Welcome, I’m so glad you’re here. What if, by reversing years of unconscious conditioning, you could return to the perspective of a person with the same desire, need, and craving for alcohol as someone who has never picked up a bottle—a nondrinker? I am thrilled to tell you that you can. By the end of this program you will be able to determine alcohol’s role in your life without emotional or illogical cravings. You will be happy about your choice because it will be decided from a place of freedom rather than out of obligation or coercion. Your desire to drink will be gone, so no matter what you choose you won’t feel like you are missing out.

“We can’t be afraid of change. You may feel very secure in the pond that you are in, but if you never venture out of it, you will never know that there is such a thing as an ocean, a sea.”

– C. JoyBell C.

You won’t be pining for a drink or avoiding social situations because of temptation. Without desire there exists no temptation. This program will change your perception by showing you why you drink, both psychologically and neurologically. You may believe you already understand why you drink—to relieve stress, engage socially, or liven up a party. These are your rationalizations for drinking, but you actually drink for subtler and less conscious reasons. Understanding these reasons will put you back in control. But first, we must undo years—decades—of unconscious conditioning about alcohol. You may find it impossible to believe drinking less won’t involve deprivation. The idea of drinking less fills you, as it did me, with dread. You worry that parties and social occasions will become tedious and difficult to attend. If you drink to relieve stress, the thought of losing the added support you believe alcohol provides can be terrifying. But it’s true. With this approach you can effortlessly drink less and feel happy about it. Does drinking less mean drinking nothing? Do you need to quit forever? That will be up to you. You will make your own decision based on information that empowers you, giving you back control rather than imposing rules on you. We will explore all aspects of the drinking cycle. Don’t worry about making a decision about how much or how often you will drink now. What is important in this moment is that you have hope. You need to know this approach can and will work – that you will be released from the clutches of alcohol. Skeptical? That’s ok, in fact it’s important that you question everything I say and everything you currently know about alcohol and addiction. Education, learning and understanding is central to this approach. So be hopeful! You are about to accomplish something incredible – regaining control. You no longer have to choose between the lesser of two evils (continuing to drink or living a life of deprivation). Rather, you will make the simple choice between your current state and a bright, exciting future. This program contains a new, revolutionary approach. It will change your life as it has changed mind. All my best,

How To Use This Workbook. This workbook is designed to accompany This Naked Mind: Audio Program which can be found at: https://thisnakedmind.com/?p=2052 •  The program is an online learning course with a series of 23 ‘lessons’. •  The central part of each lesson is an audio podcast that you can either listen to on the site or

download to your device. •  Each ‘lesson’ corresponds to pages in this workbook. •  There are questions for reflection both before and after you listen to the podcast. •  The before questions can be found on both on the online lesson page and in this workbook. •  The after questions can only be found in the workbook.

You will also find a full content page here: •  This is a page with a playlist of all the podcasts on a single page. This may be helpful if you

want to listen to more than one at a time or if you are skipping the corresponding questions. You will find all citations for the program – organized by lesson – here. Finally you will find a robust ‘Resources & Links’ pages here. •  These pages include links to social and blogging communities you may want to explore as well

as links to other interesting content – for furthering your learning – across the web. Important Note: While many find the workbook helpful to reflect and process what you are learning it is an optional part of the program. Understanding how busy our lives can be it was important to me that the audio program stand alone. That being said I highly recommend the workbook. I have gotten tons of feedback and listeners agree that self-reflection and exploration is important. The workbook will help you cement the concepts in your mind and your life. You don’t necessarily need to write down your answers (though many do) but I do recommend pondering the questions. I wish you the best of luck in your exciting journey to finding freedom from alcohol. - Annie Grace

Lesson 1: How & Why The Method Works Before you listen: In your own words: 1)  Define: Unconscious 2)  Define: Conscious 3)  What impact do you think your unconscious mind has on your life? 4)  What role might your unconscious mind play in your drinking habits? After you listen: Personal reflection – take 5 min to think about the following. Write your thoughts below or in a separate journal: What are the reasons you drink? List everything that comes to mind. What does drinking feel like for you? List all the adjectives that come to mind. What do you feel when the time you know you are going to get to drink draws close? Describe the anticipation in as much detail as possible.

