Rachel Silver joined the horn section of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2013, after having held the position of section horn with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for two years, and with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra for five years. She has also performed with the Australian World Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, The Queensland Orchestra, the Tasmanian Sympho- ny Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria. Raised in Melbourne, Rachel came to the horn relatively late, after learning other instruments. She completed her Bachelor of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts with first class honours, studying with Graeme Evans. Rachel then went on to complete the Advanced Performance Program at the Australian National Academy of Music. Rachel was a member of the Jeunesses Musicales World Youth Orchestra, and toured to Europe and Asia with this group. On her return to Australia, she moved around the country perform- ing contracts with almost all of the Australian symphony orches- tras, before gaining her position with the WASO, followed by MSO and SSO. Rachel is committed to teaching, and has taught at tertiary institutions in both Melbourne and Perth. She has tutored previ- ously at AYO’s National Music Camp and Young Symphonists program. Rachel is also an accomplished pianist, having com- pleted her L.Mus.A, and performs regularly as an accompanist and associate artist in recitals. David Elton joined the Sydney Symphony as Principal Trumpet in 2012. He has previously held principal positions with the West Australian and Adelaide symphony orchestras, and has per- formed as guest principal with the Australian Chamber Orches- tra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne and Queensland symphony or- chestras, as well as the Sydney Symphony. As a chamber musi- cian, he has toured Germany with WorldBrass and is a founding member of the Australian Brass Quintet. He has performed concertos with the WASO, ASO and the Aus- tralian National Academy of Music orchestra, including a con- certo written for him by James Ledger, and has also featured as a soloist at trumpet and brass festivals. In 2012 he appears with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and pianist Steven Osborne, performing the Shostakovich concerto for piano and trumpet. Raised in Sydney, David Elton studied with Paul Goodchild. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Queensland Conser- vatorium (where he studied with Yoram Levy), and a master’s degree from Northwestern University (Charles Geyer). He was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and a fellow of the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo Japan. In 1998 he won first prize in the International Trumpet Guild’s Solo Competition held in Kentucky, USA. While in Perth, David Elton was Head of Brass at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He has also taught as a guest at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory in Singapore, and is currently on the brass faculty at ANAM.
