About Down Town College of Allied Health Sciences

When people talk about healthcare the only profession that come to the mind is Doctors. But Healthcare science is a vast and varied filed. Increasing use of technology in the field of medicine has resulted in large number of specializations. These specializations, related to treatment or more importantly involving new and complex medical procedures and equipment need able trained people.

The role of trained paramedics is of immense importance in the diagnosis and treatment of any disease. In every sphere of medical sciences, paramedical personals are playing the key roles. Keeping these in mind, Assam down town University, has come up to open different degree courses in different fields of paramedical and allied health sciences. The down town group started paramedical training through diplomas in 1997 from the down town hospital. It is seeing the acute shortage and the need for a quality paramedical institute, that the down town College of Allied Health Sciences came up in 2009. The scope for paramedic is immense. According to WHO recommendations, the doctor-population ratio should be 1: 1000. One doctor needs a minimum of 8 support health personnel. This means, India requires more than 12 Lakhs doctors and about 96 Lakhs support staff. We have only 4 Lakhs doctors presently. Strength of support personnel is also way below the requirement. Paramedical experts play a very important role in helping the doctor make an accurate diagnosis for treatment, cure and overall care of patients. Paramedics can include X-ray technologists, medical laboratory technicians, dieticians, emergency care technicians, safety, micro biologists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, radiographers and so on. These specialists have ample job opportunities in the government as well as the private sector. They can also go in for research and development work in institutional laboratories or with pharmaceutical companies.

The various job opportunities open to paramedics are as follows:

In various hospitals / medical colleges/ clinics and health departments,In private hospitals / nursing homes / clinics etc.,Teaching / research in concerned areas of specialization,Private practice / self employment.

About Guwahati

Guwahati is the largest city of Assam and Northeastern India, a major riverine port city and one of the fastest growing cities in India, situated on the South Bank of the Brahmaputra River.

The ancient cities of Pragjyotishpura and Durjaya (North Guwahati) were the capitals of the ancient state of Kamarupa under the Varman and Pala dynasties. Many ancient Hindu temples are in the city, giving it the name "City of Temples". Dispur, the capital of Assam, is in the circuit city region located within Guwahati and is the seat of the Government of Assam.

Guwahati lies between the banks of the Brahmaputra River and the foothills of the Shillong plateau, with LGB International Airport to the west and the town of Narengi to the east. It is gradually being expanded as North Guwahati to the northern bank of the Brahmaputra. The noted Madan Kamdev is situated 30 kilometres (19 mi) from Guwahati. The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), the city's local government, administers an area of 216 square kilometres (83 sq mi), while the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is the planning and development body of greater Guwahati Metropolitan Area. Guwahati is the largest city in Northeast India.

The Guwahati region hosts diverse wildlife including rare animals such as Asian elephants, pythons, tigers, rhinoceros, gaurs, primate species, and endangered birds. The religious village of Hajo is situated on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River. About 30 kilometres away from Guwahati, Hajo is an ancient pilgrimage centre for Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims. There are quite a few temples in Hajo and all enjoy the reverence of their devotees. Most famous is the Hayagriva Madhava Temple atop the Monikut hill. Hindu as well as Buddhist pilgrims seek solace at this scared stone temple. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Hayagriva Madhava Temple is also known for its exemplary architecture. Other historically and religiously important temples in Hajo include the Madan Kamdev Temple on Dewangiri hill and the Kedareswara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

A World Heritage Site, the Kaziranga National Park is one of the most, if not the most, visited attractions of Assam. Kaziranga National Park has over 1800 one-horned-rhinoceros roam freely through the dense jungles and vegetation of the park. The Kaziranga National Park was declared as a ‘Tiger

Reserve’ in 2006 owing to the high density of tiger population in the park. Other exotic wildlife thriving in the national park includes elephants, water buffalos, and swamp deer. Birdlife International has declared Kaziranga National Park as an ‘Important Bird Area’ for conservation of avifaunal species. You can go for an hour long elephant ride through the rhinoceros populated areas. You can also try a thrilling jeep safari through the dense forests of Kaziranga. Saraighat Bridge connects northeast India with the rest of India – and it’s quite beautiful! Opened to traffic in 1962, theSaraighat Bridge is the first rail-cum-road bridge over the leviathan Brahmaputra River.
