Woodburn Public School Shane’s Stuff Creative and Critical Thinking – Minds Wide Open: Following our recent training of staff around embedding richer and deeper thinking among students, I thought we should provide our newsletter readers with a challenge to test their own capabilities. In only a brief period of time (5 to 7 minutes) try one of the following challenges. Whose mind is the most creative??? Apples & Oranges – similarities and differences: 1. Think of two things that are similar (e.g. Apple and orange or heart and brain). After listing all the similarities try to find differences between them. How many can you think of? 2. Select two very different things (e.g. Carrot and microphone or pineapple and dog). After listing the differences try to find common attributes. How are they the same? P&C Meeting: A very committed group of people again met last Monday evening as representatives of our parent and community body. Whilst small in number, they are full of enthusiasm and passion. This is fortunate for us all as without them the school would be a different place. This group of busy parents ensure that we still offer meal deals each Friday, continue the fundraising focus for our school and provide their support and ideas to activities linked to the school. On Monday evening the P&C considered the proposal by Richmond Valley Council to make an application to improve our bus zone and seek to establish a designated drop-off/pick-up zone for use by families. A letter of support to council from the P&C, as well as the school and bus company will hopefully provide email: [email protected] Web:www.woodburn-p.schools.nsw.edu.au Week 3 Term 2 Wednesday 16 May 2018 Ph: 66 822 502 Fax: 66 822 513 Woodburn St WOODBURN 2472 For Yor Diary Week 3 14 - 18 May Thur NAPLAN Fri Walk Safely to School Week 4 21 - 25 May Tues Interrelate Yrs 5 & 6 Wed Sharing Culture Performance $4:50 Week 5 28 May - 1 June Tues Interrelate Yrs 5 & 6 Friday NRPSSA Cross Country Next P & C Meeting Monday 18 June 6:30 pm in the staffroom. the necessary backing for this project to gain funding and become a reality. On the canteen front, please consider your availability to assist. This term there are very few helpers available and the same faces are filling the roster on many occasions. Whilst they are keen to keep this service available, it would be disappointing to burn them out and face the situation of putting our canteen in recess once again.

NAPLAN:Whatever people think about NAPLAN and the benefits it provides to systems and schools, I am pleased with the efforts and enthusiasm of our students both yesterday and today. With only numeracy (math) to follow tomorrow, or a catch up day if needed on Friday, NAPLAN will be out of the road for Years 3 and 5 students for another 2 year.NAPLAN, as with all days of school, is benefitted by students having good sleep and a well-nourished diet. Add these elements to the day to day learning experiences, and the results on NAPLAN should reflect the data collected by teachers as the year progresses.

Until next newsletter…..

Walk Safely to School DayOur “Walk Safely to School Day” will be held this Friday 18 May. The aim of this day is to encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour. Some children in our community walk or ride to school and many children come to school by bus.

Please join with the school community by participating on this day, walking your child to school or the bus stop and showing them the best way to be safe pedestrians.

5JW are creating a new garden between the classrooms and the Library.

We are hard at work cleaning up the weeds, getting rid of the spiky plants and designing a new area. Students are aiming to create a great

outdoor learning area, a crunch and sip garden

and a composting area for green waste and fruit and vegetable scraps. They are so keen they even garden

at recess.

Get rid of this spikey

plant.

I love gardening

.

So many weeds!!!!

Team work!!!
