depicts black polka dots of old chewed gum and brightly colored spray painted symbols of city street departments, or the “dirty things” that make up a city landscape, together forming interesting stellar matrixes and sidewalk rock art. Meacham notes, “The gum spots and the Blue Stake marks are an anesthetization of all kinds of markings including graffiti, in our here and now existence, and which regardless of how they affect us one way or another, we can do little to escape them. So we might as well embrace them and be particularly mindful of them and then let our minds do with them as they may.”

Meacham was awarded “One of the Hundred Most Honored Artists of Utah” by the 2002 Olympic Curatorial Committee sponsored by the Springville Museum of Art. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Utah State Eccles Conservatory, Westminster College and at the Springville Museum of Art. Meacham says of his art, “I have never painted for the crowd. Art is something I have to do, not something I thought would be good for a hobby.”

Suzanne Storer exhibits a series of figurative ceramic sculptures in high relief for the wall, sculptures in-the-round for the pedestal and large wall platters. In de-scribing her exhibit Storer says, “People are the most compelling subjects I know of. These are real people coping, surviving and thriving in today’s world. My art stems from my desire to make connections with my fellow human beings.” Storer first draws the figure on paper in black and white with graphite or charcoal and then transfers the image onto a large clay slab. Working in clay she adds volume and seamlessly combines the 2D line with the emerging form. “By doing so I make what was once an illusion (a drawing) real because it now exists in 3 dimensions. Now line and shape combine with volume and all the other elements visual and tactile art can contain to make that connection as poignant as possible between artist and model and you, the viewer.”

Storer recently exhibited in the group show “Ecumene; Global Interface in American Ceram-ics” by the National Council in Education for the Ceramic Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received the Utah Juror’s Award from Adrian Van Sutchtelen at the 38th Annual Statewide Competition, Eccles Art Center, Odgen and re-ceived first in Ceramics in the 2010 Sandy, Utah Annual Arts Competition. The leading curator and author in ceramics, Mark Del Vecchio, says Storer’s work contains “strong drawing as well as sculpting skills,” and that it has “that clever mix of knowing a material and working it well.” More information about Storer and her work can be found online at www.suzannestorer.com.

World AIDS Day occurs on December 1 each year and is a day dedicated to raising awareness, commemorating those who have passed on, and celebrating victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services. The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988, the first ever global health day and the World AIDS Campaign is the leading international organization which plans and implements the observance. World AIDS Day highlights how our fundamental right to health is intrinsically and inextricably linked to other basic rights: the right to food, to shelter, to freedom, to clean water and safety.

Concurrent with World AIDS Day, Day Without Art is observed by numerous U.S. arts and AIDS groups by shutting down museums, sending staff to volunteer at AIDS services, or sponsoring special exhibitions of work about AIDS. Day Without Art has grown into a collaborative project in which thousands of museums, galleries, art centers, libraries, high schools, and colleges take part on both the national and local level. Locally, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts will cover up certain pieces of art in their galleries and the Salt Lake City Library will screen The Announcement, a documentary following the life of Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

Day Without Art and World AIDS Day will be observed this year in Salt Lake City through many local activities and free HIV testing. More information can be found at www.aiDSinfoutah.net or click here for a list of events. Locate HIV testing and other HIV services by visiting HiVtest.org or send a text message with your ZIP code to “KNOWIT” (566948).

Upcoming Exhibits in the SpringThe Artists of Utah 35 x 35 exhibit opens at the Finch Lane Gallery on Friday, March 8 and continues through April 26. The 35 x 35 exhibit is a showcase of art by Utah’s younger generation. From an open call to all Utah artists 35 or younger, the Artists of Utah Board of Directors selects 35 artists for the exhibition. In 2009, the exhibit opened to packed audiences at Finch Lane Gallery, and a number of the artists featured in that show have gone on to become major figures in the local art scene. Styles exhibited range from the traditional to the cutting edge, as Artists of Utah strives to present Utah with a snapshot of the best art being made by the state’s younger artists.Reception for the 2009 35 x 35 exhibit.

Salt Lake City’s arts community lost an ardent supporter and beloved friend, Kim Duffin, on November 4, 2012. Kim passed away in his sleep after a three month battle with PML (Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy).

Kim’s passion for nurturing artists and arts organizations was matched only by his kind, gentle demeanor and playful smile. He was deeply moved and inspired by artistic ventures of all kinds. In his youth, Kim performed with the Westminstrels, the Utah Opera, and the Salt Lake Vocal Ensemble. In his 25 years as the Assistant Director of the Salt Lake City Arts Council, he gave voice and form to the literary arts, visual arts, performing arts, media arts and public art. Artists and administrators from all

disciplines benefitted from Kim’s patient, thoughtful and tireless assistance. Kim was committed to causes that created better lives for people living with AIDS, serving on the Utah Aids Foundation board and the People with AIDS Coalition board; and his favorite southern Utah desert by serving on the Utah Wilderness Alliance board. In addition he was on the board of the LeftBank Gallery for Emerging Artists, the Salt Lake Gallery Association, the Utah Nonprofit Association and the Utah Museums Association and volunteered for numerous other nonprofit organizations.

Kim loved his friends and family, his cats, camping in the desert, his work, art, all things chocolate, and speaking carefully and deliberately. His dry wit, sarcasm and sometimes quirky antics created the character we adored and will miss for a very long time.

Farewell dear friend Kim.

Donations to support the commission of an artwork in Kim’s honor may be made and sent to the Salt Lake City Arts Council—Kim Duffin Fund.
