully toasting marshmallows, passing bags of snacks, staring into the embers. Someone started singing campfire songs. Only the older folks joined in. Increasingly, I think that singing is a counter-cultural phenomenon. And it happens mostly in churches.

A way to build community

It’s just my personal view, but I don’t think we sing so that the sound of our praise can go up to God. I think we sing to build community. By singing, we do something together, something that we enjoy, something that we don’t have to vote on, something that doesn’t require us to defend our views.

Lindy Thompson, who manages Tennessee United Methodists for Inclusion, recognizes why she goes to church. She put her feelings into a poem (excerpts reproduced by permission: lindythompson.net).

I go to sing. It’s the willingness to stand if you are able, the common agreement on page number, the voluntary sharing of songbooks with people on your row but most of all, it’s the collective in-breath before the first sound is made, the collective drawing upon the grace of God, the collective, if inadvertent, admission that we are all human, all fragile, all in need of the sustaining air, freely dispensed, all in need of each other to get the key right and not sound discordant, it’s the hidden life-celebration in the act of making a joyful noise, all together. We don’t even have to sound that good. Singing together still brings home the we-ness of worship, the not-alone-ness of life in God, the best of all we have to offer each other.

I love her line, “the collective in-breath before the first sound”. Meditation commonly encourages us to focus on our breathing, to breathe deeply. Singing requires a whole congregation, whether twelve people or twelve hundred, to breathe in unison -- all drawing a breath at the end of each line, all exhaling together as we sing the next line.

When we sing, whatever our belief or theology, we live and breathe it today, drawing in the grace of God, voicing out our need and hope and gratitude and longing. When we are singing, I can feel the better world coming, and if I get to be a part of it, you do too. So, sing with me and we’ll make our way down that blessed road together, collectively better than we ever thought possible.

St. Luke’s Weather Policy and

Worship Cancellation Information

We are now into the time of the year when we may have to

deal with wintery weather and the cancellation of worship

services or fellowship events. In the event of inclement

weather, please be advised that St. Luke follows the same

protocol of the public school systems in the area.

Usually, if local schools are closed because of bad weather, St. Luke will be

closed for all church activities and to all groups using our building.

Please check www.stlukerichmond.org, the St. Luke web site, for the most up to

date info on any changes. All weather related cancellations and changes will be

posted on the home page.

We will also add closings to Channel 6, Channel 8 and Channel 12. Channel 12

is the only one that lists church closings on their TV station channel. The others

stations list church closings on their website only.

It’s Time for a Lunch and Learn Event!

St. Luke’s Stephen Ministry Committee presents a Lunch and Learn event on the topic of our communities Opioid Crisis on

Sunday, March 31, 2019.

We will serve lunch and hear from our panel about this growing crisis and what we can do about it.

Lunch: 11:30 to 12:15 Program: 12:15 to 1:30

Please sign up on the bulletin insert so we can plan to have enough food for everyone. All are welcome as we learn about

this important topic.

Worship Service Assistants

Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers.

We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services and communion, Altar Bread Bakers and other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy.

In our music department, we have Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members and all sorts of Musicians. We are so thankful to have these folks assist us every week but we can always use more help.

If you are interested in serving the Lord at our church and would like more info about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship and Music Ministry, we would love to hear from you.

Please contact the following people for more information about Worship: Pastor Fred Marcoux, [email protected] Vince Reedinger, Worship/Music chair, [email protected]

For more information about our chancel choir, handbell choir or the music department, please email Richard Barnett, our Director of Music at [email protected].

Do you have an important meeting or an event coming up?

If you would like an announcement in the weekly bulletin, please email the church office at [email protected] or call 804-272-0486 before 12:00pm on Wednesdays with your dates and times. The Church Scheduling Calendar is located in the office. It has all planned and confirmed activities listed if you’d like to check to see if your date and time is open or has any conflicts. Thank you for helping us keep the St. Luke Church

Do you have something for the next Church Newsletter?

The St. Luke Messenger goes to press on the 23rd of each month. Because of this, all information needs to be in the church office by the 20th of the month. This will help us in getting an accurate newsletter out in a timely manner.

Please call in or e-mail in your event and meeting submissions with all meeting dates and notices to Tammy in the church office as soon as possible. We need to add your events to the church calendar as well. The March 2019 Newsletter Deadline is February 20th.

Pastor Fred has decided to allow Altar Flowers during the season of Lent this year. Lent begins on March 6, 2019,

Ash Wednesday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate Altar Flowers during this time in Lent, please sign up on the Flower

Calendar in the fellowship hall. Please remember, Altar Flowers may be given in more than one name on any

given Sunday. We love when we have two arrangements for Sunday morning so please feel free to check out

the chart! If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Thank you

for your gifts of Sunday Altar Flowers.

SANCTUARY FLOWERS

Would you like to place Flowers

on the Altar on Sunday?

If so, please sign up on the

Flower Chart in the Fellowship Hall.

Questions?

Please see the information below

or call the Office at 804-272-0486.

Flower Dedications

The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used

to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend Worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a

special person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may find a

certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed

directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers are yours to take home

after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the

container the flowers are in to the church at your convenience. You may sign up on the chart located in the fellowship hall.

The Flower Chart Calendar

The 2019 Flower Calendar is hanging in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday Altar Flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Just let us know and we will automatically add your info to the Flower Calendar each year. If you have any questions or would like more information about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.