Over the next few days: Throughout the day drinking may cross your mind, you might look forward to having a drink later, you might think about getting off work or relieving your stress at the end of the day. Over the next day try to be mindful of every time drinking sounds good, every time having a drink crosses your mind. Keep a piece of paper in your pocket, use the space below or use the notes application in your phone and make yourself a note every time drinking crosses your mind. Try to pay attention to exactly how you feel and what triggered the craving for a drink. Jot down a few words about what – specifically – you were looking forward to (taste, relief, relaxation, enjoyment, the buzz, slowing down, energy etc.). See how frequently it happens and if you can notice any patterns or any triggers to your cravings. The objective of this exercise is to try to bring your unconscious, and ongoing, desire for alcohol into your conscious mind. Then, when these thoughts become conscious we can start to evaluate them and test them against reality. When did I want to drink? What did I feel?

Lesson 2: The Drinker or the Drink: Part 1 – The Drinker

Before you listen: Why do you think you drink more than you want to be drinking? Check all that apply and add your own: !  Escape !  I feel weak-willed !  Genetics – I was born this way !  I believe I am an alcoholic !  To relieve stress !  I just like to have fun !  Other (list all other reasons):

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After you listen: Do you blame yourself for drinking more than you want to? Do you make yourself rules (alcohol free days, no drinking until after 5pm, only 2 glasses etc.) and then break them? What are some of your rules? Why do you think you break these rules?

Lesson 2: The Drinker or the Drink: Part 1 – The Drinker

After you listen (continued): Do your loved ones blame you for drinking more than you should (either overtly or with looks and comments)? What was your perception of the disease of alcoholism before you listened to the podcast? How has it changed? What questions do you still have?

You can’t solve a problem you don’t realize you have.

Lesson 3: The Drinker or the Drink: Part 2 – The Drink

Before you listen: Reflect on the point in time when drinking became more important in your life than you ever intended it to be. Do you recall a specific moment or time in your life when this happened? Can you pinpoint the shift in your mental attitude toward alcohol?  On a scale of 1 to 10 how in control do you feel you are of your relationship with alcohol: ________ (1 = Lost all control – 10 = In complete control)

After you listen: What symptoms, for you, represent no longer being in control? Bad decisions? Getting sick? Simply regret? Hangovers? Recrimination from family and friends? Has there been anyone in your life (the homeless drunk) who has served as a warning symbol that alcohol had consequences? If not, is there anyone who should have been a warning?

Lesson 3: The Drinker or the Drink: Part 2 – The Drink

After you listen (continued): Are you drinking more or less than you did three, five, or even ten years ago? It is terrifying to think about giving up something you feel brings you pleasure or relief. What about cutting back or quitting drinking makes you apprehensive? What gives you hope when you think about an alcohol free life? Is there anything specific you are looking forward to? (e.g. no hangovers, no morning after regrets… more money, etc.)

Most of us hide behind the arbitrary line we have drawn between “alcoholics” and “regular drinkers.”

Liminal Thinking: Reference

I’ve organized this program in an unique way, using Liminal Points to shine the light of conscious thought on our ingrained beliefs about alcohol. This is important because often things we know to be true – or our beliefs – may actually be formed on a pyramid of our experiences, observations, assumptions and conclusions rather than on reality. What we know to be true may not actually be true but since our reality feels real to us we never pause to examine their validity. The Liminal Points take you on a journey through certain, long-held beliefs about alcohol. This technique will speak to your unconscious through allowing you to examine what you believe to be true against external sources. What experiences have you had? What observations and assumptions have you made? What conclusions have you drawn? Once we’ve established a detailed framework of why you believe what you believe, I will reveal another perspective, one that may be closer to reality, in narrative form. In this manner we will submerge beneath the surface of your conscious and deconstruct your beliefs about alcohol.

Lesson 4: Liminal Point: Is Drinking a Habit?

Before you listen: Once something has become habitual, like driving or brushing your teeth, you no longer consciously think about it. What are some things in your life that are habitual? Do you feel that you drink alcohol habitually? No longer thinking about each time you drink?

After you listen: The majority of drinkers believe they drink because they want to, they enjoy it, and they choose to do it. Say I offered you two hundred thousand dollars to stop drinking. Would you? Do you have to think about it? What about a half million dollars?

