DIVINE MERCYTeach me, O Lord, about Penance. My loving Lord, teach me how penance should play an essential role in all Christian life. Unless I do penance for my sins and for the sins of the world, I cannot be Christ's disciple. Teach me, Lord, how doing penance is sharing in Christ's own spirit as He was born in a cave, lived in poverty and died cruci ed. Teach me, Lord, that penance is the only road that leads from sin to God, from death to life, from sel shness to love, from despair to hope. Doing penance is being willing to be cruci ed with Christ. It is believing that, unless I choose willingly to pass through the gate of death as Christ did, I shall never be ushered with Him into His eternal Joy.

RCIA Rituals at MassAs a community, we journey with the adults who are seeking to join our Catholic Church. During Mass we pray with the Elect and Candidates, and witness the rites that lead up to and include Baptism, Eucharist and Con rmation. As the Elect continue their journey towards Baptism at the Easter Vigil, and the Candidates for full reception also at the Easter Vigil, there are three rituals of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) celebrated at three of our liturgies. Next weekend we will celebrate our 1st Scrutiny. The scrutinies are celebrated on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent. During these rituals, those preparing for entrance into the Church are led through prayerful re ections designed to help them grow in holiness. Our Elect and Candidates will be prayed over by the Presider, Deacon, and their sponsors. Your role, as their parish community, is to join in the praying, with the hope that our entire community will be renewed in these celebrations.

Don’t deny what you need most during Lent. Many of us see Lent as a time to deny ourselves something we enjoy; or as a time to give something up. Many of us, though, find ourselves denied through no choice of our own. We are confronted with a major life challenge, from losing a job, losing our health, or losing someone we love.In times like these, we can do something we need for Lent – ask for help. If you find yourself struggling with a difficult situation, please call the Stephen Ministry. These members of your parish have been trained to provide confidential, Christian care to those in need. Stewardship . . . moving us closer to God

The First Reading from the Book of Genesis begins “God put Abraham to the test.” Isn't that what Lent is all about for each of us? We are being put to the test.We are less than two weeks into our Lenten journey, how are we doing? Have we even made an effort to let the Lord know that we want to move closer to Him? What have we done to change the way we live? One of the great gifts we have received, which is also a challenge, is that God has granted us free will. Simply put, it means we choose the direction of our lives. This is a time when we should reflect on what we have, and what we need to change. Someone once said, “Lent is a time for spiritual spring cleaning.” We should be examining our behavioral patterns to see what makes us less than what a Christian should be. We need to address the stewardship of our lives.Today’s second reading contains a statement which is familiar to many of us: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” The significance of that phrase is if we are on the side of righteousness, which should be part of our Lenten experience, there should be nothing to threaten us. We understand that we will be judged but Paul’s point is if Jesus is our advocate, promoting our benefit, then who can condemn us? Placing our trust in God should be a part of Lent and an integral part of our lives.

The Gospel recounts the Transfiguration, that moment when the Lord revealed to us just a glimpse of what Heaven is all about. Of course, we cannot completely understand the concept of Heaven. Nevertheless, it should be very much the basis of our efforts and concentration during this Lenten season. We must take care not to think of the transfiguration as being a spot light on Jesus. This is not a light coming to Jesus from the outside; it involved a change from the inside. We should all strive for that same change; that conversion of heart which opens up the door to stewardship and discipleship and shows us the path to eternal life.

Please contact us at S t e w a r d s h i p @ A m e r i c a n M a r t y r s. o r g , with questions or comments about Stewardship.

SiLent meditation - tHe prayer oF tHe Heart During the Fridays of Lent join us for 30 minutes of Silent Meditation and contemplate the merciful love of the Father. God wants us to come to him with our joys and sorrows.

To let him shine his light into our darkness. To let him love us and make us whole. To lay down at the foot of the cross all that he wishes to transform in our lives so that we are prepared for the cross of Good Friday, and the resurrection of new life with and through Jesus.

