President Panzer Moves to Full-Time In December, we announced that President Justin Panzer would be coming on board in the District Office full-time, starting in January. He’s now preparing for his last day as pastor of Faith, Abiliene, where he has served for 16+ years. Below, we’ve reprinted a slightly edited version of his original message, in case you missed it. Dear Friends, Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Since I assumed the office of district president last summer, I’ve been splitting my time between the District Office and Faith, Abilene, where I serve as pastor. After much prayerful consideration and counsel with my family and the District staff, I’ve decided it would be best if I served as Kansas District president in a full-time capacity. The duties and responsibilities of this office demand my full-time attention and devotion. I am anticipating my final Sunday at Faith, Abilene to be January 12, 2020. I have striven over these past 4+ months to serve both the Kansas District and Faith well. It’s time for both me and my family to begin a new chapter in our lives and for the wonderful saints of God at Faith, whom I have had the privilege to serve for the past 16+ years, to begin the process of calling a new shepherd whom God Himself already knows. My prayers are that He will grant them a faithful shepherd soon! In the meantime, Rev. Gene Holtorf will be filling that role as vacancy pastor. As a lifelong Kansan, I want to see the LCMS Kansas District do well. After all, we have the truth of Jesus Christ to proclaim (2 Corinthians 5:20), to teach (John 14:6), and to share (1 Peter 2:9)! I look forward to giving my full attention and effort to the mission we all share in the LCMS Kansas District. Please know that my prayers are with you in your everyday vocations as the baptized children of God. Thank you also for your continued prayers for me, for my family, and for our District staff in our common work together (Philippians 1:5). I leave you with these words of St. Paul from 1 Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” In Christ, Rev. Justin Panzer President

NAME Conference: Small Churches

In November, Rev. Dan Galchutt traveled to Houston, Texas, and attended the NAME (North American Mission Endeavors) Conference, which focused on small churches. “The meeting explored the ways in which small churches work differently from bigger churches,” said Galchutt. “For the purposes of our meeting, a ‘small church’ was defined as having less than 250 people in worship.” Among the highlights:

• In America, 90% of churches are under 200, and over 80% are under 100; small churches have constituted the majority of churches throughout church history.

• There are three reasons why people choose to attend

a small church: 1. The pastor knows their name. 2. When someone is missing, people notice. 3. They want what they do to matter. They can use

their gifts and don’t need to be professionals.

• Small churches prioritize relationships, culture, and history. A pastor of a small church should focus on these things in his ministry.

Reflections: “Shepherding the Strays” RE:VITALITY FIELD UPDATE: On November 8–9, 2019, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt held a “Shepherding Our Strays” workshop, which focuses on how to serve members of God’s family who have drifted away from the Church. “‘Shepherding Our Strays’ really helped the congregation

envision how we can move forward with ministering to our inactives,” said Rev. Timothy Roth, pastor at St. Peter’s. “It requires a lot from the congregation, but that’s because it’s centered on the all-encompassing ministry of reconciliation. It begins with humbling ourselves, acknowledging our own part in the straying of our members, and then gives us a practical way to keep with the fruit of repentance. The CARE Team structure is simple yet thorough. It has brought a lot of excitement to our congregation and the idea of reaching out to our inactives!” Are you interested in bringing re:Vitality to your congregation? The District has mini-grants for that!

LYF Teen Leadership Training Institute The 2020 Lutheran Youth Fellowship (LYF) Teen Leadership Training will take place March 12–15, 2020 at the Pallottine Renewal Center (http://pallottinerenewal.org/) in north Saint Louis County. At this event, young people and adult leaders are encouraged in their faith and acts of witness and service. Youth then lead the training back in their home district, circuit, or congregation. This provides opportunities for leadership and encouraging others in their life in Christ and the Church. As we engage both district and congregational participation, we continue to build and support a network of teen and adult leaders in the Synod. The cost of the event is $375 per participant, which covers housing and meals at the Pallottine, the leadership training, and all Teen Leadership Initiative programming. Transportation is not included. Early registration is recommended as our space is limited at the center. Our 2020 Leadership Training will encourage and challenge young people to grow in their understanding and application of their baptismal faith in life’s vocations. REGISTRATION PROCESS FOR DISTRICT PARTICIPATION: Registration is open until March 1, 2020 at https://lcms.regfox.com/2020-lutheran-youth-fellowship-

training At least one adult should accompany each “group” of youth participants. An effective ratio, though not a

requirement, is two youth and one adult per district or congregation. We recommend no more than eight (four?) youth per one adult. This participation allows for adequate support and sharing in responsibilities to replicate the training back home.