Lesson 4: Liminal Point: Is Drinking a Habit?

After you listen (continued): Do you fear that you will never be happy or at peace without drinking and that stopping will make you feel unhappy? List all of your fears, as specifically as you can, about giving up drinking – what do you feel you will lose by breaking your drinking ‘habit’? Upon careful reflection do you believe your drinking is truly just a habit? List 5 things you will gain by breaking your drinking ‘habit’: 1. 2.

3. 4.

5.

We may habitually drink, but if breaking this ‘habit’ involves fear than your drinking has become much more than a habit…

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

After you listen: What does your body and mind do for you that you truly appreciate? We’ve been created for the survival of our species and ourselves yet with capacity for emotion, empathy, reflection, and compassion, we are able to accomplish so much more than just survival. Does drinking ever make you feel like you are just surviving?

After you listen (continued): What warning signs or symptoms from your body and mind have you ignored? List 5 ways that you will expect to feel better without alcohol in your system: 1. 2.

3. 4.

5. Do you see yourself as strong, complete and whole? If not, why not?

We don’t need alcohol to enjoy life or to relieve stress – we only think we do.

Lesson 6: Liminal Point: Are We Really Drinking for the Taste?

Before you listen: Do you remember your first taste of alcohol? Remember or write down the first time you tried booze: How did it taste? What was your reaction to it? Do you remember how it made you feel?

After you listen: Herd mentality makes it easier to believe or do something because everyone else is saying or doing the same thing. Have you been encouraged to drink even on occasions you didn’t want to?

Lesson 6: Liminal Point: Are We Really Drinking for the Taste?

After you listen (continued): If everyone is doing it, there must be good reasons—it must not be that bad! How have you rationalized your drinking or made yourself feel better about it? List 5 rationalizations below:

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Be honest -- do you really like the taste of alcohol or did you “acquire” a taste for it?

We have an uncanny ability to unknowingly deceive ourselves.

Lesson 7: You: Polluted

After you listen: What have you learned? What is most concerning to you? What is most surprising?

You have been unconsciously conditioned to believe that alcohol provides numerous benefits.

Lesson 8: Liminal Point: Is Alcohol Liquid Courage?

Before you listen: Can you think of times you used alcohol for liquid courage? Did it work?

After you listen: We know drinking has dangers, yet we brag about our ability to hold our liquor. Like a warrior demonstrating strength through his scars, we demonstrate strength by beating our bodies up and rallying the next morning. Have you ever worn your hangover as a badge of courage? How do you think it truly made you look? What healthy activities get your adrenaline pumping? Are you able to enjoy them when you’re drinking?

Lesson 8: Liminal Point: Is Alcohol Liquid Courage?

After you listen: Have you ever used alcohol to numb a healthy fear? Did it work? Were there repercussions? What do you want to accomplish when you reclaim your true courage and confidcence?

It’s good for us to feel fear, it prevents us from taking unnecessary risks .

Lesson 9: Oh S#*%! We’re Stuck!

Before you listen: Do you believe you are influenced by marketing?  Try to recall recent alcohol advertisements you’ve seen - what are the specific claims these advertisements are making. In other words, what benefit is the advertisement claiming alcohol will deliver? What aspect of your life is the advertisement telling you will improve as a result of drinking? Be as specific as possible.

Lesson 9: Oh S#*%! We’re Stuck!

After you listen: Look back at the alcohol advertisements you saw. Try to identify the product’s product’s product. Try to see which of your most fundamental emotional desires the advertisement is appealing to and notice how unrelated the claim is to the reality of drinking Can you think of other ways marketing has deceived you into thinking alcohol is helping you?

Our society not only encourages drinking – it takes issue with people who don’t drink.

Lesson 10: Liminal Point: Drinking Helps Me Loosen Up and Have Better Sex Before you listen: Do you believe that alcohol is key to breaking the ice at a party? Why do you think this is?  How would you define good sex?

After you listen: Did lowering your inhibitions ever get you in trouble or put you in a dangerous situation? Would you have been in that situation if you weren’t drinking?

