Birdie ’s Café Gallery announces an exhibit of the collages and mixed-media artwork of Kevin E. Dayhoff.

The 47 pieces of art on display are from the privatecollection of the artist and have rarely been exhibited in

public.

An opening reception will be held at the Birdie’s Café,

233 East Main Street, Westminster, MD Friday, May 10, 2013, from 6-9 p.m.

The art work will remain on display through

July and into August 2013.

Birdie 's café is the epicenter of cool in Westminster, MD. Birdie's café is owned by Westminster native Sherri Hosfeld Joseph, a local businesswoman and professionalphotographer.

Kevin Dayhoff is a life -long artist, designer, and writer. He has had a pervasive interest

in spatial re lationships, asymmetry and color-graphemic synesthesia, and the juxtapositioning of incongruent objects.

He explores colors and shapes and various social, political, and artistic themes

through collage , mixed media assemblage, drawings, and photography.

A Westminster and Carroll County MD native, he has been self-employed as a writer,designer, and artist since 1971.

Kevin has been a self-employed artist, writer, and businessman since 1974. He hasexhibiting art – landscape installations, drawings, collage, mixed media assemblage,sculpture, and photography since 1981. He is an artist, blogger, and writer. He served as a council member for the city of Westminster from 1999to 2001 and was the mayor of Westminster from 2001 to 2005.

Before holding elected office, he was a retired self-employed landscape designer, and contractor, nursery

stock farmer, and property management consultant from 1974 to 1999.

Since June 30, 2004, he has written columns and articles for various newspapers. He is currently a writerfor the Explore Carroll section of the Baltimore Sun, explorecarroll.com, a publication of PatuxentPublishing Co. He also writes for Westminster Patch, and an online columnists’ collective, “The Tentacle,”

www.thetentacle.com.

He is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, Maryland Pro Chapter and Capitolbeat, theAssociation of Capitol Reporters and Editors.

He writes about economic history, agriculture and the environment, art and culture, government, politics,urban planning and public infrastructure, for The Westminster Eagle, The Eldersburg Eagle, The CarrollEagle, and The Tentacle.

On April 24, 2009 he was awarded first place in the editorial “critical thinking” category for non-dailieswith over 20,000 in circulation, by the Maryland Delaware DC Press Association, for the April 2, 2008Westminster Eagle column, “Jeff Morse incident a lost opportunity.”

He has authored several blogs on art, history, politics, and community events since December 2005. In2006, his blog, “The Soundtrack Division of Old Silent Movies was recognized by George WashingtonUniversity’s “Institute for Politics, Democracy and the Internet” as one of the top 12 Maryland andVirginia political blogs: “Who's Blogging the 2006 Maryland And Virginia Elections?” In 2008, he wasawarded an honorable mention blog award from “SearchMaryland.”

He has been exhibiting art since 1981. Recently he has participated in a 20-artist cooperative, “Off TrackArt,” which formed in December 2008 and established a studio at 11 Liberty Street in Westminster.

Kevin served on the Maryland Municipal League’s Legislative Committee in 1999-2000 and 2001-2002;Secretary/Treasurer of the Carroll County Chapter of the Maryland Municipal League for five years from1999 to 2005); and served on the Maryland Municipal League Board of Directors annually for five

consecutive years, from June 2000 to May 2005. He graduated from the University of Maryland Academy for Excellence in Local Government in June 2001.

Since 1989 he has appeared on various radio programs, including WCBM and WBAL; which includes

recent appearances on the “Marc Steiner Show” on WYPR and later WEAA.

He has served as a Chaplain for the Westminster Fire Department and Maryland State Police Troopers’

Lodge #20 since January 2011.

He is a life member of the NAACP, and has served on various state and local government ag,environmental, and governance boards and commissions since 1980 and has taught classes for variousinstitutions since 1979. Westminster Cemetery Board (01/2000 – 05/16/2005) and was re-elected to theWestminster Cemetery Board of Mangers on September 29, 2011.

I’m honored to be a part of “Off Track Art.” It’s a great group of dedicated artists

who have come together to bring more art to Westminster and Carroll County.

With so many artists living in Carroll County, recent advances in technology, and Carroll’s highquality of life, our area is poised and ready to attract many more artists - and cultural and artistic

shops, studios and venues to the greater Westminster area.

Hopefully, “Off Track Art” will be the start of many more studios and shops coming to enjoy the

wonderful opportunities that are available here in Westminster and Carroll County.

In my March 6th, 2006 Westminster Eagle column I wrote that art “contributes to our community in

more ways than meets the eye.

“The arts build a sense of community identity and pride. Arts programs and cultural events add to

our sense of community and quality of life by bringing people together for a shared experience.

“Carroll County Arts Council board member JoAnn Hunter recently noted, "I enjoy getting together

with friends for dinner before an event at the Arts Center. I notice many other folks doing the same

thing.

“‘This is good business for the town and helps builds a sense of community,’ she said.

“Arts and cultural programming provide quality of life values to a family oriented community and

serves as an incubator and creative outlet for our children.

“(Art) also brings a substantial return on the investment to Carroll County in the form of tax dollars

and increased economic vibrancy.

“Not only does a strong and vibrant community arts and cultural presence strengthen spiritually and

philosophically - but it also strengthens a region economically.

“The artistic and cultural soul of a community makes our communities better places to live and

work.

“Arts and cultural centers are often an important factor used by businesses in their decision as to

whether to locate in an area such as Carroll County.

“A prospective business will often gauge the health of a community by investigating the vigor of the

non-profit community, the faith community, youth oriented programming, recreation opportunities

and the level of art and cultural opportunities available for the community - and its employees.

“Pam Zappardino, a leading arts and cultural advocate in the community says, ‘I think that the Arts

Center, together with the other venues in the community like the Carroll Community College,

McDaniel College and Common Ground on the Hill, are a critical part of a healthy community. They

bring people to (Westminster) and this is good for the economic health of the community.’”

A region is not necessarily transformed by the power, quality and value of art, but by the greatersense of vibrancy, optimism and sense of self worth it provides.
