Sadly, he end of the school year is fast approaching and he natter of my angels going to first grade will start to weigh heavy on my heart (mostly due to my separation andety). Each year, arotmd his time, I begin to question f I am doing every4hing o prepare my sweet riends for the next step n their educational oumey. Five years ago I started brainstorming ways I could ease his transition for them and wanted o share one idea that got positive feedback rom my parents. When Auburn City Schools adopted he Wonders reading program this suntmer, teachers eceived oads of wonderful resources o aid in our instruction. In addition to these great tools, we obtained a practice book, also known as a workbook, for each child. My proposal s to offer tlris rvorkbook for ),our child to take home so that you may use them at your discretion. Each practice book is t'illed with items that use he same ormat they will see next year. Plus, kindergarteners dolize big kids', whether t is siblings, friends, cousins. tc., and ove the dea of homervork as hey envision t being big kid' stuff. I am not an advocate or using rvorkbooks or r,vorksheets s a teaching ool in the classroom. owever, think these can be useful or familiarizing vour child with some of the expectations hat next year may hold for them. It is not required hat you use hese practice books or that you return your child's completed work to school (unless, of course, hey would like to 'celebrate' it with their peers.) I am hopeful hat if used n an appropriate vay at home, hese books can be one way to help ease he shift from kindergarten o first grade. Monday afternoon, I will send home the Wonders' 'Your Tum Practice Book' rn your child's backpack. f you find it useftrl and would like more, will gladly send home additional workbooks from previously adopted eading series.