Page 25: Audio Program Workbook - This Naked Mind€¦ · Contents 2 Welcome Letter 03 How To Use This Workbook 04 Lesson 1. How and Why The Method Works 05 Lesson 2. The Drinker or the Drink?

25 © 2015 This Naked Mind, LLC

After you listen: Have you ever embarrassed yourself by drinking too much? Or family and friends? Did you think that your judgment was still solid at that time?

Shyness and inhibitions are not negative, yet we’ve been conditioned to think they are.

Lesson 10: Liminal Point: Drinking Helps Me Loosen Up and Have Better Sex

Lesson 11: A Quest for Sobriety

Before you listen: Can you recall a time in your life when you didn’t need alcohol to enjoy yourself?  Where do you think your descent into the ‘pitcher plant’ began?

After you listen: My rationalizations became so powerful that I blinded myself to reality. What harmful rationalizations have you turned into your reality?

Lesson 11: A Quest for Sobriety

After you listen: One of the great things about the life you are about to lead is how much fun it is to disprove your false notions about alcohol. What are some of your false notions? Do you understand the difference between living a life in recovery and completely changing your mental (conscious and unconscious) perspective on alcohol? What questions do you still have?

The part of your brain that sees alcohol as a problem is at odds with the part of your brain that wants a drink whenever you

feel like it.

Lesson 12: Liminal Point: I Drink to Relieve Stress and Anxiety

Before you listen: How often do you use alcohol to relieve stress?  What exactly (be as descriptive as possible) do you think the alcohol does to relieve your stress?  Do you believe you are more stressed now than 3 yrs ago? 5 yrs ago?

After you listen: Is alcohol relieving your stress or is it creating more stress and drama in your life? How much alcohol does it now take in order for you to relax? How much did it used to?

Page 29: Audio Program Workbook - This Naked Mind€¦ · Contents 2 Welcome Letter 03 How To Use This Workbook 04 Lesson 1. How and Why The Method Works 05 Lesson 2. The Drinker or the Drink?

Lesson 12: Liminal Point: I Drink to Relieve Stress and Anxiety

After you listen: Does drinking alcohol help you find a solution to the problems creating your stress? Is it lightening your load in any way? Before drinking, how did you handle stress and anxiety? Why did you stop using those techniques?

The most thorough road to relaxation is removing the specific irritation that is causing you stress.

Lesson 13: The Mystery of Spontaneous Sobriety

Before you listen: Have you heard the term spontaneous sobriety?  If yes, define it in your own words.  If no, what would you guess it means? What do you think are the most effective treatments for alcohol addiction?  What do you think the average success rates are for various treatments?

After you listen: Define, in your own words, spontaneous sobriety.

Lesson 13: The Mystery of Spontaneous Sobriety After you listen: What do you think it would take - what needs to change inside you - for you to achieve Spontaneous Sobriety? Make a list of what is scary about never drinking again, describe your feelings and be as specific as possible.

We become so good at making excuses, at blinding ourselves to the truth, that we believe our own lies.

Lesson 14: Liminal Point: I Enjoy Drinking; It Makes Me Happy

Before you listen: What do you think it is about alcohol (what does drinking do) that makes you happy?   If you are unhappy do you think a drink makes you happy or does it just dull the symptom of being unhappy?  Are you ever unhappy when drinking?

After you listen: Is part of your fear of quitting drinking because you fear you will be unhappy without it?

Page 33: Audio Program Workbook - This Naked Mind€¦ · Contents 2 Welcome Letter 03 How To Use This Workbook 04 Lesson 1. How and Why The Method Works 05 Lesson 2. The Drinker or the Drink?

33 © 2015 This Naked Mind, LLC

After you listen: If you know that alcohol is a depressant, why do you still hold on to the belief it makes you happy? Think of some of your happiest memories. Do they involve alcohol? Make a list of things that make you happy even after you are no longer doing it. (I.e. exercise because you can see the results)

Lesson 14: Liminal Point: I Enjoy Drinking; It Makes Me Happy

The cumulative effect of alcohol, on any drinker, is unhappiness, not happiness.

Lesson 15: Defining Addiction: Part I

Before you listen: In your own words how would you define addiction, what does addiction mean to you?

After you listen: Do you understand why you drink? Do you feel deprived when you aren’t drinking? What parts of your life is alcohol impacting? Your relationships? Finances? Your health?

