I started life in Quebec, and after attending Vanier College CEGEP in the Montreal area, began my mechanical drafting and design career in the hydraulics business. A few years later I migrated to Calgary where I spent a few more years, and met my wife Teresa. Work opportunities took us to Saskatoon for two years, and then to Victoria for a couple more. We’ve been Burnaby residents for over 20 years, and have a daughter attending university.

I love variety, and have enjoyed working in several different industries. Some of the project experience I’ve shown here may be from quite early in my career, but they have all have value and have taught me something. It all adds to the breadth of experience I can offer, and could help you too.

I have spent several years or more with good organizations: Chromalox (3), CAE (3), Pro Forms (3), Geotech (3), Teleflex (3), Ballard (6), Weatherhaven (3), and have done numerous short term projects along the way. I became interested in Quality Management after having been part of several start-ups which did not pan out for various reasons, all linked to Quality. I wanted to at least make my contributions quality ones. I graduated form the BCIT Operations Management / Quality Management program in 2008, and have been trying to put my training into practice since.

In 2011 I decided to try my hand at the ‘contracting’ market, which has been fun and challenging. I’ve been keeping busy doing a variety of projects. Keeping the workload balanced can be difficult, but I enjoy the learning aspect.

I pride myself on being versatile, honest, dependable, a continuous learner, and wanting to exceed your expectations.

Ballard was heavily invested automotive fuel cell development. There are numerous difficult technical challenges requiring a sophisticated approach to reliability and cost. Initially I joined the marine systems group, but spent most of my time with the automotive stack development group, in different roles as a mechanical technologist.

The new Richmond Olympic Experience is a world class interactiveexhibit featuring sports action simulators, and includes plenty of custom fabricated metal structures.

Working from interior architectural plans, I produced detail design drawings for shop fabrication of exhibit items, including bent &welded tube designs, a structural tower, ‘stretched metal’ cnc files, etc. ATB’s customer was Three Dimensional Services.

Three prominent Vancouver hospital lobbies feature donor recognition walls, featuring programmable LED backlit graphic glass panels, and built-in 42” touch screen. in stainless frames. Modules allow for versions up to 25’ length. 3DS’ customer was NGX Interactive.

A branch manufacturing facility for Chromalox, this smaller shop designed and produced custom commercial electric heating units, and heating control panels.

I drew the equipment up, with the help of sales engineers, and also helped run the shop while looking after inventory, a repair facility, and job production.

We obtained CSA approval on several new designs.

Start-up IPS was poised to launch esthetically pleasing window security products, including fixed, fixed-openable, and retractable bars systems. I performed benchmarking against competitive products, started implementation of a quality management system, and acted as procurement engineer to source low cost and technically challenging machined parts, extrusions, coatings, etc.

This innovative machined enabled serious practice and fun in small space. A sensor array tracked club head direction and velocity, then calculated trajectory. I gathered calibration data using club swinging machine ‘Brutus’, and worked with professional golfers on a grid-marked field. The design was sold to Marubeni/Sony for the Japanese market.

A novel lightweight and portable sound attenuation booth. It could be used for practicing music privately, or to provide a quiet meeting space in a noisy environment. Panels are constructed of inflatable, clear, mass-loaded vinyl. Model were provided in Solidworks for financing proposals.

Mechanical and hull drawing packages for Shipalts (modifications and upgrades to Navy ships.) Working initially with contractor Eyretechnics, then directly for DND’s Naval Engineering Unit (Pacific) and Ship Repair Unit at Esquimalt. Completed Intro Naval Architecture course.Provided drawings to NATO standards for:

•Hull and superstructure modifications.•Various equipment installations: engines, radar, tanks, piping, etc.•Produced otherwise rare ‘clean’ drawing packages (zero redlines).

SED supplied the ship-board systems, which needed improvements for reliability and maintainability.Extensive design rework was done to satisfy DND requirements. I supervised a team of mechanical drafters in completing the project.

