Begin by establishing the relationship between the course content and industry-relevant skills. The goal is to design an experience that meets the needs of all our stakeholders: students, companies, and educators.

• What would your students typically do after graduation? What types of jobs would they secure?

• Which course learning outcomes have a direct connection to what a student will do in a workplace?

• If a student were discussing your class in a job interview, which skills would you want them to highlight?

Raising Awareness of Mental Health Issues

Strategic Web Design

Improve your organization's sustainable practices. Student-consultants will evaluate and recommend tactics and specific actions to implement for your organization to make a positive impact on society, the environment, and your earnings.

Students will produce creative assets to raise awareness of mental health issues, or in support of a campaign by an organization that works in the mental health field.

Do you want to enhance your delivery of digital content? In this assignment, student-consultants in McMaster's Web Design certificate program will work in teams to either design, redesign or optimize an existing company web site, webpage, or app.

In addition to the normal design associated in this tasks, groups will design an enhanced user registration and message board. A basic e-commerce design can be added or changed depending on your organization's needs.

• Have you ever used a case study in your class? If so, what was it about?

• What challenge would a company have that your students would be well suited to solve or provide insights about, based on what they are learning in your classroom?

• What do your students do particularly well, or what types of skills do they have that relate to your course content?

Project ExamplesSustainability Management Consultancy Strategic Web Design

Beginning this September, an interdisciplinary team of 4 to 5 student-consultants will spend 80 to 100 hours working for your organization on a challenge your organization faces related to social or environmental issues.

Drawing from information your organization provides and student research (primary or secondary) the group will prepare a final report detailing their recommendations. Participating organizations will be encouraged to attend a final event where students will present their project findings through posters or small presentations.

Project focus may include, but is not limited to:

• Exploring solutions to a sustainability-related issue facing your firm.• Aiding your organization in addressing one or more of the United

Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs) here: https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/?menu=1300.

• Identifying and analyzing sustainability-related certifications relevant to a product, process, or business function.

• Analyzing a firm's sustainability practices and making recommendations regarding a firm's sustainability report.

A Content Management System (CMS) is a software application that is used to create and manage digital content. Based on your organizations goals, students will apply skills in consumer research, design and testing to create a CMS that achieves your goals.

Project tasks include:• Holding a discovery meeting to understand your needs and

develop a project scope.• Interviewing users to gather applicable design specs.• Conducting user testing to understand and optimize

existing design challenges.• Applying design thinking theory and practices to create a

prototype.Example projects include, but are not limited to:• Redesigning an existing website, webpage, or app.• Designing a new website, webpage, or app.• Optimizing a specific part of a website, webpage, or app

Once the project is identified, we want to set the deliverables. These should be useful for the industry partner, and suitable for assessment.

Examples: Video summaries, infographics, visual reports, and sample collateral.

In order to identify the best deliverable type, consider the following:

• In what format would this work be presented in a workplace setting?

• How do the needs of industry deliverables differ from the goals of academic deliverables?

• What would allow the students to most effectively showcase the information to the industry partner?

Setting Expectations: Industry partners may not know what to expect, and will be unfamiliar with what you are teaching in the classroom.

• Are there any specific resources that a company would have to provide for this assignment?

• Are there requirements the company partners must fulfill, such as attending a final presentation or providing a briefing document?

• Does the company understand the students’ scope of responsibility? Can the students actually do what is outlined in the project?

• How many student teams will the company be working with? Are you expecting one client for the whole class or one client per group?

Once the project has been designed, you should be able to answer yes to the following questions:

• Is this project something that will adequately demonstrate the students' skills to an industry partner?

• Is this project providing value for the industry partner/partners?

• Is this project reflective of what students might do in a workplace setting? Or allowing them to develop workplace skills?

• Is this project meeting my objectives as an educator?