Lesson 15: Defining Addiction: Part I

After you listen (continued): The truth is that you don’t need alcohol to enjoy yourself; you only think you do. Think back to activities you enjoyed as a child – did you need alcohol to have a good time back then? Do you truly need it now?  Did you perform the Ultimate Test? What happened?

Alcohol doesn’t satisfy your desire for alcohol; it is what created your desire for alcohol.

Lesson 16: Liminal Point: Is Alcohol Vital to a Social Life?

Before you listen: Reflect on your life before drinking. Do you remember it? What was your social life like before alcohol?  (you may have to think back to your childhood - that's OK)  What was the last social occasion you attended where you didn’t drink? Did you have a good time? If not, why not?

After you listen: According to Johann Hari the antidote to addiction is actually companionship. Do you believe that is true? (Click here for Johann Hari Ted Talk) Does alcohol make you more social or have you turned into a loner?

After you listen (continued): Is it hard to accept that what you enjoy about social activities are your friends and the experiences? What are your favorite memories from social events? Make a list of things you can use as an ice breaker in social situations. Try them out at the next social event and come back to write about the interesting conversations you had that you actually remember.

It’s not drinking that makes these activities fun; we enjoy them because we are with friends and doing something we like.

Lesson 17: Defining Addiction: Part II

Before you listen: When you don’t allow yourself to have a drink (for whatever reason) how does it make you feel?  When you allow your self to ‘give in’ and have a drink how do you feel?  How often do you think about having a drink when you are not drinking?

After you listen: Describe the difference between craving something and liking it? How do cravings make you feel?

Lesson 17: Defining Addiction: Part II

After you listen (continued): What pleasures do you now no longer enjoy that used to bring you joy? When you stop drinking, your brain will stop compensating and repair itself. You can again find pleasure in simply living—as you could before you ever started drinking. What simple pleasures do you miss?

Societal cues strongly influence your unconscious mind.

Lesson 18: Liminal Point: It’s Cultural: I Need to Drink to Fit In

Before you listen: Do you think it will be difficult and lonely to live without drinking? How do you think your friends will react?  Whose reaction are you most afraid of?  Who in your life do you think will be most supportive?

After you listen: “I felt drinking was practically mandatory. There was so much social pressure that I didn’t feel like saying no was an option.” Have you ever felt this way? Did you even realize that saying no was an option?

Lesson 18: Liminal Point: It’s Cultural: I Need to Drink to Fit In

After you listen (continued): Be conscious of the fact that a change for you will mean a change for them. Are you concerned with how your partner will deal with the change in you? Rather than admitting to a problem, you have been educated and enlightened. You will no longer want to drink. Drinkers may have a hard time with this. They may wonder how can you not want to drink? What are your reasons? How do you plan to navigate these conversations? It’s not about pleasing everyone all the time – you are doing this for yourself. How does it feel to finally be doing something for yourself?

Thinking something is true often makes it so.

Lesson 19: The Descent: Why Some Descend Faster Than Others

Before you listen: Reflect on your story. Where did it begin for you? Do you consider yourself to have an addictive personality? If yes, explain why. What is it – specifically – about your personality that makes it ‘addictive’. Do others say you have an addictive personality? If yes, how does that make you feel?

After you listen: What were the significant milestones in your descent?

Page 43: Audio Program Workbook - This Naked Mind€¦ · Contents 2 Welcome Letter 03 How To Use This Workbook 04 Lesson 1. How and Why The Method Works 05 Lesson 2. The Drinker or the Drink?

Lesson 19: The Descent: Why Some Descend Faster Than Others

After you listen (continued): Five personality traits linked to being or becoming addicted are “openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.” Do you identify with any of these traits? Everyone who drinks now drinks more than they used to; I know this is true because at one time they didn’t drink at all. Have you ever considered that? Does it change how you perceive alcohol and addiction? Take a moment and make a list of everything you get from drinking.

Did you expect your list to be longer?

There is no inexplicable defect in our personalities, no elusive flaw in our bodies. Alcohol is simply a highly addictive drug.

