Pantry In BlissvilleGets Food Delivery

On Thursday, December 15th, CM Van Bramer delivered over 1,000food items to the St. Raphael’s food pantry in Blissville. At the food dropoff, Van Bramer highlighted rising hunger statistics across the city andin the local community, stressing the need to continue donating to foodpantries this holiday season and beyond.

This is the Council Member’s second annual food drive and thedonations were even more generous than last year. More than 1,700items have been collected during his holiday food drive and delivered totwo local food pantries.

However, Van Bramer’s food drop off Thursday came at a time whenfood pantries across the city are seeing more New Yorkers who needtheir services. At the same time, the pantries face a decrease in supportfrom the state and federal governments and an increase in the cost offood. The combination has many food pantries in the city feeling thepinch. With this in mind, the Council Member urges the community tosupport their local food pantries and support the city’s less fortunate intheir time of need.

“Thanks to the gracious and generous donations from the commu-nity, many families will have the food they need this holiday season. Inour great city, no one should go hungry, and during the holidays manyfamilies struggle to survive. As neighbors, we should all do our share tokeep our food pantries stocked,” Van Bramer said.

How to Cope With the‘Threat of Longevity ‘

You can’t predict how longyou’ll live. Nonetheless, youstill need to consider longevityas a key factor in creating, andfollowing, a long-term invest-ment strategy.

And your projected lifespanmay be longer than you hadthought. Men who turned 65 in2010 can expect to live another18.6 years, while women whoreached 65 that same year cananticipate another 20.7 years, according to the 2011 SocialSecurity Trustees Report. Andthese figures are just averages;depending on your health andfamily history of longevity, youcould well spend two, or eventhree, decades in retirement.

Possibly because people arenow realizing they may have tosupport themselves for far longerthan earlier generations did, theyseem to be growing increasinglyconcerned about running out ofmoney in their later years. Infact, in a poll of people ages 44to 75, sponsored by Allianz LifeInsurance, 61 percent said theyfear depleting their assets morethan they fear dying.

So, if you’re concernedabout outliving your resources— or if you think that you maybecome one of those people —

what steps should you take, bothnow and during your retire-ment? Here are a few ideas:

Keep investing. Put away asmuch money as you can affordfor your retirement. Take advan-tage of tax-deferred accounts, such as your 401(k) and tradi-tional IRA, or tax-free accounts, such as a Roth IRA. (Roth IRAearnings are tax-free providedyou’ve had your account at leastfive years and you don’t starttaking withdrawals until you’reat least 59-1/2.) And keep invest-ing, year in and year out, despitethe inevitable market volatilityyou’ll encounter along the way.

Re-assess your retirementage. If you enjoy your work, you might consider staying atyour job a few years later thanoriginally intended. Those ex-tra years of income, not to men-tion extra contributions to your401(k) and potentially biggerSocial Security payouts, canmake a big difference to yourretirement lifestyle.

Delay taking Social Secu-rity. As the laws now stand, youcan start taking Social Securityas young as 62, but your monthlychecks will be bigger when youreach your “full” retirement age. You’ll get your biggest monthly

Social Security checks if youwait until age 70, when they“max out,” but many peoplefeel that waiting that long maynot be worth it, when weighingthe lost years of any paymentsagainst the unknown variableof life expectancy.

Calculate your “withdrawalrate.” Once you retire, it’s es-sential that you know how muchcan withdraw each year fromyour investments without run-ning out of money. Your with-drawal rate depends on a vari-ety of factors, including yourage, size of portfolio, risk toler-ance and retirement lifestyle. Afinancial professional can helpyou calculate your initial with-drawal rate and adjust it as timegoes on.

The possibility of outlivingyour resources is not a pleasantthought. But by taking the stepsdescribed above, as well as oth-ers, you can go a long way to-ward taking the fear out of lon-gevity, leaving you free to fullyenjoy an active retirement.

Standing Up forQueens Hospitals

Local hospital closingshave affected residents’health, access to care

On the heels of a recent reportthat examined the status of strug-gling health care facilities inBrooklyn by the GovernorCuomo-established BrooklynHealth Systems Redesign WorkGroup, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) urged theGovernor to join him in workingto ensure sufficient access tohealth care in Queens and theBronx, which have also faced theclosure of numerous hospitals.

“While the proposals from thisworking group may not be theanswer for every situation, I wouldlike us to begin a conversation onhow best to address some of thesimilar issues we are facing inQueens and the Bronx. This is ahigh priority for residents in theseareas, and I hope we can worktogether to address the concernsof these communities,” writes Rep.Crowley in the letter.

A number of hospitals inQueens have closed over the past

several years, including St.Joseph’s Hospital, Parkway Hos-pital, St. John’s Hospital Queensand Mary Immaculate Hospital. From the loss of economic en-gines in the community to hin-dering patients’ access to care, these closings have had a severeand direct impact on Queens.

“It is time to start the searchfor innovative ways to supportstruggling hospitals, or new typesof care facilities, in areas thathave seen hospital closures,” con-tinued Rep. Crowley.

Rep. Crowley has been astrong advocate for urban hos-pitals and specialty care centersin Queens and the Bronx, fight-ing to ensure residents have ac-cess to quality care. He was aleader in the effort to keepWestchester Square MedicalCenter in the Bronx open, hasworked to ensure fair Medicarepayments and, in conjunctionwith his New York Congres-sional Delegation colleagues, has called for the protection ofhospitals and health systemsfrom the threat of spending cuts.