LCMS Youth Ministry is available to make flight arrangements for those who are flying and will bill districts for those costs. We can also bill for registration after the event if helpful. Once your participants have been determined, please email Krista Miller at [email protected] to book your flight.

Business Office New! Online Giving

Supporting Kansas District ministries just got a little easier!

We’re pleased to announce that online giving is now available at kslcms.org. With just a few clicks, donors can direct gifts to one of our named funds (Kansas District Missions, West Africa Missions, Disaster Relief, Education Loan Repayment, and Scholarships), leave the gift undesignated (to be used where needed most), or specify how the gift should be used (e.g., Education Legacy Fund). You can access the online donation page in the drop-down menu under “Business Office” (and you’ll soon be able to access a direct link from the top of our homepage). Our payment page is powered by Prolific Business Solutions, which tithes a portion of its revenue each month to the Lutheran Federal Credit Union’s Ministry of the Month.

2019 Fiscal Year-End January 15

The District will close its 2019 fiscal year on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Anything received after that date from your congregation will be credited to the 2020 fiscal year. To meet the standards for a not-for-profit corporation audit, we cannot credit any mission

commitments/gifts received in our office after the 2019 fiscal year end is closed; congregations must meet this deadline. If you are sending a 2020 gift prior to January 15, please indicate that it is to be posted to 2020 so that we may credit it correctly for your congregation. The 2019 year-end checklist is available on the Kansas District website under the Business Office tab in the “Frequently Requested” box.

LCEF

A Note from Your DVP

Dear Kansas District Members, Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) held its 2019 Leadership Conference, “Ignite Creativity,” November 22–24 in Houston, continuing a decades-long tradition of presenting the Gospel-inspired results and benefits of LCEF’s work. Participants from the Kansas District included voting delegates Rev. Dan and Melissa Galchutt and Rev. Richard and Loren Lally. During the three-day event, speakers from a variety of disciplines shared how to be creative and innovative within the Church, work and life. A few highlights:

• Keynote speaker Danny Wuerffel, a Heisman Trophy winner, NFL quarterback, and executive director of Desire Street Ministries, shared a framework for creativity and innovation through humility—“something incumbent upon all leaders, whether in our homes, churches or workplace.”

• Speaker Tim Tebow, a first-round NFL draft pick and Heisman trophy winner who is currently signed to play professional baseball with the New York Mets, said, “If you see a really big God, you will have a big vision and big creativity, but if you think God is small or limited then your vision will be small and limited. The thing is, we serve a big God.”

• Ed Catmull, retired president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, shared advice on creativity based upon his experience at Pixar and talked about how to build a culture that lasts, “with an emphasis on getting the right chemistry with the right people in the building.”

• Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler, The Lutheran Hour speaker, led two Bible studies, encouraging the audience to listen and meditate in the “pre-print” way. (Zeigler recited the first three chapters of Genesis from memory.)

• Rev. Bart Day, LCEF president and CEO, chatted with LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison to learn about his first nine years as LCMS president and how he sees creativity and innovation applied in the Church’s future.

Page 12: WORKERS TOGETHER...o BOD member Curt Engelbrecht and family (Trinity, Wichita) at the death of his father, LeRoy Engelbrecht, Dec. 6, 2019 o Rev. Rick and Lois Rostek (Immanuel, Norton)

Participants in the LCEF servant event, with the help of LCMS Recognized Service Organization (RSO) Upbring, filled over 150 Christmas activity boxes with ornaments, candy, movies, and other activities for families with foster children in the Houston and Austin areas. On the last day of the conference, LCEF held its annual meeting. Kevin Bremer, chief finance officer and senior vice president of finance, reported that LCEF emerged from the 2019 fiscal year achieving or exceeding many of the core targets and goals outlined in the prior year. One such goal was the $100 million LCEF was able to raise in less than four months on a limited-time 40-month note. Later in the meeting, voters reelected Rev. Max Phillips as chair of the Board of Directors and Linda Barnes as secretary. At the close of the conference, Rev. Day said, “What a great three days. We have been encouraged and equipped to ignite creativity … in word and deed. It’s been a wonderful time to connect with old friends and an opportunity to make new ones. We appreciate all of our investors and borrowers and friends. We look forward to seeing you next year where we will celebrate all of God’s blessings that have been poured out on LCEF.” Blessings,