Lesson 20: Living A Naked Life In Our Society

Before you listen: You don’t have to change anything about your lifestyle; however, you should make sure you spend your time doing things you actually enjoy, with people you like to be with. Reflect, are there activities in your life that are only reasons to drink, and which will no longer give you any pleasure?

After you listen: Be mindful and aware of the constant barrage of messages you are subject to every day. When you start to question, remind yourself of the truth about alcohol and consciously undo these influences as soon as possible. What are three things you can remind yourself of when you start to question? 1. 2. 3.

Lesson 20: Living A Naked Life In Our Society

After you listen: “The bottom line is, if I am unable to find joy in a situation, it’s most definitely not the lack

of alcohol to blame.”

Have you been using alcohol to self medicate? Do you think it would be freeing to actually address the reason you are self medicating?

“It was the promise of wine that changed the mood.”

Can you see how addiction, until you drink enough to change your brain, is mostly mental? Can you think of other situations where the promise of something changes the mood?   It is important that you don’t make the mistake of

clinging to any former illusions about alcohol.

Lesson 22: The Secret To Happily And Easily Drinking Less

Before you listen: Reflect on your journey. What decisions do you feel capable of making? What fears do you still have? Do you feel that you can allow yourself to experience life without alcohol? To allow yourself to heal and realize the truth of what you have been told?

After you listen:  How do you feel about alcohol right now? Does your answer surprise you?

Lesson 22: The Secret To Happily And Easily Drinking Less

After you listen: Where do you want to go from here? Go back to the first chapter and your lists; reflect on each point and below write about how your point of view has changed.  What tactics can you use to ensure you ‘don’t let the garbage in’ and continue to protect your unconscious mind from societal conditioning?

Make a choice to let go of your desire for alcohol.

Lesson 23: The Journey: “Relapse”

Before you listen: Do you fear you may start drinking again? What situations or circumstances do you worry about most?

After you listen: It is a mistake to believe that by losing a battle we have lost the war. What other things have you failed at that the failure actually made you stronger, better and more aware?

Page 51: Audio Program Workbook - This Naked Mind€¦ · Contents 2 Welcome Letter 03 How To Use This Workbook 04 Lesson 1. How and Why The Method Works 05 Lesson 2. The Drinker or the Drink?

Lesson 23: The Journey: “Relapse”

After you listen: Can you make a promise to yourself, that if you do drink again and it again makes you unhappy that you will come back to the principles in this program? A promise that you will look gently and honestly at why you drank and if it actually provided any of the benefits you were hoping for? Or did alcohol deceive you and in reality it took from you giving you nothing in return?

If you know you will change, no matter what it takes, no matter how many battles ahead of you, the war has already been won.

Lesson 24: Pay it Forward

Before you listen: This is a very short audio program, with a very poignant message. One of the keys to human happiness is helping others. Reflect on a time in your life when you have lent a hand and helped someone else. How did it make you feel? Do you agree that helping others is a key to personal happiness? Explain.

After you listen: Is there anyone in your life that you want to share this message with? If yes, how would you go about sharing?

“You are very powerful, provided you know how powerful you are.” -Yogi Bhajan

Lesson 24: Pay it Forward

After you listen: Write your story. Either in your own narrative or by answering these questions: When did you start to drink? How did you feel about it? What were some of the poignant milestones along your journey with alcohol? What prompted your desire to change? How did you feel at the beginning of this program? How do you feel today? As a society we seem to have forgotten that alcohol is addictive. Are you willing to share the specifics of your journey with alcohol –even anonymously– in order to provide encouragement for someone else? If yes consider submitting your story for publication on This Naked Mind blog at: https://thisnakedmind.com/mystory

Going forward into your new ‘Naked Life’

After the program: One of the greatest joys is discovering how amazing life is without alcohol. Start a journal and begin to record your reflection on how it feels in certain situations not to be drinking. It is important to do this. It allows you to revel in the truth that life really can be amazing (even better!) without booze. Your reflections will also serve as future reference – reminders for times when unconscious conditioning may seep in. Nothing will be more powerful than your own experiences to remember and reinforce everything you have learned. First Alcohol Free Social Experience: Second Alcohol Free Social Experience:

Third Alcohol Free Social Experience:

Revel in the blissful realization that you don’t need alcohol to have a good time… alcohol itself just tricked

you into believing you did.