Meditation is simply being still and silent in the loving presence of God. Simple, yes. Easy, no. We are not used to inaction and interior quiet. In this world of constant information, and doing instead of being, we need to create sacred space within our day and within our heart to be quiet in the Lord. It is in the silence that we come to know his love for us.Merciful Jesus, I Trust in You.Join us Friday mornings in St. Joseph’s Chapel at the Spirituality Center (use Pacific Ave. entrance). All are welcome!

Each of us longs for belonging. Our basic search is what drives our lives. Jesus very clearly, in simple terms defines belonging, invites us to him and shows us the way. Please join us for two 20-minute periods of silent prayer, closing with “Our Father.” The intent of this retreat is to provide a thorough, personal examination of consciousness in one’s own time, with the structured support of a weekly prayer group, leading to a deeper commitment to Christ within and beyond our faith community. At the close of the hour, there will be handouts with reflection questions and brief instructions for our personal/at home examination of consciousness. Newcomers are always welcome. Join us once, often or always for the Love of it! MinistRy contact: Donna Ennis 310-941-1349

"A New Way to Be Church: Parish Renewal a la Pope Francis"Jack Jezreel - March 15, 2018

7:00pm, St. Kateri RoomThe topic of the presentation has to do with Pope Francis, the "Pope for the Poor," inviting the Catholic communities to rethink the way that parishes understand their purpose, structure, and mission. The hope of Pope Francis, echoing the story of St. Francis, is to "rebuild" the church, not with bricks and mortar but with compassion and mercy.

Jack Jezreel will share Pope Francis' dream and offer some thoughts on how parishes might move forward with a very exciting future!Jack is the original author of JustFaith and founder of JustFaith Ministries. He is writer, speaker and teacher, focusing on the links between faith and compassion and a parish renewal strategy that draws from Pope Francis’ emphasis on “missionary disciples.” Over the last 15 years, he has given hundreds of presentations, including Keynote Addresses, continuing education for clergy and diocesan staff as well as parish, regional and national convenings. Jack was Keynote Speaker at the 2011 Religious Education Congress.

FAITH FORMATION

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDRENHelping children problem solve through communicationOften the easiest response to complicated conversations about sensitive issues is a generic one, but these moments can be opportunities to help children grow. For example, if a child comes to you and tells you that a friend is being left out of social activities, you might respond with a question: “Do you think there is anything you can do help him/her feel more included?” Or if your child comes to you for money for social activities, instead of just giving them the cash or suggesting how they might get the money, you might prompt them to consider ways that they could earn money or fundraise on their own. In this way, you are not only helping a child nd a solution to an immediate situation, but also helping them to grow in wisdom and prudence. For complete VIRTUS® article name and more communication tips, visit w w w. a r c h l a . o r g / p r o t e c t i n g .For particular help, call Assistance Ministry at 213-637-7650.

DIVE-IN SESSIONS AT AMERICAN MARTYRSMonday, March 5, 7:30-9:00pm, in St. Kateri dr. Christopher KaCzor: The Gospel of Happiness What is true happiness? How can you experience it? And can you live it wholeheartedly in your day-to-day life? Every thoughtful person asks such questions. Thoughtful Christians ask a few more questions. Can Christian practices enhance happiness? If so, how? And does Christianity provide happiness in a way that other paths, like psychology, cannot? Christopher Kaczor suggests answers to these and other questions about how to be happier. In The Gospel of Happiness, highlights seven ways in which positive psychology and Christian practice can lead to personal and spiritual transformation. Focusing on empirical findings in positive psychology that point to the wisdom of many Christian practices and teachings, he provides practical suggestions on how to become happier in everyday life and also insight on how to deepen Christian practice and increase love of God and neighbor in new and bold ways.

Monday, March 12, 7:30-9:00pm, in St. Katerirev. alexei smith: Commemorating the Reformation during this 500th Anniversary YearWe will examine the causes of the Reformation and where Catholics and Lutherans are today in the journey towards Christian unity.