On several projects I have helped Kadant Carmanah’s engineering team on capital equipment orders for OSB and other wood products plants.

Equipment included ring stranders (new and conversion), rotary whole log de-barkers, chippers, a log alignment conveyor and other parts of the log handling systems.

Detail design and drafting done using primarily Autocad, and also Solidworks.

Brunette has manufactured quality machinery including ring de-barkers, chippers, and hogs for a long time. They also provided ‘job shop’ service to repair or build a variety of equipment.

When they lost key members of their engineering team, I helped out by filling in with drafting and project coordinating tasks.

I also reverse-engineered and detailed many wear and replacement parts and assemblies for ring de-barkers using Autocad and Solidworks.

The Centurion is a quality trimming machine for the serious hobby farm.Working from original concept demonstration prototypes, I provided manufacturing drawings for machined parts and sheet metal work in Autocad. The design was sold to commercial interests and is in production.

Rotating Power Washing Head

This water-powered spray head uses 2200 PSI water and a turbo-powered rotating head to clean bins fast.

The unit was reverse-engineered and re-designed for low cost offshore manufacture. A full set of Solidworks models and quality manufacturing drawings were provided.

Many of the machinery projects I’ve worked on use hydraulic and/or pneumatic power and controls. Typical equipment drafted include custom hydraulic power units, manifolds, cylinders, installation details, and schematics.

I have been involved with several types of pumps design and manufacturing.

Toyo specializes in slurry pumps and supplies to EPCM customers. I helped created custom configurations of various styles. Another project was to reverse-engineer a line of submersible pump components including cast impellers and housings, and manage theprocurement of casting patterns.

With National Process Equipment my focus was fire pump packages.With both groups I acted as contract administrator, dealing withBOMs, customer inquiries and documentation submittals.

I’ve also worked on detail design of gear pumps for diesel fuel, and special high pressure metering pumps for lab use.

•Incorporated requested design changes for new orders to both main module and skimmer module, including telescoping crane, swivel base and hose reel drive system.•Revised and created new models and drawings in Solidworks.•Resolved issues with fabrication team and sub-contracting machine shops.

Potash Sampling – Neptune Terminals SKS Engineering, Burnaby BC

Neptune required an upgrade to its potash handling terminal. SKS designed the refit of the transfer tower at Berth 3 to incorporate a new product sampling system.

I created a model of the design in Inventor to be used as a design review tool.

Pinnacle needed a new pellet handling terminal, and the Westview Terminal was built in Prince Rupert, engineered by CMC.

I provided detail manufacturing drawings for the product spouting and sampling equipment.

Protect-A-Form Production Collator/Converter Pro Forms Equipment, Calgary AB

Pro Forms developed a high speed process for making poly-sealed adhesive-backed business forms uses primarily as shipping forms for customers such as FedEx, Puolator and Canada Post. The combination collator/converter performed die cutting, glueing and heat sealing, and used innovative roll drive technology. Mettech brought the UBC research project to reality in developing the axial injection plasma torch and system, which applies advanced ceramic and other coatings to critical surface engineering applications.

•Detail design and drafting of torch and system components, managed documentation.•Coordinated production of torches, and resolved design and production issues.•Managed inventory, helped fabricate complex parts, anodes/cathodes.

AML designs innovative oceanographic instrumentation of several types. This project for NRC was to develop a hydrodynamic descending water sample collection bottle array, which would collect high purity samples collected at selected depths, drop its disposable ballast at the ocean floor and return to the surface without leakage.

•Detail design of hydro-dynamic pressure compensated bottle array, solenoid actuation, etc.•Coordinated fabrication and testing to 5,000 PSI water pressure.

WAMDII SED Systems, Saskatoon SA

NRCC/NASA funded the project to develop the shuttle-mounted Wide Angle Michelson Imaging Interferometer for measuring upper atmospheric winds. Considerable engineering difficulties (thermal, optical precision, accelerations) were tackled. Mission scrubbed due to Shuttle incident.
